I was reading about recent improvements in MC12 regarding ASIO output.  I decided to try it, but I get the following error which I do not understand. I was hoping this would eliminate some of the problems I have with skipping, especially when I have CPU intensive tasks going.

Playback could not be started on the output 'ASIO' using format '44100 Hz, 32 Bits Per Sample, 2 Channels'.
This output format may not be supported by your hardware. You can use DSP Studio to change the output to a compatible format.

It's possible that my sound card does not even support it.  I have:
SigmaTel C-Major Audio v5.10.

Bose USB Audio is also listed as available for the output device (for a Bose Companion 5 system) but this does not work either.  I get the same message.

Any ideas?

You'll probably need to pick 48 khz in DSP Studio.

Many cards can't change their clock rates, and ASIO doesn't have any auto-magic resampling like DirectSound.

Hi Matt,

I tried it and it did not work.

There is an option to display diagnostics when starting ASIO.  I turned that on and get the following message:

=== ASIO Playback Starting ====

Device: BCA2000 ASIO (0 channel shift)
Buffer Type: 16 (0 samples)
Output Format: 48000 kHz - 2 channels
Post Output Ready: 0
ASIO Start Return Value: -1 (should be 0)
Plugin Open Return Value: -1 (should be 0)
Buffer 0 Pointer: 0

I'm not sure what it is saying, but it suggests that the ASIO Start Return Value and Plugin Open Return Value are incorrect.

I'm not an expert on sound cards.  Does anyone know how I would verify if my soundcard supports ASIO output?

You could try the manufacturer's web pages or google.

I downloaded ASIO4ALL to see if that would work.  It did, so I guess that tells me my SigmaTel C-Major Audio card must not support ASIO. 

I gave up however, as the ASIO4ALL output does not work with the Bose Companion 5 system.  So even if it is more efficient, it does not sound as good.

FWIW, I use Wave Out, vs ASIO4All, and I cannot tell the difference.  ASIO, by definition, is a heavier load on the CPU, and I can't hear any payback in sound quality.  Maybe I'm doing it wrong, and not getting true ASIO, but that's the point, isn't it?  Wave out works first time, every time, even if Bill G gets to laugh at us in the process.

I used to use Direct Sound, but I've now switched over to Wave Out. I'm not really sure what Direct Sound does versus Wave Out, but Wave Out is listed as supported for my Bose Companion 5 system.
