Mixed filetypes crashing MC
« on: October 17, 2006, 10:57:41 pm »

Hi all--

I've been fighting a terrible problem over the past couple of weeks. While playing back music files, the sound goes all 'digital static-y' and a dialog box pops up telling me that Media Center.exe has crashed and an error log is being written. It feels like something related to filters, but I can't figure it out. I first noticed the behavior while using 11.1.196.

I have tried:

1) Upgrading to 11.1.200 - same problem
2) Playing all APE/APL/MP3 files (ie all internally decoded) - no problems
3) Playing all m4a files (ie all DirectShow decoded) - no problems
4) Playing all m4p file (ie all QuickTime decoded) - no problems
5) Uninstalling all filters/codecs I could find (see this thread for more information)
6) Reinstalled everything per the CCCP directions found in the above thread.
7) Similar tests to above yielded the same results

However, a mixed playlist of m4a, mp3, m4p, ac3, apl gives me the same crashing behavior as before.

Does anyone have ideas on how to troubleshoot this? I can provide crashlogs, system details, etc. etc. I'm also willing to send the debug info from MC itself if someone can tell me which options to turn on to be useful...

Thanks,
Brad

This could be a Directshow filter problem.  I don't think it's an MC problem, but I could be wrong.

Maybe you could try something between the tests you have done.  A works.  B works.  How about A, B?

There are a lot of posts about Directshow filters on the MC12 board now.

We're still learning.

Well...just to close this thread out, I gave up.

The problems were getting so bad, and so intermittent that I just wiped my hands of the whole thing--wiped my 2nd hard drive, reinstalled win2k and rebuilt my whole system this weekend.

Thankfully that seems to have fixed things--including a nice upgrade to MC12.

See you over there!
