Can't reinstall Media Center 12
« on: November 08, 2007, 08:34:38 pm »

OK Here's the deal...

Windows is installed on Drive C:
Media Center was installed on Drive E:
Drive E: Crashed.  :'(

Now I'm trying to re-install Media Center on Drive C: but the installer fails to create the Media Center directory and ends. I can't uninstall becuase the uninstall program is on Drive E: which is now dead. What do I need to do so that I can install Media Center on my C Drive?

Thanks, LeFreak

Make sure you have the MC12 from the download page here.

Install using the custom option and specify the folder to install to.

Sorry about drive E.

Yup. I'm trying to install Version: 12.0.329 downloaded from this site. I'm selecting custom but when I hit next I get an error dialog box that says: Failed to create Media Center directory. This is followed by the news that the install wizard had a critical error and has to quit. It suggests rebooting and trying again and if that doesn't work to uninstall and re-install. Neither of these solve the problem. The later becuase I can't un-install.

You may have to edit the registry.  Try renaming the MC keys in both Current User and Local Machine.  Here's one:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\JRiver\Media Center 12

I'll give that a try in the morning and let you know.

Yeah. The path for the install directory key was E:\Progra~... so I changed that to C:\ This probably would have done it but just to be safe I changed all the occurrences of E:\ to C:\  under JRiver in both the Local Machine and Current user.

Install went fine after that and all seems to be working. I still have all my preferences and the registration is still intact.

Thanks again, LeFreak

Seems Weird

I Guess A User Should Not Need To Do This, A Bug In The Installer Program?

It's tricky since the Windows registry says that the program is installed to E:\.  The uninstaller was on E:\ so there's no way to uninstall.

The installer could handle this a bit better, but it's tough because without an uninstall, your settings will still point to a missing hard drive.

Yep, I think the key problem with any sort of solution to this would be if MC was installed on an external drive, which has then been removed/ not available. In this instance, you'd probably want to keep the files/ settings on the external drive, and re-start the install when this drive was present, as opposed to installing another clean copy.

My thought would be a sanity check on the existing install path key in the registry. If this path doesn't exist, present the user with two options, IE. 1- Remove all existing MC registry keys and proceed with install, or 2- Terminate install.

I don't know what additional problems this sort of approach would present though, but FWIW I'd imagine most users would rather stay well away from the registry.
