TiVo server not working
« on: November 05, 2006, 02:56:52 pm »

I am running MC 12.0.106 and the TiVo server does not seem to be working properly. I still have MC 11 installed, and when I run the TiVo server through MC 11 everything works as it should. Here's what's happening in MC 12:

1. If the TiVo Beacon Windows service is running, I see the following when I open the plugin and start the server:

11/05/06 15:43:12 - Starting...
11/05/06 15:43:12 - Trying Port 8070
11/05/06 15:43:12 - Checking TiVo Beacon installation
11/05/06 15:43:12 - Connecting to Beacon.
11/05/06 15:43:12 - Running on Port 8070

11/05/06 15:51:57 - Unknown Request:
11/05/06 15:51:57 - Unknown Request:

When I go to my TiVo, I do not see my music or photos as I do with MC 11.

2. If I turn off the TiVo Beacon service or uninstall TiVo Desktop, I do not see the "Unknown Request:" entries as shown above, but I still do not see my music/photos on my TiVo.

What's strange is that the TiVo plugin was working fine for me when I first started using MC 12 (0.95, I believe) - this issue has appeared in the last few releases.

One of my main reasons for using MC is the TiVo functionality, so I'd love to see this fixed! It would be hard to go back to MC 11 at this point because I've made many edits to my library and I understand that the libraries are not backwards compatible.

I'm also running 12.106 and i get a C++ runtime error when I try to select anything on the Tivo and  MC12 exits.

John -

Does this fix also address the connectivity problem that I noted in my message? I have also experienced the crash that others have discussed, but for the last few releases, I haven't been able to connect at all (when I go back to MC 11, I connect without any problem).

John,

The crash is fixed. I can browse the music and photos as before.

Actually, that's not the issue that I am still experiencing, even after updating to 12.0.107. Horse, I believe that the messages you're seeing are actually normal and don't indicate any problem - I know that I've seen them regularly in the past.

Basically, what I'm seeing is this:

1. If TiVo desktop is installed, then I see the following and cannot connect from my TiVo:

11/05/06 15:43:12 - Starting...
11/05/06 15:43:12 - Trying Port 8070
11/05/06 15:43:12 - Checking TiVo Beacon installation
11/05/06 15:43:12 - Connecting to Beacon.
11/05/06 15:43:12 - Running on Port 8070

11/05/06 15:51:57 - Unknown Request:
11/05/06 15:51:57 - Unknown Request:

It continues to fire off the "Unknown Request:" message about every second or two.

2. If I uninstall TiVo Desktop, I no longer see the "Unknown Request:" message, but I still am unable to connect.

3. If I start the TiVo server in MC 11.1.200, I am able to connect with no problems (whether or not TiVo Desktop is installed)

John -

Is there any possibility that having MC 11 installed alongside MC 12 could be causing this problem? I wouldn't think so, since they're in separate directories, but I'm willing to entertain anything.

Are you running MC11 and MC12 at the same time? And the TiVo Server in both at the same time? That may cause a problem (let me know if that's the case).

If MC11 is not running and the Desktop is not running, does MC12 TiVo server work?

No - I'm not running MC 11 and MC 12 at the same time (either the desktop or the TiVo server). Even if MC 11 is closed and the MC 11 server is not running, the MC 12 TiVo server does not work. But if MC 12 is closed and the MC 12 server is not running, I can connect to the MC 11 server without any problems.

Try choosing a different port for MC12, actually, try 3 or 4 different ports.

I have tried other ports and have tried resetting the Beacon, but didn't see any change before. But I will try again when I get home this evening.

Thanks!

Okay, if that doesn't help, do a sniff with Ethereal (www.ethereal.com) and e-mail it to me (gateley @ jriver.com) I'll take a look to see if I see anything.

John -

I tried every port number between 8070 and 8079, but no luck. It's definitely not a firewall or router issue, because the TiVo is able to communicate with my computer via the standard TiVo software and via the TiVo server in MC 11.

I downloaded Ethereal (actually, I downloaded Wireshark - that's where the Sourceforge download link on the ethereal site takes you to - which I understand is the latest and greatest version of Ethereal with a different name) last night and played around with it a bit. Just wanted to ask you a few questions before I send you the results of my sniff:

1. How long of a period of time should I capture - would 1 minute be sufficient?

2. Should I filter the results or just send you the entire output file?

3. Should I also turn on TiVo Server debugging and send the results of that as well?

4. Should I start the sniff with the TiVo server in MC 12 off and then turn it on while the sniff is running?

5. Do you want only the file with the sniff results of the TiVo server running without the TiVo Desktop installed, or would it be useful for comparison purposes to capture traffic for each of the following:

  • TiVo Desktop only
  • MC 11 TiVo server only
  • MC 11 TiVo server and TiVo desktop
  • MC 12 TiVo server only
  • MC 12 TiVo server and TiVo desktop

Sorry for all the questions - I've never used packet sniffing software before and I just want to make sure that I send you as much (but not too much!) information as you will need to try to diagnose the problem.

Thanks!

Send me at least a minute, enough for the "unknown"  packets to come through.

Don't filter the results, unless it's really necessary.

Sure, turn on the Debugging, the more info the better.

Yes, start the sniff with the TiVo server off.

For now, just MC12 and nothing else running.

Thanks,

Sounds good. I'll run it and send it to you after I get home tonight.

You said I should just send you the results with only the MC 12 TiVo server running (not the TiVo desktop software). As I indicated in my earlier messages, the "Unknown Request" message only appears if the TiVo desktop software is running - but even after removing the TiVo desktop software and restarting the computer and then running the MC 12 TiVo server by itself, I am still unable to connect. Again, with MC 11 I can connect regardless of whether the TiVo Desktop software is installed. Given this, should I send you the results of MC 12 TiVo server running (starting it during the sniff) both with and without the TiVo Desktop software installed?

No luck on trying to powercycle the computer and TiVo - still no connectivity in MC 12, whereas I can connect without a problem in MC 11, Galleon, and TiVo Desktop.

Is there any way to revert back to an earlier version of the TiVo server?

Jeff, turn on tivo debugging and try again. Post the status page here. Something very strange is happening with your case - it's breaking somewhere it shouldn't.

(From an older post:)

Add a DWORD registry key named:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\JRiver\Media Center 12\Plugins\Interface\TiVo Server\TiVo Debug
and set it's value to 1.

Well, I think we fixed part of the problem. My TiVo can now see my MC folders using the MC 12 server. But when I try to access any of the files through the TiVo, I get the following error message:

"An unexpected error occurred while accessing the server.

(Error#3-0-65535)"

I will email you with the output that I get in MC with TiVo Server debugging turned on (it caused my post to exceed the max length).

I was just now getting around to doing that sniff thing… been a busy week. Thought I would check for a new version first, and low and behold, there is a fix. Seems to be working here, although I didn't play anything through TiVo for more than a few seconds.

Well, I seem to have fixed the problem with the 3-0-65535 error, but I still don't understand why it was happening. I found this post on the MC TiVo forum that referenced this error number - http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=28711.0 - and it seemed that the issue had to do with incompatible file formats.

All of my files are in mp3 format, so I knew that it wasn't an issue with TiVo not being able to play the file. But then I looked at the MC TiVo settings and saw that it was set to "Don't convert audio". When I changed this to "Convert Audio if necessary" the problem went away. However, as I said, there shouldn't have to be any audio conversion taking place since all my files are already encoded as mp3s.

Still - I'm very happy to have my MC 12 TiVo server working properly again :) Thanks for your work on this, John!

Thanks John, Seems to be working a lot better. I now have a little bit of a different problem.
The server does not work when I have multiple interfaces configured on my PC. With the TiVo server
I can select which interfaces to use, it seems that MC12 only used my primary interface, but the
TiVo is commected to one of the others. I have to disable all the other interfaces on my PC to
make the connection to the TiVo. Any chance you can add a network interface selection to MC12,
like the one the tivo server has?
Thanks again for getting this fixed!

Hi Y'all,

I'm not sure. It happened to me once, but since then I've played 15 songs continuously without problem.

If you can detect any pattern to this problem, let me know the details here please...

If you're talking about the error 1-5-6, it's happened several times now for me, but I can just back out to the main Tivo menu, go back into MC Music and start playing again. No pattern that I can detect yet.

Things are really not reliable yet. In particular it does not work at all to play songs from smartlists for me. I try to use the default pick 100 songs smartlist and the songs will not play. Also picking music directly is hit or miss. All my music is WM lossless format and so is getting converted on the fly. Here is some of the debug log. If you need more of it let me know and I will email it...

Well, my latest issue with the TiVo server (running MC 12.0.119) is that I can see and play songs, but when I fast forward or reverse through a song and then press play, the song starts again from the beginning (even though it looks on the screen that it should be playing from some other point in the song). I tried playing the same songs using the TiVo desktop software and did not have this problem.

I can confirm jeffh's issue with trying to play the 100 random song smartlist. I am able to play songs from other smartlists (with the fast forward and reverse problem as noted above), but when I choose any of the songs in the 100 songs list, the screen just flashes quickly and nothing plays.

I'm still having the problems noted in the last two messages - fast forward or reverse restarts the song and trying to play the 100 random song smartlist doesn't work.

Any word on a fix for this?

I've fixed the smartlist problem (next build, 126 or higher), still working on the seeking problem.

Seek should be fixed in the next build (128 or higher)

John -

The seek problem is definitely fixed, but I'm still seeing the problem with the 100 random song smartlist not playing (using 12.0.129).

Thanks,
Chris

I've seen a big increase in server errors where Tivo loses connection to MC. Is anyone else seeing this?

Could be new Tivo software release?

Very frustrating.

I have actually been using the Tivo server pretty heavily over the past weekend with very few issues.  Thanks for all your work on this.

This is the one big one I noticed:

I have a set of Mp3s of Elvis Presley's "Christmas Peace" 2 CD set..... I have a playlist containing these songs....When I select the playlist, it plays all songs correctly, But each one starts about 5 seconds into the song.

If I listen to the same songs on the PC, they play correctly.

If I go to one of my other playlists of Christmas albums, they work as expected.

Any ideas?

Maybe its in my network than.  I get a lot of [going from memory] 3-5-6 or 1-5-6 errors on TIvo.  Will look for a pattern, but it seems my Tivo is losing its connection to MC.

I'm getting the same server disconnect and error messages as the others but with one exception.....only when trying to view photos (jpegs). Music works fine. Version 12.0.120.

I am mostly getting it when skipping songs.

Does anyone know what 1-5-6 means?  Is there a Tivo error message look up some where?

Running 12.0.130 now and still cannot view photos via Tivo server. Music works OK. When I try opening a photo I get a tivo error on tv screen and this on the MC tivo log:

Warning: Bad URL argument(container) Details=Basic
Bad Request: Unknown Command /TivoConnect??Command=FlushServer

Everything is unchanged from MC10 and photos worked well over Tivo then, so I am assuming this is a bug.
