Media Center 12.0.279
« on: July 11, 2007, 08:40:24 am »

This is the latest version of MC 12.0.  Any MC12.0 license will work with it.  Please post bugs here.  Please start a new thread for anything requiring discussion.  Non-bug posts will be deleted or moved.

This latest build (usually safe) of MC12.0 is here:
ftp://ftp.jriver.com/pub/downloads/MC12/MediaCenter120279.exe

12.0.279 (07/10/07)

1. Fixed: Installer didn't remember that "Associate with audio CDs" was checked.
2. Changed: Default Feeds are now downloaded from the Web instead of being provided with the player (so they can be changed often).
3. Fixed: Options trees weren't drawing their borders. (introduced in 278)
4. Changed: Audio Renderers are removed from DirectShow graph (instead of just being silenced) when analyzing video files (to prevent audio renderers from changing audio device's sample rate during Auto Importing).
5. Fixed: "Export All Playlists" was incorrectly disabled in the menu.
6. Fixed: Theater View lineup list style could leak resources.
7. Fixed: Video spool image was being added to the wrong thumbs in pix01.
8. Fixed: New gallery names with new users could cause some issues.
9. Changed: Password related warning text added to Pix01 login dialog.
10. Fixed: FileAssociations would not change value if previously associated with Media Center.
11. NEW: double-clicking an OPML file will subscribe to the podcasts contained in it.
12. Changed: Small tweak to how rating is saved in ID3v2 tags to possibly help compatibility with some programs.
13. NEW: Added "Custom size" to the handheld engine image conversion choices.

12.0.278 (7/06/07)

1. Changed: Anti-aliasing and anisotropic filtering are optional (off by default) in Theater View. (Options > Theater View > Advanced)
2. Changed: Right-click menu in Display View has a command to exit to standard view. (previously if coming from Theater View, this was not possible)
3. Fixed: DSP Studio still wasn't opening unless a file was playing.
4. Changed: The play button / space bar no longer do anything in Theater View when a file list isn't focused.

12.0.277 (7/05/07)

1. Changed: when both CD Text and a CDPlayer.ini entry exist for a CD, the meta data is taken from CDPlayer.ini
2. Fixed: In Podcasts, getting a content URL was too agressive when the enclosure url was invalid.
3. Fixed: Audio Conversion is now ignored for images and video in Library Server.
4. Fixed: Certain MP3 streams (or playlists) did not play correctly due to problems handling ICY metadata.
5. Optimized: Improved Theater View drawing pipeline to improve performance substantially in many cases.
6. Changed: Revised how Theater View projects and places pieces on the screen. (internal change -- please report any alignment issues)

12.0.276

Not released.

12.0.275 (7/03/07)

1. Changed: Logging for podcasts.
2. Fixed: FTP helper error with files divisible by 256.
3. Fixed: DSP Studio wasn't opening unless a file was playing.

Hi

I see you're keeping up the good work while I'm away. Since version 250 I get a crash each time I shutdown MC12. In the picture below you can see the details I get. If you need more info. I can reproduce the situation easy, because it happens every time I shutdown MC12. I've deinstalled all the plugins I had written myself to rule out a crash in them.

Paul.

Here's the compat file created during the crash: http://www.paulsinnema.net/downloads/2262_appcompat.txt

My Quicktime MOV Podcasts are acting oddly with this version, and at least the prior few versions (I rolled back to 277 with no change).  I suspect it might happen with any MOV file, but I don't have any right available currently to test (give me till tomorrow).

When I play them, they usually play fine.  However, there is some unusual behavior:

1) I have Options --> General --> Jump on Play set to Playing Now (if has display).  All AVI, MPEG, and MKV files work properly, but the MOV files do not open Playing Now when I play them.  Instead, the Display Action Window opens as though I had played some music instead.  Same goes for in Theater View as well.  Instead of playing in Full Screen, they open in the "thumbnail" display.

2) When they play, despite playing properly (despite issue #1), I get the yellow error triangle which replaces the item's icon.  Also, sometimes if I play one of them, stop playback, and then immediately play the file back again, it will give me the "failed to play" error.  After I dismiss the error, I can then play the file (but it acts like described above).

3) This only seems to affect video podcasts that have fully downloaded.  If I start playback (without downloading) on one of the episodes that hasn't started downloading, the MOV files play back properly in the Playing Now window, unless it gives me the "too long filename" error message.

4) I tried copying one of the MOV files to my desktop and playing it from there by drag-dropping the item to the Playing Now display window.  It Analyzed the file and then reported "There is Nothing to Play".  Here's the relevant log stuff:

Code: [Select]
0792625: 4040: Import: JRAnalyzer::AddFileQT: Start
0792625: 4040: Import: JRAnalyzer::AddFileQT: Filename: C:\Documents and Settings\emr\Desktop\2007-07-11 ABC World News - VIDEO (Enhanced), 07.11.07 (UPDATED).mov, File Type: mov

0793141: 3232: Import: JRAnalyzer::AddFile: Finish (609 ms)

4) I've had other issues with M4V files, including serious loss of sync viewing the NBC Nightly News Podcast here: http://podcast.msnbc.com/audio/podcast/MSNBC-NN-NETCAST-M4V.xml

5) Monday afternoon I had some serious issues with MC completely locking up when trying to analyze (or maybe build a thumbnail for) a bad (perhaps partially-downloaded) MOV file from this podcast: http://abcnews.go.com/xmldata/xmlPodcast?id=2102937.  Whenever I would navigate MC to view a list of my podcasts which included this "bad" file, the entire application would completely freeze up.  The CPU usage would spike to 50% solid (on a dual-core CPU), and neither MC or Windows Explorer would respond to any commands.  I could pull up Task Manager via Ctrl-Alt-Del, but ending task on either the MC task or the Windows Explorer tasks had no effect.  Manually killing the process tree also had no effect.  The system was completely unresponsive and I was forced to shut it down forcefully by holding down the power button.  This happened more than once.  I found the bad file by pulling up the Log and analyzing the bad file was the very last line.  I assumed at that time that it was just a "very bad file".  However... Now I suspect there's something wrong with MCs Quicktime handling.

I have the latest built of Quicktime installed, and I've tested on multiple machines: my AMD Opteron HTPC, my Core2 Duo MacBook Pro (BootCamp, not Virtualized), and my office Pentium D machine.  All are acting the same.

EDIT: Looks like it might be podcast specific... I just downloaded today's ABC World News video podcast manually in Firefox to my desktop and then drag-dropped it into MC and it's working properly, so it seems to have something to do with the podcast downloading, file naming, or storage.

I've also had a few hard-locks in MC this evening while testing it and playing these MOV and M4V files back (but JUST playing them) for the purposes of writing this post.  In these cases, I was able to end-task on the MC task in Task Manager.

Also , all of the MOV files I've checked thus far work flawlessly in Quicktime Plaer.

2007-07-11 ABC World News - VIDEO (Enhanced), 07.11.07 (UPDATED).mov

This filename has 68 characters. Did you try a shorter filename?

QuickTime for Windows cannot play cannot play files with filenames longer than 63 characters. I wonder why Apple hasn't fixed this problem. It has been known for years and constantly reported in various places, here's an example: http://labnol.blogspot.com/2006/10/limitations-with-long-file-names-on.html.

I guess you didn't try the same files with the same too long filenames. I just tried to rename one of my mov files to "2007-07-11 ABC World News - VIDEO (Enhanced), 07.11.07 (UPDATED).mov" and QT Player couldn't play it.

I posted about an "Out Of Memory" error a while back.

Now it's occurring on my wife's laptop which I use to run a scheduled alarm to stir me  at about 6am. MC will continue playing music IIRC but keeps prompting with a *beep* and the message window while MC can not be accessed and closed only with Task Manager.

I can post a log later; this on XP Pro SP2 with MC12.0.279. No 3rd party extras installed except PlayingNow (does that count anymore?).

thanks

Noire skin in Negative mode does not display text in Panes and very often the Tile size slider is not shown.

You're right in that one case, which was a poor example I guess... but that doesn't explain everything, because:

1) That's what MC chose to name the file.  It should know better when it's downloading Podcasts.

2) This issue (the playing but MC not thinking it "has a display") affects ALL MOV podcast files downloaded, regardless of the name assigned.  And, as I mentioned, MC IS successfully playing the files.

I have 2 MC pc's sharing the same database,

so the first started is read/write and the second is read/only (p.s. some indicator on the screen if jrmc is read-only would be nice)

I can't play podcasts on the read-only pc.
I just see 'waiting to load http://.....xml'

it works fine on the read/write pc....

This was by design, but I've changed it to behave better. You can now view and play the podcasts on the read-only library.

Small bug in all the 'Track Info' visualizations:

Add a track to Playing now.  Album art displays as expected.  After hitting Stop and then Play buttons album art does not display - it's replaced by a little white box with a red X in it.  Using the right-click menu to select the same or another 'Track Info' viz brings the art back.  Also, with 'Noire Viz', clicking the Viz link brings the art back.

This happens with tracks that have album art and with those that don't (like internet radio).

I've been seeing that one also for a little while. Just checked with the latest build and it's still there.

I've noticed a bug: if you are in the left panel's "Disk location" view, clicking on a "All" icon doesn't limit the display to the files under the father directory of the "All" icon, but displays always all the files in the disk drive.
I hope that my description is understandable.... if not I'll try to describe the bug a little further.
Thanks for the good job.

Operation:  Sync Handheld
Device: Rio Karma
Options: Delete from Handheld any files Not on Sync List
Sync To Playlist: RiO

Rio Karma Capacity Reported: 18.6 GB
Space Used: 16.8

Playlist "RiO" total files = 18.6
Problem: MC reports - 8.6 GB Over Capacity
 ?

attempting to sync anyway, MC says "Working" in th esync window but "Waiting" next to the files, meanwhile my RiO goes from "Communicating" to "Finished" in an endless loop. No files get transferred or deleted during this.

this forces me to wipe the entire RiO drive to sync or MC thinks it cannot fit . . . not much sense in that eh?

Just installed MC on a new Vista Business Vaio, and noticed that you cannot drag highlight in panes or lists.

Everything else seems to work great!

Is anyone else running vista noticing this?

Thanks

MC crashes when Direct X Host plugin is installed.  As soon as I go to DSP dialogue, MC crashes. This is with Vista installed.  With XP no problems, doin't know if that is the issue though.

Using Vista 64 Home Premeuim

1.  Noticed this one under XP as well and under MC11 and 12.  When printing with the Memorex cover labels the printing is upside down.  More precisely the page is upside down.  Also image has to be moved to the right .05"

2.  When selecting songs and going to the cd-labeler the information is not being transmitted to the program so all your getting is blank fields.

Thanks!

Yep, this has always been the case for me in Vista, think I reported a few months back, it's quite annoying and would be good to get it sorted!

Here's a few quirks:

1. Seen this with various builds. 'Hiding' Playing Now in PluginManager can crash MC (possibly only when the PN is grabbing art for upload to FTP).

2. If you resize MC in Tiles mode, the highlighted album loses focus. I have a couple thousand albums and I was on the "W" artists. When I resized MC to drag a file onto the Tile, I was on "L".

3. Noire skin still doesn't show text in Tab boxes. Hard to explain how MC works to someone who wants to use the Noire skin.

4. MKV that plays perfectly in ZoomPlayer won't even be attempted to play in MC. I have CCCP pack installed. Maybe something change with support for MKV; I used to play them in MC. I just found it odd that MC wouldn't even attempt to play the file when I double click.

5. Choose/Add file window never allows the scrollwheel on my mouse to be used even after a file or folder is selected. e.g. Cover Art>Add from file

Hi Folks,

Currently I have version 12.0.139 and am trying to upgrade to 12.0.279.  I can download the file just fine but when I try to install it I get the following message:

Can not start program 'C:\Docume~1\Steven~1\Locals~1\Temp\InstallPackage - 3008.tmp'.  Error Inknown (31)

Actually, I haven't been able to upgrade since my current version for the same reason.  Does anyone have any insight into this problem?  Below is the system information.  Thanks in advance.

Hiya,
Another silly little bug. By no means a show-stopper, or anything particularly significant but still!
When importing folders of files, the only folder image file that is recognised is folder.jpg- In other words
Quote
folder.jpg - Works & associates with the album correctly
folder.gif - Doesn't associate with the album, shows up as a dissasociated image.
folder.png - Same results as the gif

Would be nice if the folder image was associated with the album contained within it, regardless of file format :)

I dont know if it specific to this build, but when I go to "CD & DVD" in Theater View, I get a Theater View Dialog that says "CD Lookup Failed" with a cancel button, which is then covered by a standard MC dialog titled "Please Wait" with "Working" and a Cancel button within - which seems to prevent access to the Theater View dialog.

At this point my MCE remote is useless, and clicking the standard dialog box "Cancel" locks out MC altogether, requiring task manager.

There is no problem at the standard view.

I just discovered the 'multiple views in tab format'. Great!!
One small thing.
I am using the Pixos skin with Skin Effect > negative.
For the active Tab (view 1) this works: tab is light with black writing.
The inactive tabs are poorly readable: tab is black\grey with black writing. If this could be grey, it would be fixed.
Thnx.

Another one on the 'multiple views per tab'.
When using a view in row format I have the 'reset selection option' available, when using pane selections.
I use this a lot.
When a view has the tab format, this option is gone.
Could the 'reset selection' option be added to the dropdown when switched to tab format?

12.0.278 (7/06/07)

4. Changed: The play button / space bar no longer do anything in Theater View when a file list isn't focused.

Thanks alot for that one! Me and my often drunk visitors will be much less confused now!

In Panes or Tiles I can select multiple fields e.g. Albums.

I have one instance where I cannot.

I try to select

Lee Perry 7" CD1
Lee Perry 7" CD2
Lee Perry 7" CD3
Lee Perry 7" CD4
Lee Perry 7" CD5
Lee Perry 7" CD6
Lee Perry 7" CD7

sequentially.

What happens is that CD1's files are displayed. Then 0 files are displayed when I click on CD1 & CD2. When CD1, CD2, CD3 are selected together, only CD3's files are displayed. The process starts over once CD4 is selected (0 files selected).

In this view scheme I can multi-select any albums except these. I have noticed this behavior before but not sure if was with similarly named albums. These are all Multiple Artist albums
that are in unique folders for each album.

All drives having Burning Speed Options limited to

MAX
2X
1X

Nero allows 4X-48X.

Using Nero 7.0.1.4 for a LONG time.

I've also been seeing the "Insert A Blank Disc" and I can't complete a burn on my Plextor (IDE).

After I clear the burn queue and insert a disc into another drive for a new burn I get the error "Insert Blank Media" when blank media has been inserted into the new drive; a restart of Mc fixes this.

After an extended and questionable lead-in duration, I was able to burn the same playlist to my USB Lite-On burner at Max speed.

This is probably very frustrating but the program suddenly has stopped crashing. Nothing changed, nothing de/installed. No new version installed. No plugin de/installed. But it doesn't crash anymore. Sorry!

Tagging Bug
« Reply #35 on: July 25, 2007, 03:45:42 am »

I have a viewing scheme with the following panes: genre, country, artist, album;
  • From the country pane I select "Unassigned" so all artists which do not have a country assigned will be listed.
  • Now I select an Artist e.g. "Joe" - the list below shows up all songs from "Joe" with "Unassigned" country - still OK.
  • Now I click back on the country pane to "Unassigned" and try to give "Joe" a meaningful country e.g. "Britain".
  • Now MC wants to tag all files from the viewing scheme instead of only tagging "Joe" with "Unassigned" country.
I hope this explanation is understandable ...

Additional Info: My viewing scheme is configured as "Filter in both directions".

many thx

  • Now MC wants to tag all files from the viewing scheme instead of only tagging "Joe" with "Unassigned" country.
I hope this explanation is understandable ...

Additional Info: My viewing scheme is configured as "Filter in both directions".

many thx

Try doing step 1 and 2, then selecting all files listed.
If the country you would like to apply is visible in the pane already, click inside the little square box you should now see to the right of your chosen country, say "Yes" to enable tagging mode, and you're done.
If the country is not in the pane already, click in the little square tick box you should see beside "New Country", say "Yes" to enable tagging mode and I think you'll be OK on your own from there.
(F4 toggles tagging mode on and off)
If not, start a new thread and we'll take it from there.

Again, not really a bug as such, just a slightly misleading/ misphrased option  :)
In the tagging part of the options dialog, there is a checkbox called "Update tags when file info changes"
To me that suggests that MC will update its internal database tags when the tags in the file change, but its actually the other way around, meaning that this box has to be checked to write tags back to the file (Confused me for several minutes!). I'd suggest that it be renamed to something along the lines of "Enable updating of external tags"

Closely related to this, there really needs to be an option to entirely ignore any tags present in the source file- At the moment, if the tags are changed by an external program (WMP11 seems to be the major culprit here), choosing to import files again (For example if I run an import on the root of my media drive to catch things in new subfolders), any tags which WMP has changed are always brought into MC, & IMHO this is undesirable behaviour, unless the user specifically asks for it.

Cheers
