Cannot play a CD
« on: August 09, 2007, 02:57:18 pm »

I hope somone can help me. I posted a message last night, and I have yet to get any kind of assistance. I'm running the new version of J River. For some reason, I cannot play a CD within the software. If I open the disc up in the file menu, I get a message that says, "There is nothing to play". It isn't reconizing that there is a disc in the CDRom To play. Can anyone out there shed some light on this. I've tried everything and nothing is working.I have tired to uninstall it and re-install it, but I still am already registered. I wanted to do a clean install but cannot seem to register the software myself. It's always registered for me.

Under drives and devices, in the tree on the left, find the CD and press play.  That should work.

If you need to post again, please use reply to your existing thread instead of starting a new one.

Have you tried multiple CD's?  Are they purchased or CD's you burned?

These are CD's that I purchased and I tried what you suggested and it doesn't work. I tried closing the software out and opening it again. Nothing! I can't figure this out.  ?

Can you play with Windows Media Player?

What other CD related software is installed?

Please copy your system info from MC Help and paste it here.

Let us know which drive letter you're trying.

I had this problem before, several times. I've found out that it wasn't MC's fault but the DVD/CD drive. Check to see if your computer recognizes the CD. Check My Computer and try playing the CD in WMP or any other player.

Every time this has happened to me I had to replace my DVD/CD drive...thanks god for warrenties  ;D

I cannot play it in Windows Media, but it will play in Winamp. Where would I fiind info from MC Help? I don't know how to do this. I don't think I need to replace my drive. I never had a problem before.

Open Windows Explorer and find the disk, then try to play it.

Open Windows Media Player and do the same.

Choose Help on Media Center's menu, then choose system info.  That will copy some text to your clipboard.

Then paste it into a message here.  Ctrl-V will paste.  Or a right click with your mouse and then choose paste.

It looks like you have two drives.  Is the problem identical on both?

Yes I do have two drives. One is CDRW, the other one is a separate DVD Drive. Yes it's the same situation on Both drives.

I don't know, but if you can't play CD's with Windows Media Player, then there's something going on that isn't related to MC.

But why would I be able to use other programs to play stuff. I use winamp and dbpower. The CD's play in those but not MC

I don't know, but, as I said, if it's also happening with WMP, it's not an MC problem.

The comment above about the possibility of a bad drive has to be considered.

If it were my machine, I would uninstall any software related to the drives.

tboy34, you might try and update your MC 12.0.279 to the latest version (Media Center 12.0.301).
Not sure it will help, but It's always good to try.

Jim,

Could this have something to do with the BIOS in Windows. Because I just experienced something weird. I tried again to play the CD within MC but a mp3 started to play. It seems that the CDROM is working fine, but the direction or association is messed up. Do I make any sense?

When this happened to you, were you able to play CD's within Windows Media? Were you able to play CD's in other software and not in another one?

tboy,

First, I place the CD in the CDROM drive, Normally it starts up itself. Then starts to play in MC. But it starts and I get a message that says WARNING! There is nothing there to play. That is it.

I have even gone into "Open File" Select the E:Drive which is AUDIO and click on a track on the audio CD and nothing. I still get the same message.

In MC I go to File, Open media file, then to the D:Drive and open my media folder. I highlight the track within the E:Drive and and open it up. That is when I get the message that says: There is nothing there to play. Now I just tried that again later on last night. When I did what I just listed, on a CD. It now starts to play that last mp3 that was played. Plus, the light on the CDROM Drive on the tower is just blinking but not playing. In Windows Media Player I get a message that says that WMP cannot play the file. It doesn't reconize it. I can't figure this out. I guess my CDROM Drive is damaged in some kind of way. It's probably a result of why I had to re-install Windows anyway.

First I want to thank you all for your input.  All is okay now! I spent all day reformatting my hardrive and re-installing Windows XP Professional. J River now plays CD's and does all the wonderful things it does. I have no problems now. Thanks again for all of you're help. :) ;) :)
