Ripping multiple CD's from Sony multidisk units
« on: September 21, 2002, 10:21:27 am »

Nirvis (www.nirvis.com) has a device (slinke) that connects to a Sony A1 controlled multidisk changer and allows ripping and tagging of multiple CD's automatically.  They include free software (CDJ) to organize the information as well.

However, I am not crazy about the CDJ software and playlists are created in .pla format (not .m3u).  Is there anyway for Media Jukebox to control a multidisk changer and automatically process a bunch of disks overnight?

Alternatively, does anyone know of a way to convert .pla files to .m3u files?

Thank you.

Jim,

Thanks anyway.  Perhaps this could be a feature in a future version?

I think it would give MJ a big advantage to be able to load a bunch of mp3 files from albums via a multidisk changer without having to to sit at a PC disk drive and feed them one at a time.  You could put 10 albums in at night, go to sleep and wake up in the morning having everything loaded and named!

The RS232 protocol to control the Sony multidisk changers via the Nirvis Slink is readily available.   The neat thing about the Nirvis Slink unit is that if you connect it to something like a Moxa serial/ethernet server (www.moxa.com), you can control the Sony changer from any PC on your LAN, so the PC and changer don't need to be in the same room.

Am I the only one who thinks this would be worthwhile??  ::)

Surely the person that has bought the CD changer would not have such a need to be ripping... Possible tribe of one there  8) !!

How are you ripping from the CD changer ? Simply playing digital out into the digital in on the soundcard ??

As to why I would want to rip from a multidisk changer, I have a big collection of CDs I've collected over the years that I want to transfer to MP3s for use in a whole house multi-zone audio system (aka AudioRequest, Lansonic, Escient).

In addition to the usual advantages of mp3 over CDs, having the music in mp3 format on a hard drive would allow several selections to be playing at once in different rooms, as well as providing the ability to create  custom playlists for parties, etc.

As to how to get the music onto the hard drive, I would have the digital out of the Sony go into the digital in of the sound card, unless you have another idea.

well i have a 300+1 DVD\Audio CD Changer (retail $1300+ at the time) and you could put all 300 disks on for rip and come back next week and they would all be riped for you.

it would really be nice option, but how many people have 300 disck changers? so on a Bussness standpoint it would not make sence to develop for it unless it only took a few hours. and this is not likely.

In terms of cost, I just bought a Sony 400 disk changer  (CDP-CX455) for $215 new.  So, multi changers are not expensive relative to single changers - especially when you don't care about the quality of the d/a converter because you are ripping to MP3.

Even though you might rip a huge set like 300 only once, I usually buy (or borrow) CD's in sets of 5-10 rather than one at a time - and would plan to use the capability regularly fairly often to rip and categorize.

I think it would be very attractive business wise for MJ.  I would buy the product for this feature alone.

Randy,
We have our hands full just keeping up to date with new technology.  We aren't going to support CD changers in the forseeable future.

In terms of Jim's forehead, from the evolution of the picture I'd say "reseeding" might help correct the situation you are holding me responsible for!   :D
