Can't connect to Library Server
« on: November 29, 2007, 12:44:37 am »

I'm having some wireless server/client issues with this version. I upgrated to this version only to find out that now I cannot connect to the Media center through the normal server/client establishment. I have two laptops in the house that run the client version and I run the MC server on my main desktop as a server. This has worked for me since JR MC 10!!! Yes I've been a long time user and not a member.
I have turned off all my firewalls and defenders just to make sure those are not the cause of this problem. Anybody else has this problem?

I found out that Skype and MC server are using the same port 80. MC switched to port 81 on auto port selection because Skype loaded earlier. So now Somehow the clients could not connect because they tried, by default, to use port 80. Now, is there a way to get the client to use port 80 along with other programs that are using port 80 like Skype? I need port 80 to stream music across the internet. This is the main reason I have JR MC and I have gotten a lot of people into buying and using this powerful program.
When I manually changed the port on the server back to 80 every thing started working.... But some times it is not possible...
Thanks a lot

(I split this topic off because it's not a bug with Media Center)

Are you using "Search for Library Servers" on the clients? If so, just switch the port on the server and everything should work fine.

If you are not, I'd suggest choosing a fixed port on the server that you know is not in conflict, and then set each client to connect to that port.

Thanks John,
That's how I have it for now, the problem is I didn't have to do this with previous versions. What changed?
My main problem is this:
I'd like to keep my MC on port 80 so I can stream my music from across the internet like I use to be able to. Is there a way to do this using other ports, i.e. 81?
Thanks

What happened? Probably a conflict between Skype and Library Server that you never noticed before. Perhaps you were already running MC when you installed Skype, so Skype chose an alternate port. Then when you rebooted, Skype got in first and got the port.

You can do any port across the Internet, you just have to make sure you don't have a firewall blocking it (and NAT is set up). 80 is convenient because many firewalls allow port 80 by default, but it is not necessary.

I know that the firewall I have at home lets me use different external and internal ports. So lets say I need to use port 80 on the outside due to my workplace's firewall only letting port 80 traffic through. I can set up my firewall to listen on port 80 but then forward it to port 8080 or whatever on the internal side.

Nice thought, but if they are also using Skype, that would prevent Skype from working...

I have 3 computers running version 380, 2 XP machines and 1 Vista laptop.  One of the desktops and the Vista laptop are both missing the 'clear playing now' command from right clicking the list in the playing now screen.  The one that has the command, has the command appearing at the top of the list when right clicking in playing now.
The desktop that is missing the command has two 'remove from list'  commands in the command box and the vista machine has 'paste from clipboard' as the top command in its list.

After doing a bit more checking, it appears whatever command I used from the right click menu in the playing now screen, appears as the top choice the next time I right click in playing now.  Still can't find the 'clear playing now' command...

this functionality was changed a few builds back and there was some discussion about it. You can now find the clear playing now function by right clicking the playing now option in the left pane and not in the playing now list.

It's also in:

Menu > Player > Playing Now

and

View playing now and mouse-over title text that says "Playing Now"

Thanks - I found it.. I also found it by right clicking on the column headers in Playing Now  and looking under 'more commands'.  Not sure why it was changed from the previous command structure - I am sure there was a good reason.

I am sure there was a good reason.
