I have not been able to burn CD's - either WMA or MP3 - and I can't convert the format to MP3. I'm not technical enough to figure it out by using the Help menu in my Media Center 11. I'm sure there's something that I've missed, don't understand, or haven't downloaded - but what?

I'm using XP, HP Pavilion, and I am lost.

system info from Media Center could be useful. you get that by clicking on help in the top toolbar, then on system info.
the information is placed on your windows clipboard automatically, so, all you need to do then is come back here and paste the info into your next reply.

Are you receiving any error messages?
If yes, what are they?
If no, in what way are you not able to burn CD's? (What happens when you try?)

I'm assuming you're trying to burn audio cd's. Is that correct?
If yes, are you able to burn data cd's?

Do you have any other burning software installed?
If yes, what?

Have you disabled Windows XP's native burning?
If no (or "what on earth are you talking about") open "My Computer" and right-click on your burning drive. Click on 'properties'
Now click on the 'Recording' tab, and if "Enable cd recording on this drive" has a tick beside it, remove the tick (click on it) and then click on the OK button.
Can you burn cd's now?

In answer to the other questions - I get no error messages when trying to burn data CD'd - I haven't tried to burn audio CD's; When trying to burn it stalls and does nothing; There is no other burning software installed; There is no tick mark next to "Enable digital CD audio for this CD-ROM device and I still can't burn CD's

likely it is then. you can double check by going to the windows control panel and click on the 'user accounts' icon.

I'm running out of ideas. how about this...

Open Media Center.
click on 'help' in the top toolbar, then on 'configure debug logging'
place a tick against "output to a log file'
place a tick against 'general' and down the bottom of that list, you'll find 'cd', tick that too.
click the OK button.

Now try burning your cd again.
Once it's failed and you've got Media Center back to normal, go to 'help > configure debug logging' once more.
If you had to restart media center, click to view the previous log file, otherwise, view the current one.

If you post, say, the last 20 - 30 lines of the log file here, it may give the team enough clues to advise you further.

Start by clicking on the Burn CD option in the Action Window (lower left corner).

For Reply #6 - I go to "Burn CD", select the tracks I want to burn from "Audio" on the tree, move them to the spot for "Drop them here" and click on "Burn", it says that it's starting and is over very quickly. Checking the CD for the burn all it has is the playlist - no tracks

and are they on a network, or removable, drive?

Actually, as we're talking data cd's here, what they are should really be of little consequence, but from the original post, it would appear they are mp3's and wma's.

I wonder if the .wma's are DRM'd? MC would offer up an explanation dialogue if that was the case wouldn't it?

The other thing mentioned originally was conversion failure too, but no mention there of what the source files were. DRM'd .wma's again perhaps?

I don't know what DRM means. The originals were CD's that I ripped and they are WMA's - I have tried to convert to MP3 and am told that the "plug" isn't installed and do I want to download it. I have said yes to each time this message has been received and it, apparently, is still not installed. I hope to find an answer tomorrow when I compare this computer with another that has MC installed and has burned CD's before. I do know that I'm not having any fun right now.

What DRM means. And, more importantly...

Why it should matter to you (and here too).

I believe Windows Media Player encrypts the files it creates by default. Check under Tools --> Options --> Copy Music and look for an option called "Copy Protect Music" (it might be in a different place if you have version 10 installed, I don't).

I tried to find the Copy Music direction and can't find it. I did find a "Window's Media Encoder" with VBR Normal and an "Enable Personal Rights Management" that I checked. Still no joy. I tried again to burn a CD and got "Creating transcoded ISO image" followed by "Writing File Data" then ejection with no music on the disc. The computer has Windows Media Player 10.0.0.3646 installed 2/22/2006. The "Tenderfoot" appliation is appropriate.

"Personal Rights Management" should be disabled in WMP. Any files encoded with it on will not be playable on other devices, and MC won't convert them.

I have found that the files on the "Other" computer were all ripped as MP3, while those on this computer are all wma. There is still NO MP3 encoder on this computer - how do I get one installed? I was able to burn CD's on the "other" computer with no problem. This one will only do one file/album and then create a playlist entry that won't open. This computer is runnng MC 11.1.178 and the other is running MC 1.1.121. As there seems to be no way to convert the wma's to MP3's must I erase/clear all the already ripped music and start over?

Try ripping an audio CD and choose MP3 for the encoding. If the encoder plug-in isn't there, MC should download and install it.

I set the options for encoding - it starts with Windows Media - I change it to MP3 Encoder and click OK - the note comes up "MP3 Encoder not installed on system. Do you want to download and install" - I click Yes. IT NEVER HAPPENS!! Is there a place that had the MP3 Encoder I can go to and download? And the other unanswered question - will I have to re-rip that which has already been ripped? Thank you for your patience and tolerance.

In general, you are supposed to allow Media Center to download the needed files. It is quite difficult to say what prevents the download without knowing exactly how your system is configured.

However, here are instructions for installing the mp3 encoders manually (MC switches between two different encoders depending on the selected encoding settings):

Ok, it looks like part of the problem Salty Sailor is having with burning a transcoded CD is due to a bug in MC. Although I don't know what's causing the MP3 encoder not to download, MC should not have continued with the burn when the download failed. This bug has been fixed and there will probably be a new build later today - anything greater than 11.1.183.

The new build will not allow MP3 transcoded CD burning to proceed without a valid MP3 encoder installed.

Your WMA format ripped files are fine. You wouldn't be able to re-rip to MP3 anyway until the problem with downloading the mp3 encoder is straightened out. Once that's solved, you will be able to burn an mp3 CD using your current WMA files.

By the way, does the device with which you will be playing this CD accept WMA format? Many do, and if it does you can just select WMA format instead of MP3 when you start your burn. That method will be much faster since MC doesn't need to do a conversion.
