Slightly Nervous - Free MJ12 - Could Someone (J River?) Explain
« on: November 27, 2007, 08:14:20 pm »

Please feel free to yell at me for not understanding or being aware, but I just noticed that MJ12 (what appears to be the audio only version) of my favorite and incredible software is free.  Is this new and if so, could someone explain the marketing rationale.  I want MC12 to be developed for many, many more years (for selfish reasons) and would like to understand J Rivers philosophy about what is apparently a free audio version.  I don't object to free if it will help J River to continue to develop MC 12 (and MJ 12) and be happy and able to stay in business.

I'll sure that Jim will be happy to further explain, but think of it this way: it's a bit like the old but brilliant "Giving Away the Razor, Selling the Blades" strategy that Gillette came up with years ago....

It's a good thing ((C) Martha Stewart) for JRiver and MC.

Maybe, but it also maybe something to do with the many players, and contracts\agreements that JRiver signs with music providers.

I am not sure you will get any insight in the inner workings of JRiver, and there business plans now or in the future.

We're going to lose money on each copy, but then make it up on volume ;D

Free MJ12 - What is the difference?
« Reply #5 on: November 27, 2007, 10:28:38 pm »

I have no problem with paying for MC 11 and 12.  I would like to understand how MJ 12 relates to MC 12.  What is missing?

I don't use MC 12 for managing images.  I don't want them in my library with audio files.  Switching libraries seems to kill whatever is playing.  I could use image management but MC 12 doesn't seem to fit my needs.

A slimmer MC with fewer crashes would be a plus for me.  No DirectShow stuff for example.

I converted not so long ago, to using MC for organizing my images as I feel it has got to a point that is suffient, but have mentioned and requested that I hope that MC starts giving image management and editing a higher priority in the near future, so that it can function with the same brilliance it does, with image files as it does with audio files.

With just a few tweaks and functionality, I think can make MC also the the Best image organizer ever.

Thanks,cosmic

I would also like to know the differences between MC12 and MJ12...could you list them somewhere please? I use MC12 solely for music so I'm wondering if MJ12 might offer a more streamlined interface for this purpose.

It's still a bit of a moving target.  It would be best to download it and try it.
