MKV xvid - no video, just audio......[Solved...finally]
« on: October 18, 2007, 09:31:34 am »

Searching through the board(s) I couldn't find an exact match to the problem I'm having (sure I missed it, so I apologize up front):

anyway, trying to play an mkv file in MC12 (.338) and all I get is the audio, absolutely no video.  This also happens with MPClassic and WMP, so I would think it isn't really an MC12 problem, but is a codec/setting issue.

I have the K-Lite codec pac installed, with all the defaults set (latest version that I am aware of, 3.5).  As part of this overall effort to make this work, I  uninstalled that pac and loaded CCCP, but I couldn't get any video to play after that (a totally separate issue to bring up later I would think), so I uninstalled it and re-installed the K-lite pac.

I can play other video types in MC12 (and MPClassic and WMP for that matter) with no issues.

So, just audio, no video.  MPClassic gives me the information below.  I will be happy to post any other information that may help in getting this to work:

Your best bet for MKV playback (and really most else) is certainly CCCP.  It's the official codec pack for MKV files, and it really works quite well.

However, K-Lite Standard or Basic should both work equally well.  I'd strongly urge you NOT to use the Full or Mega versions of K-Lite though as they can cause problems.  If you were using Standard or Basic and your playback wasn't working with that either, then something else is going on with the system.

As mentioned in the DirectShow Playback Guide on the JRiver Wiki (which is a good place to look for help on MC), CCCP has a wonderful Troubleshooting Guide as part of their FAQ Section.  If you haven't done those steps, that'd be what you need to do.  By far the most common issue is improper installation (failure to remove all old codecs, reboot, and then proceed with the CCCP install).  If you didn't run CCCP Insurgent, and didn't reboot before installing it, then that is likely your issue.

Tried what Glynor suggested.  Didn't work.

Uninstalled K-Lite pac, rebooted, ran CCCP Insurgent - it showed no pacs/codecs installed (but had items in System Classes and Filter columns, I left all that alone), rebooted, ran CCCP install.

Now, as before, no video works.  No matter what video I try (which on my PC right now all seems to be xvid stuff) all I get is the audio, just like with the MKV stuff.

Not sure what to do next without making it worse.

I would like to point out, that before doing all this, when I had the K-Lite pac installed, when I tried to play the MKV file, I did notice I got the Haali splitter icon in my system tray (it didn't give any clues as to why the video didn't work).

When I try and play video now, the only icon in my system tray is the ffdshow audio decoder.

Any help would be greatly appreciated?

Try searching for xvid here.  Here's an example:

thanks for the xvid help, but please remember, that until I installed CCCP (and removed K-Lite), XVIDs played with no problems at all (audio and video).

Now that I've installed CCCP and removed K-Lite - XVIDs behave just like the MKV files - no video, just audio......The problem I was trying to address was MKV not showing video at all (just playing audio), I've just made it worse by troubleshooting (apparently).

Worse case scenario I can go back to K-Lite and just live without viewing the MKV file, can't have all of my video files just stop working......

Are there any small sample files out there of other video types (not xvid or mkv) that I can test to see if they work?

Now this is odd.......

More troubleshooting - I can play mpeg files with no issues in MC12, WMP, Media Player Classic and Zoom player.

Even odder, I downloaded and ran the VLC Media Player and even with all my other issues, it can play the MKV files, as well as the other AVI/Xvid files on my machine....

What the heck is going on here?  Why will the files play in this player, but not in MC12, Media Player Classic, and the Zoom player?

I'd really love to get this video stuff fixed.

I have no idea why:

  • Using the CCCP codec pac I can't play mkv or xvid video of any kind (but audio works fine.  This occurs on all players except the VLC Media Player
  • Using the K-Lite codec pac I can't play mkv files, but can play xvid files of any kind (again, on mkv files, audio works, but no video).

As mentioned earlier, I did run CCCP Insurgent after uninstalling K-Lite (and before installing CCCP) and it appeared to indicate K-Lite had been removed successfully and no other pacs were installed.

Not sure what to do next.

Why will the files play in this player, but not in MC12, Media Player Classic, and the Zoom player?

VLC can play the files because it does all the decoding internally (everything is built into the program). The other players use DirectShow architecture. Since you can not play the files in MC, MPC, Zoom, the problem is with DirectShow filters. Something has messed up the DirectShow filter registration on your system.

I would check FFDShow video decoder settings and make sure it is configured to decode H264.

Yaobing:

thanks.....

Now exactly how do I check that?  Not sure if it entirely came out in the posts, but K-Lite is gone and I am just using CCCP.

If I check the CCCP Settings application, on the first page:

FFDShow Video Decoders - check boxes for DivX, Flash Video, Generic MPEG4, H.264, and Xvid
FFDShow Audio Decoders - check boxes for all types

On the 2nd page:

Haali Media Splitter - check box for show tray icon, enable MPEG-TS, Enable MKV, Enable MP4, and Enable OGG/OGM (all others blank)

VSFilter - all checks blank

In the FFDSHOW Video Decoder configuration application:

What do I check or change?  If I select Codecs, and look at H.264/AVC - decoder is set to Libavcodec, same for Xvid.

My only option seems to be to disable it.

What else is there to check?

thanks

Did you read the whole troubleshooting guide, or just the first steps?  For example, there is this whole section here: http://www.cccp-project.net/wiki/index.php?title=Troubleshooting_Guide#Common_video_problems

Some things that can cause problems:

1. Overlay mode enabled in FFDSHOW in Windows 2003, XP64, or Vista 64.

2. DivX installed and trying to handle playback.

3. WindowBlinds type skin applications.

4. Nero's Parser interfering: http://www.cccp-project.net/wiki/index.php?title=Troubleshooting_Guide#I_randomly_get_no_audio_or_no_video_when_I_play_MP4.27s._Now_what.3F

5. Evil PowerDVD filters: http://www.cccp-project.net/wiki/index.php?title=Troubleshooting_Guide#After_installing_PowerDVD_7_H.264_playback_is_broken.21

If none of that stuff applies or helps, your best bet is to ask on the CCCP IRC Channel.  There's a link at the very top of that troubleshooting page.  If MKVs aren't playing, but XviD AVIs are (when K-Lite is installed), then something is interfering with Haali's splitter.  My guess would be Nero or PowerDVD, but that's just a guess.

Glynor - thanks for hte suggestions/comments

Did go through the entire post you link to at CCCP.  Didn't seem to help.

Overlay Mode - I didn't turn any such mode on, so not sure where it would be or how to undo it, but will check on that.  Don't see such an option in the FFDshow app or with my video card, so I must be missing something...

Do not have DivX installed or WindowsBlinds
Do not have any Nero software installed, so I wouldn't think that is causing an issue
Do not have Evil PowerDVD filters installed, at least to my knowledge.

I have posted this question on the CCCP forum to see if they can help (in reality the question belongs there as it isn't a problem with MC, just posted here first as I prefer MC as my media player, and everyone here is very helpful/knowledgeable).

Regarding your last paragraph - I do notice, even with CCCP installed, when I try and play one of the mkv or xvid files, the Haali splitter icon does show up in my system tray, so it is being loaded, just doesn't look like it is showing any video for some reason...

Solved the problem (finally).

Found this post on the CCCP forums:  http://www.cccp-project.net/smf/index.php?topic=2136.0

Basically, fix was to turn off UAC, reboot, run regservr32 quartz.dll, voila - video for both mkv and xvid worked fine from that point forward.

Assuming that means that somehow quartz.dll didn't get registered properly or somehow got unregistered....

thanks to everyone for helping

Ahhh.... Vista.  Sorry.  Haven't taken that hurtful plunge so I couldn't help you there.  Glad you got it sorted!!
