Data base already in use
« on: October 17, 2007, 10:55:41 am »

I already have one out there but you didn't answer my question to my problem.

When I bring up MC I've started recently getting a message saying 'data base already in use, updates will not be saved'.

I have to do a reinstall everytime to bring up MC.  What do you think is
causing this problem.

Says database is read only

Thanks,
Skylar  ?

Are you running two copies of Media Center? Is that option checked?

Please post your system info.

If no one gets your question the first time around, you can reply to yourself with the word "bump", we'll see it.

No I'm not.  Just the one that my icon is pointing to.  Like I said, after I reinstall it
it comes up find but if I close it down then try to bring it back up again, it says
the data base is being use already and places the db in ready mode only.  I even checked the task master and I only see one running

Where or how could I check this.

Thanks, Skylar

First, let's make sure MC is not running:
Check the processes tab in Task Manager (not the Applications tab), see if there's a Media Center 12.exe process.
If there is, but MC is not in the Applications tab, you'll have to kill it. But - let me know if it is there, that's a problem.

Next, let's kill the lock (make very very sure that MC is not running, either as an application or a process).
Take a look at your library directory (where the library is stored, not where music, images, and video are stored, this is probably
C:\Documents and Settings\skylarplane\Application Data\J River\Media Center 12\Library) and see if the file "lock.jmd" is there.
Remove it if it is. Let me know if you cannot remove it, that's a problem.

Now start MC (it should start without the message, if it does, let me know, that's a problem). Use it for a bit if you'd like.
Then, turn on debug logging, clear the log (under Help->Logging...) and then exit Media Center.

Now, check for the process and the lock file again. Start MC (ignore the message) and look at the previous log, post it and the details here.

It showed in both tabs that it is running.  I scanned for the lock file and could not find it.

So now, I reset the log file and closed down MC and should I try restarting it
again, correct.  Now if it comes back up again with the same lock error
on the database, should I again re execute the install to get MC going again
and then check the log file again.  Should that have (errors) that we're
looking for.  If so, then email it to you?

Thanks for your help in this.  Skylar

OK, I cleared the log and attempted to restart MC but got the same error.
Do you want me to email the log, which I've saved in a zip file by
clicking on 'send log to email'.  Let me know which email address to
send it to.

Thanks, Skylar

Let's do this in smaller steps. First, we need to find your lock file.

Start MC (ignore the error message). Using Windows Explorer, go to the directory above to see if the lock file is there. It should be (don't delete it). If it isn't let me know and we'll find it. If it is, we'll go on to the next step.

Next a few steps:

1) Re-install MC.
2) Make sure the lock file is NOT there.
3) Start MC
4) Make sure the lock file IS there.
5) Exit MC
6) See if the lock file is there or not
7) See if MC is in the Process tab of Task Manager

Try that, let me know what happens. Please follow the steps carefully, and let me know if the early steps break, and the results of steps 6 and 7.

OK I deleted the lock file.  Reinstalled MC and the lock file is there again. I then closed down MC because it always comes up OK after reinstalling, when I tried to bring it up gave me the same read only on the data base and wouldn't come up.  But now I don't see the lock file at all.

To confirm:
1) Look in the Process tab of Task Manager - there is no Media Center 12.exe process.
2) Look in the Applications tab of Task Manager - there is no Media Center.
3) The lock file is not there.
4) Starting MC produces the error message about the database already being in use.

OK...after I brought it down, no tabs showed it running and I didn't see the lock file.  After bringing it down and tried to restart it, I got the same error.  I reinstalled MC and it came up and I could see the lock file again with '0' size.

Can we come back to this in the morning.  I have to run off to a staff meeting.
I truly appreciate all of your help.

For some reason I can seem to copy and paste it but here is the text.

                          Data Base Read Only
This database is in use already by another user
It will be opened in ready mode only.  Any program changes will be lost when
the program exits.

Same user on both sides of this question.  Again, when I go to launch it
I get this message, so then I have to go back to the install and re-execute
it and it comes up fine.  But if I bring it down and click on the ICON again,
I get the same message

The only way to get this message is if it cannot create the lock file. Please double check:

1) Install MC.
2) Check that the lock file is there.
3) Exit MC
4) Check that the lock file is not there.
5) Start MC. This should cause an error.
6) See if the lock file is there or not.

Let me know the results of steps 2, 4, and 6 please.

OK.
I checked before starting and it wasn't there
I reinstalled and it was there
I exited and click on the icon and got the error
I checked and it wasn't there.
One additional display I'm getting is:
The instruction at 0x100446bd reference memory at 0x01a1a2d0
The memory could not "read"

Using Notepad, try to create a file in the same directory (use the name skylar.tmp or something like that). Does it succeed?

Doesn't matter, but try while MC is not running.

I'll be away for a bit doing hardware maintenance, I may not get back to this before this evening.

I've sent you (to the e-mail address you used for this forum) a testing build of Media Center.

Please follow these steps:

1) Install the test build.
2) After MC runs, go to Help->Logging
3) Turn on logging to a file, make sure at least general is selected.
4) Exit MC.
5) Start MC, (the error message should pop up)
6) Help->Logging and click on "E-mail log files"

Send them to me (you should have e-mail from me).

Thanks,

Mondays are always busy, sorry.

The log file you sent me is from the wrong version. Please install the version at the URL I sent you, (check Help->About Media Center and it should be 12.0.352, not 12.0.338), and try again.

OK after reinstalling your version and I cleared and turned on the logging.
After I exit, then I'm going to click on my current Icon to get the error.
Then am I going to reinstall your version to send the log or am I going
to reinstall my current version to send the log.
