disappearing playlists with a d-link dsm 320
« on: May 01, 2007, 08:58:43 am »

Hi
I use MediaCentre 12 with a D-Link Dsm 320. It used to work fine, I apreciated the fact that the dsm could play the playlist from MediaCentre.
But since I reformated my hard drive and reinstalled everything, I just can't get the playlist to work anymore. The Dsm 320 can see and play my music, but when I choose the Playlists, I just get a message Unable to load folder.
My playlist are in the location they are supposed to be, in the directory "C:\Documents and Settings\Chrystian Barrière\Application Data\J River\Media Center 12\Library\Playlists".
When I use Tversity, I can get my Playlists to play... so i don't understand what happened.
Any help is apreciated.

Oh and by the way, I made a mistake, the message I get is No content available, not Unable to load folder.

What settings are you using? Especially transcoding...

By settings, do you mean what we can see in the upnp server options? I don't know what you mean by Transcoding. I don't see this word anywhere.
In the options, I have Convert Audio if necessary, MP3 Encoder, Port 1373, Receiver Dlink dsm320, and the checkmarks are the ones checked by default when the dlink is selected in the Receiver list.

OK I was suddenly inspired. I right-clicked on the the Audio button in the tree. Then I chose edit View Scheme.
In the Step 4 of that window (Pick files to show), if you click on Media Type, choose Playlist , then click on the small box next to Playlist. All the playlists are now selected.
And now it works. My DSM sees and plays all the lists.
Please explain why that works, or why wasn't it working?

I'm not sure what's going on here. I can't reproduce this. What you've done is create a view scheme that views your playlists. I don't know why the original "Playlist" item is not displaying them. I'd suggest re-installing Media Center, or backup up and restoring your libray.

Hello again,
Well well. The problem reappeared, just after I installed the latest version of MediaCenter this week! It was all OK on my DSM320 since I did what I described in the previous messages. But after I anstalled this week's version, again the DSM doesn't see the playlists. But this time, the trick with the "Edit View Scheme" doesn't work. I tried backing up  and restoring, as you suggested, but that doesn't change anything.
If I go see in the Application Data folder, there is a Playlist folder inside the Library folder, there are a bunch of files (like mediafiles.jmd) with today's date (June 23), but all the m3u files in that folder are still with an April 28 date on them, why don't they have a June 23 date.
Where are the m3u files supposed to be when we do a library backup? I am lost.

Try disabling conversion all together, assuming you're using mp3's or something the DSM supports.  I would also try creating a new playlist and trying a smartlist and a normal playlist.

Okay - I think I have an idea what's going on.

Start MC, and click on the "Playlists" item in the tree. It is between "Podcasts" and "Drives and Devices". What do you see? I'm guessing that at some point you removed the playlists visible there. This is what the DSM-320 will see when it goes to playlists at the top level.

Instead, you have some playlists stored as a view scheme in a different portion of the tree. You need to do 2 things:
1) Make sure the view scheme is visible in theater view
2) Navigate through the tree in the same way on the DSM-320 (i.e., don't choose "Playlists" at the top level, instead, choose audio, then the playlist view scheme you built.
