Problems getting Libraries and MC12 to work.
« on: March 18, 2007, 01:42:15 am »

A friend recommended that I give the program a try, so I downloaded it 4 days ago, and no matter what I've done over the last 4 days I just can't get it to work on my server no matter what I do.

The server I have here at home is running Windows 2003 Server Standard.  It's what I use to download all my videos too. My friend is using Windows 2003 SBS edition.

I tried to follow all the directions I found in the Wiki and any I could find using the search features on this board, but no matter what I try, I keep failing to get it to work.

Here's what I'm tried so far:

I chose the "Services and Plug-ins" -> "Library Server" option to start the server.
Then I go File -> Library -> Library Manager -> and point it to the directory I'm trying to test it with.  I then save this and close.

I then open the client on my desktop, a Windows XP install, and then do a "Search for Library Servers" to find the server.  It find the server ok it seems, and I see the videos from my test server.  I even open the "Library Server" plug-in to see if I'm connection.  I am confused though that it says "Received request for cover art: F:\Streaming Videos\Cartoons\Superman" but it dows show that my PC is connecting. But thats the only thing it shows as far as that windows goes.

But as soon as I click on an entry to try and video some streaming media I get this error:

________________________________________
Media Center encountered errors while trying to play the last several files.  Please make sure that the path in your media library points to the right location.

Error details

DirectShow: Interface not registered
Code=0x80040155
________________________________________

And that's all it does.  Nothing plays.  So I went to the "Disk Location" entry in the display tree on the left hand side of the screen. No go.  I then went to the "Recently Imported" section and tried to view a video.  It too showed me a list that looked correct, but nope I got the same error.

So under a suggestion from my friend I replaced my sound card with a new one and loaded all the codec's again.  Nope still the same error.  Then I mapped an Admin share to the drive and imported into the program that way.  That worked and I was able to view the files, but I can't create universal Playlist for everyone if I have to do that on every PC in my house. I then changed all the security to say "Full access" on all drives for all logged in users.  But that didn't work either, but the mapping of the admin share worked so I don't believe that could be the problem.  And my friend didn't have to do anything other than put it on the Library service he say's to get it to show up for the client.   I even had the "Media server" Icon showing in the system tray but that didn't work either.

So then I thought it must be a firewall issue, so I turned off the servers firewall.  Nope that didn't work either.  So I took out my laptop, loaded the MC12 program on it, and tried to connect to my desktop to see if the program would work for me at all.  That worked and I could view all my videos no problem first time out.  No fuss no muss and everything worked fine.

So I downloaded version 11 to see what would happen.  It let me connect to my server, but after the inital picture (about 1/2 a second into the video) the screen froze and then nothing happened.  I could see the video start to play, but it never got very far.  But I did see it start.  That was further than I was getting with MC12.  The only problem was that it crashed a lot so I went back to trying MC12

So I'm at a loss here.  I have no Idea why my Server won't work correctly with MC 12 and serve up video's like my desktop does with no problems or headaches.

Can someone please shed some light on what I need to do to get this to work?  I'd like to try and get it working before my 30 day trial is over if I could ;D

Can you play audio files?  An MP3, for example?

If you transfer one of the files that you can't play to your client PC, will it play there?

Not all files can be streamed from the Library Server.

I did try that.  I copied all the files from my normal desktop to the server so they worked from it first.

But I tried something different since I got some sleep,  ;D, I went back to my laptop and tried to see if "It" could connect to the server.  It appears to connect just fine.  So apprently the problem seems to be with my desktop not likeing the software since I can connect the laptop.  So I guess I'm trying to see if its a DirectX problem with my PC now.  I've re-downloaded DirectX and reinstalled it, but it didn't seem to matter I still get this error.  I'm currently trying to see what this error means from microsoft.  Since it appears to be a directx error.

I've not had any program not work on my desktop before, so this is strange  ?

Also I should mention what else I've done since last night  ;D

I did the admin share again (went to \\Servername\F$ - where I have the videos saved on my server) and when I go outside of MC12 to view any video, the videos play fine, they are all divx videos right now.  But if I try to play it through the MC 12 interface I get this error.  But only on my desktop, my laptop works fine.

My desktop has every codec out I believe because I do video encoding on it from time to time.  I even have a registered copy of Divx create on it as well.  I tried downloading "ffdshow" from source forge to see if I could fix just the single DirectShow Error, but that didn't work.  It still says the DirectShow Interface isn't registered.  I made sure that I had same version of divx on the server that I had on my local PC, but the server and the laptop both have player installed and the desktop has create.

Has anyone ever run into this before?  All my DirectX games play fine with no error, so I can't believe the error about DirectShow not being registered is correct.   ?

But I'll try anything.  I'll keep trying testing ;D

Well............ :(

I tried that and I get a new error "haali splitter unable to initalize".  I get that about 6 times, then I get a DirectShow: Unknown error now.

I tried reinstalling all the codec's I have on the server over again, but it still won't run.

I just may have to face the fact that it isn't going to work for me.   Maybe I'll trying to run it as a Virtual PC session to see what happens.

A new question,

I was talking with my buddy and he mentioned that I should ask about Dual Video cards in my main box.  My main box is:

AMD 246 Dual Opteron
Dual Nvidia GeForce 7950GT
2Gb Cosair Ram

I'm not using the Box in SLI Mode because I have two monitors on the system, but is that causing my Directshow Errors, possibly?

It isn't dual monitors that cause the problem.

It's probably a bad DirectShow filter.  A couple days ago, I had to uninstall mine (CCCP) and let MC re-install.  MC will install ffdshow if you visit google video and try to play a video.
