Stall
« on: March 24, 2007, 04:32:05 pm »

Today's the third or fourth time I've done the search-my-life-away... and I still can't find an answer... so... POST TIME!

Since moving to MC12 (many months ago), any action that involves certain types of changes causes MC to stall.

I thought it was the ID3V2 thing, so I disabled that (though it never caused this sort of stall previously). Nope.

Then I considered the fact that I can change a bunch of files' tags in seconds and it does nothing (such as album or genre changes - MANY at once)... so it really doesn't point that way.

It's consistently with cover art.
I store cover art in a specific folder and NOT in tags.
Dunno if that matters; but changing it didn't seem to help.

What happens is that AFTER the artwork has already been associated with all the files (per the little window) then it stalls for a minute or more. During that time, whatever track is playing continues to play fine; but it will not advance to a new track.

It could be related to thumbnail rebuilding. Please post you system info (MC Help>System Info).

What folder are you storing your cover art in specifically?

Music in X:\Music\
Cover Art in X:\Cover Art\

Both are on a NAS unit plugged in to the same Gig switch as the MC system.

Uh... and I did the update to the latest thinking it may help... and now I seem to be getting 90-100% processor utilization for (apparently) no reason... not sure what the deal is there or if it's at all related to this.  :'(
Weird thing: it does it for a while after restarting MC, then drops down where it should be.
Again, prolly unrelated... dunno.

Two possibilities:

Virus checker.

Driver problem for the NAS.

NAS doesn't have drivers - just shows up like any other server would.

Virus checker... okay, what file would be running that might affect it? I've seen it scanning things when they run and thus slowing things down, so I'll "buy" that premise... but it'd have to be when something happens - the virus checker doesn't affect all files. It's not scanning APE or FLAC or MP3... what files might it be scanning?

I can't help you on exactly what the problem is, but you could read about some similar ones here:

Search for "CPU".

I upgraded the Nvidia core drivers and the ATI video drivers and it's seconds now.

Thank you! ;D

Interesting... keeps (slowly) getting slower as I keep doing more... could be related to PC reboot (after drivers) or MC... dunno. Will diag a bit more. Still MUCH faster than it was.  :)

Follow up: gets worse over time. Faster after any reboot and a bit faster after a MC restart.

Nothing else on the PC seems to suffer from this. Perhaps nothing else is updating tags in dozens or hundreds of files... but I'd sure love it if MC could somehow provide some feedback in the logs or something of why this is occurring.

Is there some way to get feedback from MC on why the LONG stalls after cover-art is updated?

I'm still getting this stall. If I reboot the PC it is much less, then grows over time.

I realize it may not be a MC thing, but this is the only program I'm seeing strangeness with.

Any more suggestions?
