MC11.1 - Return of the incomplete shutdown dialogue. :(
« on: September 28, 2005, 03:37:51 am »

While messing around with various full screen/windowed/standard views, it "encountered a problem" and needed to close!
On restarting, I was greeted by the "incomplete shutdown detected" dialogue. Please, please if this really has to be included, can there also be a "never ask this again" tickbox added?

I was so pleased this got dropped from v11. Is it really nesecary? (I can never remember how to spell nessecary??)

-marko.

It will be pulled out or tuned up in the next build or two.

I've got to agree. This message box is SOOOOOOO anoying!!!

Like it or not, MC can crash - sometimes thru no fault of it's own.  For example, every now and then I'll put in a dvd and due to a bad burn or whatever, MC will lock up and the only thing I can do is kill it. To then have it tell me the next time I startup that an incomplete shutdown was detected is simply useless - not to mention down-right ugly when in Theatre View.

If it must be there, I'd like to re-iterate marko's suggestion....

thanks for the input raym.

it makes me want to scream, those times you find that a file is crashing MC, but which one? doesn't have to be just that, anything that involves trouble-shooting an MC crash is made worse by the intervention of that dialogue on every restart, which in those situations, is to be honest, doing nothing more than "stating the bleeding obvious" and getting on yer nerves.

I can see its value to new users, which is why I'm asking for a switch for it. I don't mind how obscure it is, I'd gladly accept a registry hack, so long as I can turn it off.

Don't scream.  Hit escape or cancel.

Well, sure. The question I s'pose is why? What's the purpose of the dialog? Is the information contained within it not better suited to a trouble shooting page in the help file? Again, I agree with Marko. It seems like a fairly useful thing to tell a novice user once.

MC is a straight-up, no-BS piece of software. This is why stuff like this just doesn't make sense.

It should come up when MC runs into an error, the error could be cause by a 3rd party plug-in and this way you can at least boot up into MC without MC crashing.

this has happened before for some users, when if they just had a way of deactivating one or more parts of the initial boot-up mc would run fine.

It's never this for me as I don't run any 3rd party plugins.

If you're seeing crashes, please report details and a log -- we'd like to fix any of them we can.

**  bump ** - ditch the message.

Better choice allow for:

start MC in "safe mode"

as a short cut from the START menu

While I'm not certain, MC might be doing something at shutdown that activiates this message.  If it is, then whatever is going on is silent and "not a problem" until I fire up my HTPC and after a while wonder how come no music.....

I'd just be happy if the checkboxes didn't default to ON so that on the occasion when it does happen my wife doesn't just blindly click through and mess up my MC installation.  (FWIW, I would report problems but the only times MC 11.1 has crashed recently on me are probably due to this problem, and not due to any programming deficiency on JRiver's part.

Of course, I'd love it if you could clean up my hardware and patch a few holes in Windows XP, but I think that's probably asking a bit much.   ;)

Also, Marko, I can't spell necessary either (wow, I think I did that time).

Do you want the entire contents of the "previous" run posted here? I browsed through it but nothing stood out (don' t know what I'm looking for).

It will be pulled out or tuned up in the next build or two.
A better solution, but I'm still waiting for the build that fixes it. I'm running Mainlobby and it needs to have MC up and running before it starts otherwise it fails to connect and all hell breaks loose around the house (WAF).

wysocki, did you catch the following in the latest build?

11. Changed: The incomplete shutdown dialog is no longer shown when a debugger is bound to the Media Center process.
12. Chagned: Added a "Don't show again" checkbox to the incomplete shutdown dialog.

It was a long time coming. thank you very much.

that should take care of your problem with the dialogue itself.

If you're experiencing regular MC crashes, I suggest you start a new thread describing the nature of the crash, file types being played, tasks being performed, network setup (if any), 3rd party plugins being used (if any), your system info (help > system info)
If the team think the log file might be useful, they'll ask for it.

regards,
-marko.

I'll add a request for some sort of timer on dialog boxes in general.  If, for example, MC11 is configured to pull media from a network drive and that server goes offline.  MC11 throws up a dialog box complaining about the files being unplayable.  That's fine, but how about having a way for these to automagically dismiss themselves after some configurable period of time?  The delay interval could be registry driven if necessary.  But at least give a checkbox for dis/enabling this feature.
