Unable to obtain license
« on: October 25, 2007, 02:54:43 pm »

Hey,
I have downloaded some protected WMA files. When I try to play them in MC it says that it is unable to obtain license. It is a Windows Media DRM Error. I have run Microsoft update and update various stuff in MC. When I go to advance tools and Windows Media Manager it says I need to update MS digital right management (DRM). I click ok and it updates or something like that. When I go to the same menu again, it asks me to update once again. Now I have locked out myself and I am not able to restore any more today.

Either way, the files playback in WMP nicely.

Does anybody know how one gets MC to obtain this license, or how I can update the DRM manager manually. I need this music for tomorrow night, and I would really prefer to use MC.

Cheers,
Rasmus

Are they "Plays For Sure" WMA files or Zune WMA files?

They are from the Danish library's netmusic. I guess they are standard play for sure files. No mention of Zune at least.
It does, however, not say specifically. The files live on your machine and dies after 14 days. I was told that they are supported on mp3 players too.

Some times it says
"the license for this file requires a higher level of security than the player you are currently using has. Try using a different player or download a newer version of your current player" . . .

Hmmm... That typically means that you need a newer version of WiMP installed.  However, since they work in WiMP that's likely not it.  Just to check... Are you on WiMP 10 or 11?

It's possible that MC can't handle the newest WMA "Protected" files.  I'm not sure at all (I hate DRM and refuse to buy anything DRM protected on general principle)...

UPDATE: Also, just to check... If you go to Windows Update and click the Custom button, and then check under "Software, Optional" is there anything in there Windows Media related at all?

Yes I am playing them back in WMP11 right now. I have run microsoft update to update anything that could have anything to do with DRM. As I also said, MC keeps asking to update the license.
Glynor, I hate DRM too, but you can't beat free! (well some times you can . . .) Either way they are offered free of charge from the libraries.

Thanks,
Rasmus

MC12 does.  It won't play Zune's files.

The service have been around for ages. I doubt they use Zune style WMA. They do not even say anything about Zune on their site. I use the latest MC12.

Yeah, that's why I asked.  Based on limited guestimating what things in Danish mean, it looks like their system only requires WiMP 10, so I don't think it is Zune stuff (and isn't that only URGE right now anyhow?)...

I'm happy to try one for you if you want, but yeah, I'd need some login creds (and I'll make sure not to buy anything by accident).

On a second thought, I am not sure other files I download will be able to play on my computer if you use it. Also the login in my social security number, so I guess it is not so good to send the login.
Can I send a wma file, or will it be no good?

Yeah... Don't send it then!

The WMA wouldn't be any good on my machine, without the appropriate licenses, so that won't work.  I'd really have to get my own I suppose.

So...  Does anyone else use protected WMA?

Sorry I can't be more help!

I tried it on another system and it was the same result. The first time I tried WMP was not installed. Then I tried to reinstall WMP, and it played back instantly without a problem. Then I tried to play it back in MC, but it still was not able to get a license.

MC is definitely able to access the Internet, although I am behind the school’s network, since it downloading podcasts.
