Playing Now Suggestion
« on: May 09, 2007, 01:21:59 pm »

I've been designing several new Track Info template for use with MC12. Many of them are designed to incorporate hyperlinks to external sites for additional information (songfacts, yahoo music, all music, etc.) I launch them in a separate IE7 browser set to full screen because of the lack of backwards navigation in MC12. This is not really so bad anyway.

I also use these links to search for cover art, lyrics, etc to update my library. I found that many times while listening to a track someone will ask "What else do you have by this artist?" I have already setup my library view to display 3 tabs with Now Playing, Display and full library tabs. I don't see any way to filter that display dynamically. I think it would be great to provide a view option (either pre-defined or using a filter) that could allow a library view specific information based upon the track that is currently palying. For example, allow for variables to be passed to a library view that would filter the data based upon Artist, Album, Even song for those of us with multiple version of the same song. It seems that this may be possible with some of the advanced expression options of the library view if it would recognize passed variable.

Just my $.02

This is probably not what you're after (not an automated way), but you're just one click away of that feature. Right-click the current playing file in the tab showing Playing Now and chose Locate-> Artist. Sorry if it's too obvious... but don't know if you're new to MC and perhaps you were not aware of that feature.

I'm not sure what you mean, but try hitting backspace on any web page in MC.  A back button can also be added by customizing the toolbar (top or bottom).  Right click on the toolbar to begin customization.

The back that I am referring to is in the MC browser not MC itself. The browser does not seem to honor a backspace key.

As far as the locate artist, I've been using that method. I've been able to automate almost all of my theater view, display and track info visualizations to a single mouse click. I was just hoping that there was a way to have the capability to edit the view scheme to allow pre-defined variables to be passed to the smartlist filters rather than just hard coded filters. I can certainly live with the locate option but I thought it may be a good suggestion in further automating MC12. Plus, I use the Gyration remote control and have a few listeening zones. It gets a bit difficult to control the mouse cursor that accurately in the air.

It should.  Are you using a current build?

Try adding a back button to see if that works.

I'm using 12.0.226 and can not navigate backwards in the browser. My trackinfo templates are simply HTML pages. I can't add a back button since I'm linking to external sites suh as Yahoo, etc. I already have a backspace defined on my Gyration remote so it would be real turnkey to be able to press the button and return to the trackinfo display.

I just tested the back button on the toolbar in 12.0.226.  It works as advertised.  Try adding it.  You could back through any web pages you use.  Backspace also works.

As a test, try going to MC's start pages, and choose one of the links.  Then try backing up.

I think what he's talking about is that if you click on a hyper link in a Track Info page (probably in Display View), there is no way to go back to the track info page.  I can confirm this.

Skeeterfood...
That is EXACTLY what I'm talking about. There is no web browser backwards navigation.

You should look into NetRemote.  You could build a NetRemote interface to MC that will do all of that stuff and much more.  I have single buttons for example that show me more tracks by the current artist, more tracks on the current album or more albums by the current artist with one further click to Play, Add or PlayNext any of the tracks displayed. My NR interface has completely revolutionised how I use the power of MC.  Here's a sample, though this is an old copy:

I like the idea of netremote. However, I tested Netremote and and Mainlobby. Although they both seem to have very nice user interfaces they do not allow video playback. I have several hundred MP4 music videos that I intermix in my playlists. Of course through these applications they play the audio portion only.

I saw a thread about suggestions to theater view improvements. In the thread were screen samples from what appeared to be a front end for MC that would support video and TV playback as well. Here is the thread. Does anyone know what that application is?

I believe the first pair is MediaPortal.   The next screenshot is Microsoft's Media Center Edition.
