I went ahead and got a new IPod this weekend and decided to use MC11 to sync my files on it.  I encountered some odd problems.

First, the syncing takes forever (I have a large library and I'm stuck for now with USB1). and on two occasions the computer appears to have turned itself off or reset itself in the middle of the night, and when I check to see what happened, I see (using Windows Explorer) that there are indeed music files on the IPod, but the IPod itself isn't able to see them using the menu and wheel.  It's as if the files aren't there, as far as the IPod is concerned. 

I can't check to see which files made it to the IPod, because (using Windows Explorer) the files are stored in various randomly assigned folders (F1-50), and the file names are truncated. 

In addition, I have noticed that, when trying to sync again, MC11 is sending over duplicates of selected songs--again, as if the songs aren't there on the IPod.  Indeed, when I try to review what is on the IPod using MC11's menu, MC11 doesn't list the songs that Windows Explorer says are on the Ipod hard drive.

Anyone encounter anything like this?  I have Itunes on my computer, but it is turned off all the time and I de-selected the "start up Itunes when Ipod is connected" option.

What format are the source files?  MP3?  There may be a conversion involved, which can take time.

If the transfer didn't finish, the iPod wouldn't see the files correctly.  That's normal.

Try smaller syncs (to test).

Hey, Jim.  There were conversions to MP3 required, and it was taking a long time.  Maybe I need to buy a new computer for my new Ipod.  and so on.  and so on. 

I will try a shorter sync.  But, if all the files eventually are loaded, to the point where the bigger playlists are complete, will the IPod see the files that were loaded earlier and not presently visible?  In other words, do I need to delete the files that already are on the IPod but not "seen" yet, or will the Ipod see the files later when the playlists are completely synced?  I'm worried that MC11 is loading multiple copies of these files, which will eat up space on the hard drive.

Try changing the option for the MP3 encoder to use the gogo encoder for conversions instead of Lame.  It's faster.  The quality is a little lower, but you probably couldn't hear the difference on an iPod.

I have this same problem with my iPod since I upgraded to MC 11.  It does not happen when I upload playlists only, so I have gotten around it by making one playlist called "All Songs" which contains all of my music files.

Make sure you have the most recent MC 11.1 installed.

Then, as Jim suggested, upload in small batches if necessary.  Playlists will still work fine this way.

Also, a computer reboot is a hardware problem (JRiver couldn't cause this if it wanted) so you may have a heat or memory problem.  Running system stress tests might tell you something.
