I don't often get excited about new hardware, but this one looks like a minor breakthrough.

A scanner that has built-in capability to e-mail documents or save them to an FTP server, shared drive, or USB drive for about $2000.

our old hp officejet 9100 at the office can send emails (never used) and save to windows share, I don't know it can access ftp servers

just quickly checked the hp sites to see if new (=available) products have these features, but I couldn't find anything (but i checked very quickly)

anyway, it's small and neat, but 2000US$.... I'd rather keep using a standard PC + scanner combo

Directly from the printer?  Or from the PC software.  The latter has been around a while.  I've not seen the former until now.

I have a HP L7780, It Does Not Do FTP Or E-Mail, But You Can Use Use "Digital Filing" Save To Drives, Network Drive, Memory Cards Etc...

Oh of course.  We need no PC requirement because they are so tough to obtain--especially at the current prices.

In a corporate environment, 'running costs' of a PC are usually 4-5x the initial purchase price.

So yes, there is a huge market for appliances like this.

In our office, we have printers and faxes in a central location, where there is no PC.

Being able to scan to e-mail may be a better experience than fax for some documents.  With a good user interface, sending an invoice should be as fast and easy to do as sending a fax, and deliver a better quality image to the recipient.  At the recipient's end, it makes it easy to file.

On top of that, most mid-range and all high-range copiers have some really nice scanner functionality built-in to them.  We can scan to email or a shared CIFS/SAMBA folder or wherever.

No, I agree completely.  I started a new job/internship today and the business I'm working for does exactly that--printers and scanners mainly in set locations.  Even at home, all our 5 laser printers (4 black, 1 color) are networked and most aren't near computers.  Nice because we can print in 4 different rooms on all three levels so we can print things to where another person may be at for their reading.  Just imagine running 4 (1 has a built-in print server) computers 24/7.  No way!  One server is doable but no more!  I guess I technically run two.  The second is Smoothwall (new version).

I would really like a scanner that simply scanned documents to my file server (SAMBA)!  It would be great for scanning receipts, etc and reducing paper savings overall.

In the home, people are even more likely to want computer-free items because it may be convenient to have a scanner in the kitchen by where mail is opened and a computer would be very impractical.  Yep, costs of running computers are high as well!
