I started writing a post about how MC12 was slow for me, but then I went to check for a pattern and things were fast.

Sometimes I have a long startup, but most times fast.

Sometimes changing views (Audio --> IMage) I have a 10 second wait, but other times under 1 second for same transition.

I thought it was thumbnails, so I rebuilt all.

It still happens sometimes, but hard to see pattern.  Does MC12 do some caching so that the first time I might do something it is loading a cache into memory and then if I repeat it works with the cache?  I am just guessing here but I definitely have some slow spots.

I have had similar issues:
--> Can confirm that startup time is erratic (quick sometimes, up to 30s others)
--> Changing views always lags a bit for me, but the extent to which slowdown occurs seems to fluctuate (and does not seem to be related to complexity of the view schemes or anything)

I do have a rather slow machine, but some things seem to take ages and at other times, the same tasks are done rather quickly... Have tried disabling antivirus (as some threads suggest) but no effect.

Could this be related to the folder watch or something?

Disabling may not be enough.  Uninstalling may be worth trying.

Are there any network or USB drives that are slow to respond?

For me:


no watched folders

No anti-virus issues that I am aware of (but will look at other threads)

USB drives -- yes, but not sure how I can pinpoint this.  I have one drive that is sometimes flakey, have been slowly migrating off of it, I will see how much is left on it and if that might be the problem, although MC 11.1 has no slowdowns related to that.

No network to speak of...
And no USB drives.

Might consider uninstalling antivirus if this becomes too much of an issue, but reinstalling all updates/virus definitions etc takes a fair bit of time for me (slow connection)... Will probably wait til my next reformat

I have continued to see some delays.  I do have some USB drives, but it works fine in 11, have never had slow downs.  Same machine, same conditions.

Is there any logging I should turn on to look for symptoms?

Just to update here --  I must be the only one who is seeing MC12 as much slower than MC11.

I can change from Image to Audio and count to 10 or 15 seconds.  Pretty much every time.  Close Mc12, run mc 11.1 (ie. same machine, same files, same library) and its zippy.

Something MC12 is doing is slowing me down.  I have Auto Watch turned off.

Sometimes I run MC12 and it seems okay, then I get these slow downs.  I removed all RAW images from the library, that wasn't it.

When I look at CPU and Memory used, they are not out of line.  I will keep looking for a pattern.

Is it a really large or complex view with many panes?  If you leave and come back, does it take 10 seconds again?

No, at this point, I am just hitting the Roots and they are either Default or pretty close to it. 

The pattern is more like MC starts fast, do a bunch of stuff at good speed, then all of a sudden the views get slow.  No impact to play back.

Question -- I imported my Library from MC 11, rather than New Library starting from scratch, I assume that is okay?

~10K images, 
~10k audio, almost all VBR MP3
<50 video files


OKAY, I think I found something....  VIDEO files....  I importated a bunch of videos of various sources and formats.  I thnk the slow downs has to do with that.

I deleted them out of my MC12 library and it seems better now. 


Anything I should look for as a culprit?

Is it only slow when entering or leaving a video view?  It's possible thumbnailing (which happens at a video view) isn't behaving.

No, in fact most of the slow downs were Audio and Images root view.  But perhaps something in an earlier visit to the video view.  And I did have an out right crash in Video view scheme.

I will try and selectively import some videos and see what is what.

I am having so many crashes I've lost count. It's definitely to do with the thumbnailing of videos I think.

It seems to lock MC up.
