Please MC, speak with Wine...
« on: May 30, 2006, 02:13:32 pm »

Now Google has spoke with wine and between has optimized Picasa for Linux:

http://picasa.google.com/linux/

Maybe MC could make the same and release a version 100% compatible with Linux.

It's possible to do that? only speak with Wine, please...

I found a BLOG where the gentleman was using WINE with MC11.1 pretty successfully. It would be nice to have a LINUX based version though.

Will post the link later today.

You know...either they will have to hire more programmers or they are going to stop fixing/adding features like crazy--on a daily basis.  So how about we wait until they are finished with MC (completely) and then they can move on to the extras: porting to Linux and Mac (not that I care)??

So is OpenSuse the way to go for a 64bit system:

x86-64

This architecture supports the following processors:

    * AMD Opteron, Athlon 64, AMD Athlon 64 X2, Sempron 64, Turion 64
    * Intel Xeon, Xeon MP, Pentium 4 Extreme Edition, Pentium D
    * Processors based on AMD's AMD64 & Intel's EM64T (Intel's implementation of AMD64)

I may try installing and playing with WINE and MC12.

Hi

I have to say that each time i see the linux posts it fills me with hope  :). i have been a jriver MC center for 4 years now and its always been the BEST player out there by far every year. I have recently (last 6 months) switched to linux (kubutnu) and apart from not having MC it is so great. After being a windows user for all my life (from the good old vesion 3.11 days  ;)) i am loving every day of using linux but saddly i really really miss MC to the point i run it on VMWare!!!!. I used Amarok for a bit but it really saddly dosent come close to MC. I see there are quite a few Linux users in this forum and im sure that if ever MC is "ported" or re-written for linux alot of people around the world would become MC users and give MC another serious push to becoming the #1 cross platform media player out there!! All we can do is just keep on dreamin'

Time ago MC said they donīt rewrite the code because it will cost too much money, and I understand this. I want a solution for Linux (I use Kubuntu too) like Picassa, an instaler integrated with wine, easy and tested.

Zeltak, I never use VMware in linux because I think it will eat a lot of my Memory-CPU (two system running at the same time only for MC!). Is not true?

hi ferent!

Its good to see other kubuntu users here  ;D!  i run vmware with a p4 3.0 Ghz, 1.5 Giga Ram (ddr) computer. it dosent slow my computer at all! while its not ideal (you have to switch manually to Vmware every song/volume change you want to make) its the only way i can use MC in linux...(i had bad wine experience in the past with other software). You are right i guess that porting it through wine is the best solution. I hope it will happen in the near future :)

- 2 computers, one windows another with your favorite *nix distro.

- VNC on pc with MC, and access with any of the VNC clients from *nix.

This will be much quicker than waiting for a pure *nix version of MC ;)

hi

The Vnc version will work but if i understand you need another computer where you listen to music just for MC... what i meant ferent is that for every action you want to do (rewind, skip.volume change) you have to bring up Vmware and push some MC buttons since you cant access hotkeys through VMware which i find really annoyin. plus you do get the occasional stuttering...i dont find the Vnc option suited for me since i dont have another computer to spare (i already have 4 computers runing in my house...Kubuntu,HTPC,Wife and Server...)

Uauh!! 4 computers!!
I love MC, but I can live with Amarok. Yesterday I was happy because I could install Dreamweaver on my (k)Ubuntu and works great with wine, really fast.
Today I only miss to see TV on my (k)ubuntu and to have a clean MC instalation

hi again

if you want to view tv on kubuntu its easy: try either Xawtv, Mythtv (really great), Klear (http://klear.org/) or lots of other great tv progs for K(ubuntu)! ive used Tv on kubuntu for nearly a year now!

As for Amarok yeah i agree it dosent come close to MC...as i said before we can only hope and dream  ;D

This thread is a very nice example of why linux is an enthusiast OS.
Not much in the way of apps that folks want, tweak this, play with beta drivers (any easier now to install NVidia drivers BTW?).

I drop one or another flavor of linux on my machine from time to time. Luckily, 4 minutes with Acronis True Image and XP is back in harness.

I'm planning to see what CrossOver Office Pro v5.0.3 can do for me one day soon. Maybe tonight's project.

Hi

Try The New Crossoffice Beta 6, it works like a charm! im glad to see more and more linux users here :) maybe there is still hope for MC Linux.

BTW, ive tired the Wine solution for installing MC (http://www.wand.net.nz/~smr26/wordpress/?page_id=42)

and it did not work at all! if anyone has had any luck with it im sure we all would love to know how its done. im using as of yesterday Kubuntu Edgy and the latest Wine!

Somewhat OT, I was looking at solutions like Ghost and came across True Image. How do you like it? Did you compare it to similar products??

I have been using True Image for quite a while now and I am very happy with it. It 's a real life saver when your system runs amok. Just never forget to backup up regularly. A 2 months old image is useless as it takes time to get up-to-date with all the system, office, MC12, antivirus, spyware and all other application updates coming along almost every day! I only use it for the C drive with windows+programs. All my data and media is on other drives and I pay a lot of attention to keep any user data away from C! I even relocated most of Documents and Settings to another drive.

I used Drive Image in the past which was very good, but then it was bought by Symantec and found True Image. I avoid all Symantec products as they caused me a lot of headaches in the past! They are just too intrusive on your system!

I can see more than a few problems with trying to port MC to Linux or OS-X.  Don't get me wrong -- I would love it, but things like the codecs would prove interesting....

Rather, how about a small step to start things off.

1. MC already has the library server.
2. The library server can already transcode to common formats.

Build a client version of MC for other OS's.  It would use the library server, which would have transcoded as needed, avoided the codec issues, drivers etc.  Plus, it allows JRiver to make a series of companion products, which I'd at least buy:

1. UPnP client
Nero claims to have one, but I have it, and JRiver could easily do better.  The client would be very lightweight as it doesn't need to carry most of MC.  It would require MC11 on the backend.

2. Web-based MC player
For cases where MC11 can't be installed, this is stripped version of MC in library client mode.  Basically, it's a player only.  TwonkyVision is trying to do this right now.

mmm a web based player or a client would actually be awesome for starters! i mean i would of course preffer the full MC in Linux but would LOVE  ;D ;D ;D ;D if anyone with prog knowledge (i have Zero) or someone form JRiver would put out a client!! great idea!

I've tried many and True Image beats all I have tried. The Corporate version can restore to dissimilar hardware too. Don't think the 'Home' version does.

Fast, easy to use, reliable. Good combo for any software, but especially for this task.

This happened to me too -- in 1999. Perhaps's I'll try it again some day. If I just could find the missing pieces and that Red Hat CD...  ;D

Seriously, what distro I should try for "media center" type use? Would that "Kubuntu Edgy" be good or is it too edgy?

Ubuntu 6.10 (Edgy Eft) has been fine here for someone who doesn't want to spend days twaeking and finding drivers.
A simple edit or two to get my NTFS drives mounted, add support for APE and Wavpack, I'm ready to play around a bit.

A good place to D/L (for my location anyway) is Ubuntu Releases
