Theater View crashes MJ
« on: June 03, 2007, 06:23:44 pm »

I am finishing up a windows server 2003 client box, and it looks like everything is working but Theater View.  If I try to go into theater view, MJ12 crashes with the message: "Faulting application Media Center 12.exe, version 12.0.240.0, faulting module Media Center 12.exe, version 12.0.240.0, fault address 0x00425c85".

I just downloaded and installed the latest directx, ATI catalyst drivers, and MJ12.  Any ideas?

A coincidence. I was going to post the same problem.

I'm having a problem when starting MC12 in a Remote Desktop session.
I've set up MC to start in TheaterView which is fine when it is started
on the HTPC but when i start MC in the remote session it immediatly crashes.

So i'm sure this is related to the 3D DirectX display in TheaterMode.
MC should add some catch-blocks to prevent MC from crashing when using
TheaterMode in an unsupported way.

Remote desktop doesn't support direct3d

I think that solves my problem. Thanks.

If you need theater view access remotely, try RealVNC instead of remote desktop connection.

I'm aware that Remote Desktop doesn't support direct3d.
But MC shouldnt crash. It should switch to normal view instead.

I agree, but I wonder if it's realyy something JRiver can address.  Microsoft may not be passing a usable error condition that they can trap for.
Fortunately my htpc is close enough to my ht equipment that I don't need remote desktop.  I use a handheld remote.
I only use remote desktop when away from home, and won't need theater view from there.

11.1 doesn't use 3D in Theater View.  That might work for you.  It will work with an MC12 license.

My original issue has nothing to do with remote desktop - I don't use it on this box.  I do use Remote Administrator, but that's OT.

Any other ideas?  Is there an issue with Server 2003?  I had this same configuration running under XP just fine.

The issue is probably not an MC problem.  It is probably a 3D graphics problem in the configuration you're using.  Try google to see if you can learn more about similar problems involving 3D drawing.

There is a known incompatibility with Server 2003 with terminal services installed, direct3d (which theaterview is), and NVidia drivers.  The combination of the three make anything direct3d crash.  Doesn't matter if you're using terminal services or not.
Only fixes are to switch to an ATI card if you have NVidia or completely uninstall terminal services.

I use terminal services a lot, so I had to switch cards.
