I always use Date(Year) for the year in which a song was a hit.

For the songs were I have the 'Album' tag filled I would like to register the Album Release Year.
This is not necessarily the same as (my) Date(Year).

Therefore I renamed the Custom1 field to Album Release Year via Tools/Option/Library.

1. Is there a better way of doing this?
2. More importantly: is the Custom 1 field part the the tags that are stored in an MP3 file?? (I only have mp3 files)

You'd be better off creating a new field.  You can name it whatever you like.

You can also pick whether you want it saved in the tag.

Look in Options > Library

OK. I will give that a try.

By-the-way:
I found out that renamed fields are available in Step 1 of the Edit/Create View Scheme (Create View Items).
In step 4 though, they are listed under the original names.
Also using 'More Fields' in the search box only gives original names.
