Major problems after installing ATI TV tuner
« on: September 05, 2002, 06:26:11 pm »

Everything was working fine, and I installed the ATI TV Wonder VE.  The TV tuner worked fine in MJ, but when I then decided to play music, I ran into the problems.  Now, whenever I try to play a song, MJ locks up.  I rebooted, and the same thing happens each time I try.  I don't want to try changing anything myself until someone who knows more about this gets a chance to suggest my best option first.

Here is my system info now ...

Reinstalling MJ will probably fix it.

That's what I wanted to hear (it's also what I was going to try, but I wanted to hear it from an expert first).

The ATI TV Wonder is extremly proprietary as TV Tuners can be.  It does not play nice with third party software.  If you ever think of upgrading to XP, don't even bother installing it as it will lose functionality due to ATI's piss poor driver development and support.  My advice from experience (I had one) is to return it if you can and get a Hauppauge, AverMedia or Leadtek tuner.

I replaced my TV Wonder with the AverMedia TV Studio (~$60) and it works great with all my software - XP, PowerVCR, MJ8.

Joe Z,
I'm sure it's true in some cases, but I've had pretty good luck with ATI on my machines.  I have ATI TV Wonders working fine with MJ and XP Home on two machines.

TV Wonder VE was one of the first cards that I worked on, to add support in MJ. It works quite well with their latest driver. I only had one issue with it, after using it in MJ or other third party program, you can not go back to using ATI's own program without a reboot.

BigMike reported in this thread that a new beta driver is available from ATI and it solves this problem.

Sorry if my harsh words were from my personal experience.  Glad you fellas got it working fine.

I had mine for 2 year's and could capture at high resolutions (640x480) under Windows 98, but under XP the driver only allow vcd quality.  This was only one bug of many under XP.  The video quality was also quite poor compared to the vxd drivers under Win98.  The Avermedia was an immediate noticable improvement, which can hadnle TIVO-like time shifting.  Very cool.

OK, now I am worried.  I completely uninstalled MJ from my PC and reinstalled it and the same thing is happening.  I can't play any songs ... it locks-up every time I try to play a song.  I need help.

I am taking a random shot. Did you recently install IE 6.0?

I had a bad experience installing IE 6.0 (I forgot whether it was on Win98SE or Win2000, but it works fine on my WinXP), and uninstalled it immediately.

IE6 has been on my PC for a while actually. I think I need to Fdisk and rebuild my PC, because at this point I have lost ALL sound while trying to fix things.  When I do so, I will yell "F-disk!" (and "F" will stand for something, thanks probably to ATI)
