.190 - Can't get plug-ins to install properly.
« on: July 28, 2006, 10:24:32 pm »

Having problems with .190 getting external plug-ins to install properly.  Tried both the KingSparta Lyric Finder and the Evil Lyrics plug-ins and am having similar issues.

Log in as Admin, and install the plug in via it's set up program.  That runs with no errors, but when I open MC as Admin I get this error:

Link to error message since it seems it is too big to post here:  http://pfeffernet.com/temp/Error1.JPG

As Admin the plug-in appears to work, but I don't have a library for that user to test it.

Log in as my normal user account, and get no errors starting MC.  However, the plug in does not appear in the list.  It shows up in Plug-in Manager as 'hidden', and when I click 'Show' I get the following:

Is this on issue on my end or is something broken in .190?

Uninstalled MC and deleted the JRiver program files folder and all 'JRiver' entries in the registry.  Reinstalled .190 and still get same issue.  Also can no longer install skins (Windows doesn't know what to do with .mjr files, and choosing Media Center to open them with seems to do nothing either).

Installed .190 on my laptop, and all is well with the skins but I get the same errors on plug-ins.

Uninstalled .190 on my desktop and installed .188 (latest on main download page).  Could not get skins to load at all, it wanted to use "MediaCenter.11.Pack" to install them but it would give a 'failure' error.  Installed .190 again on the desktop and now I have no problems installing skins under the installation Admin account (it is using "PackageInstaller"), but logged in under the normal user account it is trying to use "MediaCenter.11.Pack" and it says "windows can't open this file".  Tried to manually link it to 'PackageInstaller.exe", and the file processes but never shows up in the list of skins.

Current status:
Can't get plug-ins to work at all (two different installations).
Can't get skins to work under my normal user account (non-administrator).

No.  Running Firefox as my primary browser and IE6.

Is there a registry clean tool for MC?  I've deleted the 'j. river' entries but there are obviously others that are also not being removed by un-install.  Barring the tool, is there a comprehensive list of all entries that MC writes to the registry so I can manually remove them?

It appears that uninstalling the app is not cleaning out the registry entries and that something has changed with .190 and packages.  For example, if I uninstall .190 and install .188, the .188 install shows nothing in the the skins list during install.  Then it is unable to download additional skins properly.

After re-installing .190, the admin account that installed the app seems to get the new registry entries but the other accounts sill have the old ones and they are not getting updated.  Specifically I am seeing differences in the .mjp registry entries between the admin account and the user account.

More info:

Uninstalled .190 again.
Rebooted.
Did some comprehensive registry cleaning (searched for and cleared out obvious MC keys searching for 'j. river', 'media center', 'packageinstaller', '.mjp', and '.mjr').
Rebooted.
Re-installed .190 as admin.
Downloaded a skin as admin - worked fine.
Downloaded a skin as the normal user account - file types not registered and windows didn't know what to do with it.

Looks like .190 is not playing nice with multiple user accounts.  It is updating the user account used to install it, but none of the others.  Have not had this problem with prior versions.  As of now, I have to run as admin to even add a new skin.

My guess is that some virus checker or similar is causing problems.

Hi I'm the author of the EvilLyrics Plugin.
I can confirm the plugin works fine with .190 in adminstrator user.

It seems like the plugin may be having a problem connecting to EvilLyrics.
Have you tried
x Reinstalling EvilLyrics itself under the normal user?
x Reinstalling the plugin under the normal user?

If so, does EvilLyrics run fine on it's own?
Are you running XP?  Older operating systems did
not come with the VB Runtime files as standard,
possibly these may need reinstalling.

x Try reinstalling the .NET Framework 2.0 from here

If none of those work, then something is stopping either EvilLyrics from
registering/starting, or the plugin from starting EvilLyrics.
As Jim suggested this could be Virus Checker/SpyWare Protection etc.

Deleted everything again
Manually cleaned out the registry for both user accounts of all Media Center and King Sparta's Lyrics finder entries (they both left garbage behind on un-install).
Made my normal user account an administrator and re-installed both MC .190 and KS Lyrics finder.
Removed my normal user account fromt the admin group.

Everything seems to be working now.

Two issues I see from this
1)  MC is not non-admin user friendly.
2)  MC needs a registry clean tool.

Thanks.  Got KingSparta's version working at the moment (I need batch processing right now anyway).  I could not get the EvilLyrics to work on any machine I tried it on (different AV software on each).  Also got the same error installing it on a VMWare machine with no virus scanning.  Are there specific ports that need to be open for this plug-in to work?  Anything I can look for in the registry to clean it out fully?  I never would have found the issue with the KS plug-in if it were not for the regsvr32 errors I was getting during install.  Apparently the EZFTP.ocx control that it uses embedded itself to the installing user and would not run for anyone else.  Anything similar with yours?

Are you saying EvilLyrics Standalone
As in the application from
http://www.evillabs.sk/evillyrics/

Will not start on it's own?

Detailed instructions for the EvilLyrics Plugin are here

I was installing the version from the 'Skins and Plugins' section of the MC website and didn't realize it had dependencies.  I will pull the version from your website once my batch-adding is done.  If I have problems I will post them in the plug-in section of the forum.  Thanks for your help.
