OmniFi DMS1 support
« on: September 16, 2005, 09:47:09 am »

Hi,
I just got my DMS1 a couple of weeks ago, and started fideling with it. It seems to use UPnP to play music as it has no hard disk.
It comes with a cd that installs simpleCenter to a pc, that pc servers the music via UPnP. it works fine with Twonkyvision UPnP musicserver. I own MC10 and I am testing MC11 with it now. It doesnt work right after installation.

Try setting "Replace Empty Genre" and "Use Flat URLs".

My notes show that this is not currently supported, but a lot has changed since then, so it may work. What's happening when you try? Is it recognizing the server at all?

I recently got an Omnifi DMS1 unit too.  The suggested changes above do not improve detection at all by the DMS1, although I can see its device inquiries every 5 minutes in the log.  Any additional ideas?  Thanks!

Go to www.ethereal.com, get the Ethereal packet sniffer, make a trace, and e-mail it to me (gateley @ jriver.com), I'll take a look to see if I can figure anything out...

Hi:
Any conclusion on this debugging?

I have a DMS1 too and would like to see it work with MC11. My trial period has expired, otherwise I could have sent you an ethereal trace myself for an additional data point.

If I can get the DMS1 to work with MC11, it will nail my 'upgrade to MC11' decision.

OmniFi DMS1 is supported in UPnP Server 1.0.37 or higher, or Media Center 11.1.173 or higher.

Thanks VERY MUCH to Scott W for helping with this.

Yes, I've gotten my Omnifi working with the latest public version MediaCenter 11 (posted around 4/19/2006) on my Omnifi with 2.0.313.

Get this -- even the PROGRESS BAR works!!!

Very nice.

Tw---y won't even try to get it to work -- say's it is too difficult (...I read the dev. reply as that they "don't want to put effort into that").

I have not tried the 2.1.012 firmware yet to see if it works.

I set the UPnP server to the Noxon server setting (not the automatically detect, so I don't know if "automatically detect" will work).

Omnifi Owners and MediaCenter 11.1.x

Like Tw---y's MediaServer, set the UPnP Server Options for "Receiver:" to "Terratec Noxon".

If you set it "Automatic Detection", then on the Omnifi DMS1, you'll get "Audio / Images / Video" which doesn't apply to this device.

It still works (even the progress bar with 2.0.313 firmware), but you get the additional, non-applicable Images and Video.

It server will kick out this error message:
04/19/06 22:44:25 - Cannot autodetect device, User-Agent: Linux/2.4.18-rmk7, UPnP/1.0, Intel SDK for UPnP devices /1.2

Additional findings about...

Omnifi DMS1 build with "newer" firmware 2.1.012 (aka 2.0.555)

MediaCenter 11.1.173

All songs play fine and jumping to next song is fine.
In all, playing MP3s seem okay (have not tried playing a FLAC file that would get transcoded to MP3, though).

Only problem is with the "Progress Bar".

When starting song, the Progress Bar progresses through the entire bar in 4 seconds (jumps through it in 4 segments) and then is at 100% for 5 seconds then repeats clearing the bar, jumping through it in 4 seconds and then at 100% for 5 seconds repeating.

SimpleCenter 2.0.3.0011 Update M2

Not surprising, the "Progress Bar" using the OEM UPnP software doesn't work properly either.

However, the progress bar does progress -- just VERY slowly.  That is, at 2:26 of my sample song, the bar seems to only be at 10% of the total progress.
At the end of the song at 3:41, the bar is at 15%

Other notable issues

The sample MP3 that I am using to debug with J River is VBR, 44KHz with embeded cover art and ID3v2 tags.

Music plays great with older 2.0.313 firmware.

However with 2.1.012 there are odd sonic audio glitches in the Omnifi DMS1 firware 2.1.012 that are not heard in DMS_Build_2-0-313.sfu (2.0.313). I can only figure that the artifacts are from the cover art and ID3v2 tags?  Because of the odd sonic artifacts, I'm switching back to 2.0.313.

Firmware changes notes for Omnifi owners...

By holding the Shift Key down in SimpleCenter and clicking and "Upgrade Device Software..." you can easily load different firmware from your hard drive onto the DMS1.

There is no problem in upgrading and downgrading firmware on this device.

Nice job to JRiver with the latest MediaCenter 11.1.x as Omnifi DMS1 now have a very nice MS-Windows based MediaStreamer.

Just got a DMS1. Apparently Omnifi is no longer manufacturing these devices. I can't register to get the updated firmware, which means I can't use the DLink DWL-120R because SimpleCenter doesn't recognize it. Any ideas?

Saxatac,

Here are some links for many locations for 'alternate' support for the Omnifi DMS1.

http://openfi.sourceforge.net/links.php

The above link is a great resource in learning about the Omnifi and helping you locate the firmware you're looking for the discontinued Omnifi DMS1.

See the above links to find this stuff -- specifically, join the Omnifi Yahoo Group, register, and view the files there.  There may be firmware files there.  The least you should do is get the SimpleCenter Community M2 update, install it, launch SimpleCenter M2, register, and download the firmware through SimpleCenter.

Since you're new to the discontinued Omnifi DMS1, you should checkout all of the links above and see what the community is doing with this device.  There's even information in the groups about how-to hack some of the features of the firmware (like turn on USB HD functionality).  I can't help with the wireless device as I only use the hard wired Ethernet -- especially since with wireless firmware/code cannot handle WPA, only WEP with 802.11b -- and there's quite a few posts about connections being lost using the wireless (so I don't even bother with poor encryption / poor reception / lost connections / dropped music / hung DMS1, etc).

However, you may want to discover those issues yourself, and the more power to you -- good luck!

Hope that helps, saxatac.

Thanks Omnifiuser1, I did find the firmware update. I got it hooked up this morning. I haven't tested it yet. As long as it works, I'm happy.

Here is another good source of information about the Omnifi:
