Lossless settings
« on: October 08, 2006, 09:43:03 am »

Hiya,
I'm about to encode 100 or so CD's I've just ripped to lossless.
I'm not that fussed about whether I do it to Monkeys or APE as I dont really know what the huge diff is between the two.

Anyway, just want to confirm what the correct settings are to use for either of these formats to specify lossless encoding.

Thanks

If you don't care, just use APE/Normal.  APE is natively supported by MC, so you will have fewer issues using the files in MC.  APE with higher than normal gives slightly smaller files but takes more processing power to play.

I have my library stored as APE currently, but FLAC is more universally supported by 3rd party devices.  If you plan on using your library with handhelds (keeping the files lossless) or media extenders, then check what formats they support before making you decision.  While you can always move from one lossless format to another, it does take time to do.

If you do decide to use APE, consider getting the stand alone software too:

Monkeys audio and .ape are the same thing. Matt one of the developers at JRiver invented/developted it.

What format did you already rip to? If it's anything other than wav, then don't convert; re-rip using a lossless format.

Sorry I meant APE or FLAC.

It's all .wav's currently.

So whats the diff then between APE normal and APE extreme?

Is APE pure lossless regardless of which settings are used for it then?

Yes.  It's misleading.  It has only to do with the degree of compression.  Use normal.  Anything more will save only a few percent.
