Cleaning the search text - suggestion
« on: March 13, 2006, 03:55:28 am »

I have around 4000 songs in MC, and usually I have to use the search box. It works perfect for me, but if I want to show all the songs, I have to double-click in the text I´ve wrote and click "del" key. I think you can add a small button to clean the text, like I show in the next images:

It´s possible to do that?

Sorry for my bad english

Right-clicking on the search box opens a contextual menu, one of whose options is "Clear", which clears the previously entered text.

Hope it helps.

Allright, but I think my suggestion is faster and easier...
The way you propose require 3 steps:
1º right clic
2º find the option in the menu
3º click in that option

If you use the search box usually, it´s tedious...

I would love to see this feature added. While I agree that the current right-click behavior works, adding an X to clear the search text is much more intuitive.

Mozilla Thunderbird has basically identical behavior as that proposed in the original post. It only shows the X to clear the search box once something is typed into the box. That makes its behavior fairly explicit.

prior to typing in the search box:

after typing in the search box:

Clicking on the X will clear the search box and return the display below it to its normal state.

I will throw my vote in for this and also add that although the preset searches are nice, there should be a favorites (navigation style) option for editing and saving those searches that you use a lot or are tedious to re-build over and over.

Yes!  I usually highlight the search text and then hit the "Delete" key.  Every time I think "There has to be an easier way to do this."

X marks the spot!

Same here. X would be great...

There are too many right clicks for too many of the options. Something as often used as seach, would benefit from a visible button "x"

Well, they've said there will be no new features for 11.1, but I would love to see this and the search history built in to 12. That would rock.

There will be no new features for 11.1... Do you know when will the v12 be released?

I've been hoping for this exact feature as well.  It may seem like a small issue to people who don't use the search box very often, but if you DO use this box, it definitely feels "clumsy" to have to highlight and delete, or to select "clear" from the menu.  A little "X" would be totally self explanatory and make the process smoother and quicker.

Right-clicking on the search box opens a contextual menu, one of whose options is "Clear", which clears the previously entered text.

This actually doesn't work very well.  If the box has any rules in it, they completely fill the box.  Since you need to click in an empty part of the box to get the drop down with "clear" in it to come up, it becomes difficult to click on a spot that will do this.  Instead of getting the "right click" menu, you keep getting the "edit/remove" menu for one of the existing rules.  You have to be VERY careful to click in the TINY area surrounding the rules you've created.

A "clear" button (along with an easier way of seeing ALL the rules you've put in the search box) would be a VERY welcome addition.

surprised that so far, no-one's mentioned that, if the cursor is in the search box, pressing "Shift + Escape" clears the search box.

would also like to add my weight to one of the suggestions above; having made the same request in July last year:

talking of smartlists...

It would be neat if the search box could keep a shortlist, perhaps 10?, of the last typed searches, under a 'presets' sub-menu at the top of the wizard?
