Upgrade License Question

I currently have MC 9. If I upgrade to MC 12 does my MC 9 license expire.
If I wanted to switch back to MC 9 at a later date and apply for an activation code will I get one or will I be stuck with the new version?

Your MC 9 license will still be good.
