How to upgrade from 11?
« on: February 11, 2007, 06:49:24 pm »

I don't hang out here much. I installed Vista on a new computer and figured I might as well upgrade to MC12. Downloaded, installed. Now, I can't for the life of me figure out how to UPGRADE. I can only get to a BUY page where I can pay top price. A forum message says 11 to 12 is $19.98, but how do I do it? Do I need to install and restore 11 first? If so, do I now have to uninstall 12, install 11, restore, install 12, THEN be able to upgrade?

Sorry to be so stoopid. I even searched and can't find anything to help me.

Sorry for the trouble.  You need to have one of the preceding versions installed AND licensed.  Then you should get the upgrade price.

MC11.1 (recent versions) and MC12.0 can co-exist.  Safest would be to install MC11.1.201.   A link is on our FAQ here.

OK, not a big deal that.

But......do I need to uninstall 12 first, or can I just install and restore 11, go to pay for 12 and get the upgrade price?

While I have your ear, and without reading a thousand posts, do MC11 and MC12 work with Vista OK?

MC12 does.  We haven't spent any time testing MC11.  You shouldn't need to uninstall MC11.

I'm thinking you meant I don't need to uninstall 12 first, before installing and restoring 11 then upgrading to 12?

Wow, this is a big hassle.

I installed 11 without uninstalling 12. Trying to restore, it sent me 2 emails, and took away two restores, no big deal there. It didn't activate automatically. OK, check email, save mjr file to desktop, restore from file, it jumped to web site telling me it was registered. Start MC11 to be sure it was registered. It crashed. Start it again, seems OK, didn't check to see if it was registered, just figured it was because it just started. Close 11, run 12, try to buy, $39.98 full price. Run 11 again to check, tells me it has to run at least once with at least Power User privelages. OK, right click, Run as administrator. It's NOT registered. Register from file, jumps to web site telling me it's registered. This time, I think it is. Help/About says registered, Registration Info has stuff in it. OK, start 12 with right click, Run as Administrator (I'm getting smarter all the while here). Click Buy, NOW I get $19.98. It goes thru, doesn't register automatically. Wait for email, restore from file, WHEW, got it. Playing a song right this minute!!

Hope my wife or grandma doesn't have to do this! MJR file, what the hell is that? Why can't I just play my music, it always worked with that other thing (WMP), why are you always changing everything on this computer?

Sigh..............at lease I like this geek stuff.

No offense but, why are you early adopting Vista, and then complaining about odd software issues with it?

Early adopters get what they pay for, but usually understand that not everything (or anything) is going to work quite right.  Especially old stuff!  I would really hope that grandma is not running Vista!!  I know my parents and grandparents won't be for quite some time yet!

No complaints. Just thought someone else might be interested in what might need to be done to get MC 12 working on Vista, IF my experience was any indication. If NOT, they can ignore this.

I certainly wouldn't have bought and installed Vista if I didn't want the hassles. I love this. And Vista is pretty cool so far, if you've got the hardware to support it, which I DO!! And with many SATA hard drives, XP is only a reboot away!!

I'm mostly doing Vista so I know all this before coworkers and friends and family.........and grandma.......call to ask me where there pictures went NOW, after I just showed them they were in My Pictures and now there is no My Pictures!!! Plus I'm helping the Bill Gates Releif Fund and giving Ballmer something to rant about!!
