Submitting LP's to YADB ..
« on: December 04, 2007, 05:22:49 am »

I have bought a nice Clearaudio turntable and buy records again. Because I also want to play the songs in my car I will digitalize them.

If I have done that will it make sense to upload the information to YADB. Will it be recognized if the CD version is released of the digitized LP. Or if I have the LP and the CD version is also available, will it work  ?

Most likely a CD release would have slightly different track lenghts and audio fingerprinting so the submitted info would not be usable with a CD release. In addition, the info would end up in the separate "track" database instead of the CD database (unless you first burn an audio CD and rip it).

However, you can submit the info anyway. It may be useful for someone (perhaps for yourself). It would be better to add e.g. (vinyl) in the album name field for keeping the YADB entry separate from possible other versions.

Right click on the tracks and choose "Submit Track Info to YADB".  As Alex said, that puts the information in the track database.  Thanks.

Off course I have no problems in uploading the information.

I only wonder how it can be of use to anyone, even to me. A fingerprint is made of the track, Guess that also depends of the track quality.
If I would have to digitalize the record again then trying to resolve the songs from YADB seems almost impossible to me. I have to manually cut the tracks what can indeed lead to different track durations every time.

Is there some explanation anywhere on how track information is placed in YADB and what is stored. Only out of curiosity, I have no problem with doing it or whatsoever.

It still should work, even if the files are in a different codec or at a different bitrate.

You could try one now to prove it.

What is the best software to convert LPs to CDs.  I have about 100 LPs
and some have never gone to CDs.

MC's recording feature is pretty good if you don't intend to do corrections.

For example, this Hydrogen Audio thread has info about dedicated programs:

Magix's AudioCleaningLab ($50 when I bought it) has served me pretty well for about 5 years and 2000 LPs so far. It has a spectoral view which makes it easy to separate tracks, It also has some cleanup tools.

You might also want to check out "GoldWave" software. It's reasonably priced, relatively easy to use, has many clean-up capabilities, and works very well.
You can download a demo at  - goldwave.com
I've used it for some time now and am very happy with it.
Cheers,

FWIW, the way I've always done this (OTR recordings & some taped audiobooks as opposed to LPs) is to store the tagging etc. in an entirely separate database apart from MC & then back this up to my webserver. If I then need to re-rip something, I can just pull in the information from the database manually.
I appreciate that this is a little more work, but with the way MC & YADB work its the only really viable solution, as a rip of an analog source is going to be slightly different each time. This problem is more apparant with lower quality sources, so your mileage may vary  :)
