Bugs in thumbnails for videos
« on: April 23, 2006, 01:48:14 pm »

but..... 2 points are annoying me slightly about thumbnails of videos

1) Not being able to set how far into the vid the thumbnail is made from.
Lots of black thumbnails, or a set all showing the same intro frame just looks iffy.

So, I found the 'Use screengrab for thumbnail' option

which leads to problem 2 and 3

2) I've got to do this for 50+ vids?

3) When you DO do it, and go back to the library, the update isn't displayed.
It's only displayed after closeing MC and restarting.
After a few beers it's really hard to remember which one's you have set the thumbnail for without restarting every 5 minutes

After looking through the amount of updates you guys make (almost daily!), the updating  of the thumbnail looks like the easiest, but I think adding a 'Video thumbnail position %' option would be really handy as well

ps
the black screen videos aren't from odd video specs, they're standard divx, but have a fairly longish black screen at the beginning for vid mixing into finaly products
eg intro/wedding/party/everyone falling over/outro

addendum

SOME thumbnail's are updating, but there doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason to it. They're are all in the same format, and if I remove them from the library, and re-import/set thumbnail then different ones will show the correct thumbnail  ?

--------------

scratch that - there's a 'saving tag changes (1 remaining stuck at the bottom status bar), after that, THEN I start getting the un-updated thumbnails

so... that must be because I have the save info in file options turned on
but, why is it even trying to save a thumbnail into an avi ?

if I wait long enough then it will finally show the correct thumbnail, and any other changed thumbnails
but the next change i make starts the 'saving tag changes' process again and no new thumbnails are updated until , what looks like a timeout happens.

at least i'm assuming it's stuck on a timeout, because it always shows '1 remaining' even if I change 5, and then after the message clears all 5 will update ok
(or rather, they will update as fast as I had made the changes)

-----------------------

further investigation shows...

an increase in the amount of threads running in your process - yup, 1 for each file
followed by a rapid decrease

yup, definately a thead problem, going to a folder i've never thumbailed show a rapid increase/decrase according to the amount of files there

i'm guessing here but it looks like
1) start a thread for each thumbnail you make (ooh lets say about 5 in rapid succession)
2) long waitfor with a timeout on each thread (long pause with no cpu usage)
3) gui doesn't get updated
4) each thread finished pretty much (one after the other + the delay between me making changes)
5) repeat ad nauseum when you make another change

hope this is usefull to you  :)

I don't even know where the 'Use screengrab for thumbnail' option is...

Sounds like it could be really handy, but where do you find it?

I think you have to pause video and right click on the screen.  Not all formats may work.

and if the thumbnails don't show correctly, they should do
(assuming it's a correct video format) after either

1)  a very long pause if you see the 'saving tag chages (1 remaining)'
in the bottom status bar

2) close MC/start MC, and the new thumbnails should show
