CD insertion strange behavior
« on: September 20, 2006, 12:34:19 am »

I am running MC 10.0.173
A couple of months ago, my system began behaving strangely when I insert a new CD - only when running MC.
The CD will spin up to high speed, then stop, then repeat.  MC is unresponsive and displaying either "working" or "examining media" during this behavior, which might last ten minutes.
Suddenly, it will synch up, check YADB, and everything is normal - until I insert a new CD, when the whole rigamarole repeats.
NOT ALL CDs generate this behavior, but it seems that the vast majority do.
At first I thought maybe it was a drive problem, but I changed out the drive, and the behavior hasn't changed.
Any ideas?  This is driving me nuts.

Maybe try another drive.  CD drives are pretty cheap.

Virus software?

Firewall?

OS changes?

Other software grabbing the drive?

etc.

If it worked for a while, then stopped, it isn't MC.

None of those have changed - except for periodic updates.
It is like MC cannot recognize that it is an audio CD for some time.
I was wondering if perhaps these might be discs with some sort of stealth copy-protection scheme, like the one with a bogus CD-rom track before the audio tracks, but I don't have the specific technical knowledge to see that.

I was interested in seeing if anyone else had experienced this same problem and knew what it was.

Again, I don't think it is interference from another program, because once it recognizes the disk and an audio CD, everything works fine, until I insert another disk.

Thanks,
Mike

I might try re-installing MC.

Virus software?

I would guess this is the culprit...  I'd try disabling it and see if it cures what ails you.

There's at least one in the hall of fame here:

You mean the article about Kapersky anti-virus, right?
I've always used Norton, but I'll try turning it off tonight and see what happens.

Assuming that doesn't fix things, would it be worth the effort of re-installing MC?

Thanks,
Mike

No.

Skipping playback
Solved by turning off Norton Anti-Virus:

OK, thanks!  I hadn't read that thread because I've never, ever had a playback problem.
I'll see what happens this evening and report back tomorrow.
