If I double-click an image , it would be nice to choose for it to open in "Display View" without going to playing now.

exactly. also, what would be nice, i dont know if this already is in place but, to have the panes in the audio/images/video to act differently from one another. so if i have an empty pane in images, but a large pane in audio, i dont have a large empty space in my images section. and if i close that, its closed in the audio section.

There has been a few calls for MC to please start treating audio and image files differently, as they obviously have different requirements.

And another problem, is that if I associate all my image files with MC, and want to double-click it from windows explorer , the display viewer only allows me to view that one image, Unlike if I had to use Windows standard Picture and Fax viewer, it would allow me to browse using the forward and back arrow, every image within the folder of the original image which I double-clicked.
And this is another reason why I no longer want to associate my image files with MC at present. :(

Is JRiver MC taking any note and consideration to the issues some users are having with image files and MC?
Image support needs more attention, or some will stop using MC completely for images, and just resort to using the free Music Jukebox for audio.

I hope it doesn't come to that for me.

Better to browse inside MC, even using the My Computer option, but you can do what you want with a right click and Play in MC.  Turn Shell Integration on in MC Tools/Options/General.

I read about everything here.  I don't see a common problem.  Please point to a thread if you can.

You can do this, but maybe you mean double clicking from Explorer, not from MC.

No. No revolt intended. It's just how it is, image support doesn't seem as important in MC as audio. I love my audio, but the lack of some features for images are frustrating, and as much as I love MC, I'm finding it necesaary to keep looking at other programs. There are other threads I remember reading, a few with similar comments, where MC just isn't cutting it for images ( but I'm not going to go hunting for it right now,Saturday evening - time to chill) , ... but it's obvious that MC needs more image features, but I guess it doesn't seem to be an important issue for those running MC.
'
And yes, many times one does browse outside MC, and needs to view quickly an image file or so.So if I am in a folder with images and double-click on it, it can only show me that one image, not ther rest in the folder (unless I'm actually browsing with MC, which isn't always the case, ... like when I'm working), so associating images with MC seem to not work 100% at the moment.

All I'm saying is I hope that sometime (and hopefully soon) , it'll be realized what many needed features are offered by other "image" organizer , even those that are free, and that if MC wants to be known as a Top image organizer too, it should have a look honestly at it's competitors.

No revolt or disrespect intended(as I do believe MC is an amazing piece of work), just my honest opinion as an MC user who'd like to use one "media center" (MC) for all my audio, video and images.

Thanks

I assure you that this is not a fact.  I regard image support as extremely important.  So does Matt and so do others on the team.

I believe you've suggested improvements to the image editor.  We don't regard image editing as a primary strength, so this is not likely to happen anytime soon.

Anything else you think is lacking?

Please don't confuse lack of image features with features that just work differently than you're accustomed to.  It's not the same.  You may need to adapt a little to the program.

Well besides the image editor ( which it is a pity to hear there will be No improvements anytime soon) , I feel a lot of batch editing like time-stamp , batch converting ( which MC only allows converting of audio files ) ,are an important part of my organizing.

More options for users to how images react within MC, like opening in it's own viewer or not, when double-clicking from windows ( this one example ).

As is Image comparison ability, stacking and version tracking (as mentioned by another user, a new feature to me , but somethin I have found Very helpful) , more image editing controls from fullscreenview (eg. crop etc), as well as from display view. And there are more, but I've said it all before.

Basically it would be nice if MC had a bit of a boost when it comes to images. A little more icing. A little more cool "image" features, so I don't have to look and envy those cool little new features in other organizer.

I agree with this.
When a file is double clicked in explorer, this should let us go to the next and previous easily instantly within MC.
Possibly just make MC open up to that file location inside of its 'my computer' module and start playing it from there so it is easy to keep moving around.

Browsing my computer is something I always do outside of MC - its 10x faster and easier and I have it customised to how I want to browse my computer whereas MC I have customised to how I want to navigate my media.

I really do feel MC could do with alot of extra features to do with images. Right now it does seem very sparce and like its just something it happens to support rather than something that has been thought about and some exciting and ingenious ideas put into it to make it easy, friendly and one step above the rest.

If you really are that dedicated to image support and want to make MC lead the pack then maybe start a thread purely on images and have everyone put their complaints, suggestions and ideas into it and then after its been open a while and full of ideas, look to see what are the most common and supported ideas and implement ones you agree with?

My sentiments exactly, I'm afriad.

I also tried to state that most of my browsing , especially when working is done outside MC, and yes it IS faster and easier.

Johnnyboy obvoiusly feels the same way I do about MC and image support. There are probably many who don't feel or need extra image features , as audio and video might be their main focus.
I'm also sure that there are Many users that don't even use the forum ( not having time or just not into forums), that have no voice , but are out there feeling the same.

Please MC, a little more icing for images.

Cosmic,
Comments like that just are not useful.  You have to be specific to have a chance.  You also need to get others to agree.  Changes often have negative consequences for other people.

Tackle a single issue and see if others agree.

Using MC as just a player from Windows Explorer seems a little old-fashioned, but maybe I don't understand.

Hi Jim.
No offence, but I have in many posts tried to be Very specific. Just adding new features, not taking away, I don't see how it could have any negative consequences for other people.
What I have mentioned is only a wishful request. I think more features for images would only be welcomed. I can't see how it would offend anyone.

With regards to using MC as a viewer from Windows Explorer ( maybe a separate independent quick viewer as some other organizers have done) , it allows me to associate MC with ALL my image files ( the way I'd like it to be) , but with giving it the same ( if not more ) capability than Windows picture and Fax Viewer.

Whoa guys, chill a little.

i dont really care for editing images in MC, thats why i have photoshop, hehehe. i also have over 3000 pics and i think that the windows pic viewer..that comes free and standard on my computer..is a lot better simply because it opens the pic up in its own window, and i can go forward to the next pic, and back to the previous. this is what MC is lacking, and why i dont use it for my pics. media center treats the pics the same as the video and audio, it goes to the playing now. the problem is i like to listen to my music and jump around in my pics at the same time and its waaaaay easier and faster to do it in the windows pic viewer thing.

do what ever with the editing, i dont care, but PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE make it an option to open a pic up in its own display window with the ability to go to the next, and previous pic. thats all.

and maybe some video speed play back options as well. but thats a different thread...

Thats the problem. i dont want the pics to go to playing now. thinking about it, it would work just fine if the pics opened up in its own tab, and from there you can go next and previous pics.
that and in the options, have images options. they are handled the same as audio and video, but they arent used the same way.

I agree that pictures should be handled quite differently from audio and video.

I have tried to use MC for picture browsing, but have found that it's a lot easier to just browse in explorer and use the "picture and fax viewer" (!).

I also don't think MC shouldn't have to contain any editing features, but rather focus on browsing features.

This has turned more into a discussion about MCs image handling :P Should we split the thread perhaps?

I use both Picasa and MC for my images, and photoshop for editing.

Images are an area of huge growth. Digital cameras, cheap storage and quicker internet have made photo storage and sharing incredibly popular. You only need to look at online gallery sites like FlickR and facebook to see this. With a few well thought out changes to image management, I believe MC could be marketed to a whole new audience which never would have looked to MC otherwise.

I think if you are looking at changes to image handling, Picasa is a good target to strive for... it is simple to use, has seamless integration with it's own online gallery and has enough power to handle most types of image libraries. It also has competent and useful image editing features which are seamlessly integrated into the program -- try it, it works a charm. MC has come a long way in image organisation - panes, Pix01 and facebook integration are great drawcards, and more recently the nested panes have made image organisation even more powerful.

So why do I keep going back to Picasa?

MC wins over Picasa hands down for organisation. If I want to find a photo by person, place, or any other field, MC is the way to go. I like having a million fields and use panes to organise images in every conceivable way possible :P But a lot of people don't have massive libraries and wouldn't even think to tag "People" in their photos. These people form the bulk of the market, and use Picasa (or iPhoto) for the following reasons
 - it has a sleek interface (scrolling has a 'bouncy' feel, all the controls you need to "do things" with your images are at your fingertips - there is no need for nutting down through "Library tools" etc etc)
 - it has gimmicky features (like timeline, slideshow, posters and collage): it's things like this which draw in a lot of amateur users - it impressed me when I checked out the website for the first time
 - it has more powerful features like geotagging and integration with google earth/maps (this is an area of growth - cameras capable of geotagging will become more and more popular - "Place" is becoming almost as important as timestamping
 - integration with Google's Picasa Web Galleries is simple and easy to use. The program knows which photos you have uploaded to your online gallery and allows you to edit and add to your online albums.

In my honest opinion, one of MC's original strength is now becoming one of it's major weaknesses - MC was marketed as "the one which plays them all". This is a great concept - a single and familiar interface can be used to navigate all your audio, video and image collection. But as media organisation has become more specialised, I think MC has suffered because of this original strength. In my mind, MC still tops the bar in audio. But there are other pure video and audio programs that outdo MC, because that's all they deal with. MC will win out in organisation -- the two areas where this may not be the case are playback and manipulation

Video is a separate topic altogether and has been discussed elsewhere. Personally I would like to see MC go the way of VLC player and play many video types out of the box without needing Directshow (this alienates the amateur user). This is contentious, however, and I do digress.

PLAYBACK
I am honestly quite happy with the way MC handles image playback currently... I do admit that it is a little slow and clumsy for quickly viewing images from explorer for many of the reasons listed in this thread, but I'm not all that sure how this could be improved without a complete redesign -- MC currently has a single playback option for all media (audio, images and video). There is the option that maybe MC could have a separate image viewing display (with simple buttons like "rotate", "edit", "share" etc easily accessible, similar to Picasa's view)... You'd probably need to do a poll to see what people want in this area.

MANIPULATION
Here is my super list of things which I think would complete MC's image handling.
Keep in mind no single program that I have found can do all of these things, but if MC could do them and do them well it would be unbeatable and attract a new type of user.

EXIF support
--We can read EXIF tags now. This is great, but a fully featured image program should allow us to view the EXIF data (separate from the database "tags"), edit it and save it to the file. While it is good to have a single "Tag Window" for all media types... sometimes I'm not sure if what I'm viewing is from the EXIF tag or MJ tag (without opening up the "Format" field)
--Advanced functions like "Batch EXIF date changing" would be nice (eg adding 2 hours to a bunch of photos to correct for time differences)

"Features"
Let's face it, people like cool new things. Slideshows, timelines, collages etc are great for impressing the amateur user.
--The ability to frame "Faces" in facebook was a huge factor in the networking site's success. This is discussed further below. Does it bother anyone else that you can tag 5 people in a photo, but there is no way to know which person is which??
--The ability to select multiple photos and autocreata a collage or timeline would be a nice feature
--This is getting a bit fancy, but video collages are very popular... pick some music, pick some photos and select a few simple transitions and you're done.

Web Integration

Pix01: I like Pix01. With a bit of love and care it could be something great... there are a few things missing though which always lead me back to Picasa Web Galleries.
-- I think we should be aiming for more integration here. MC should know which photos I've uploaded to my web gallery and I should be able to add to or change photos without replacing the whole album. I know this is hard, but it is important.
-- A bit more customisability to the site itself: allow me to organise my albums (by date, by name, with categories etc etc) and reorder my photos, and allow me to view the tags of the files (ala Picasa)
-- Have an option to share private galleries with other users, and add the ability to comment on photos (ala Picasa)
-- Allow me to "Download Entire Album" (ala Picasa)

Facebook: iPhoto has this sorted - copy them!! In iPhoto you can fill in all the tags from the program and better yet, fill in the "Face" frames before you upload. With the power of it's numerous fields, MC is in a prime position to mirror this or beat it. I want to be able to bring up the photo, bring up the "frame" and select the name from my [People] field. There are open source solutions for this so it's definitely not impossible to do this. Check out: http://code.google.com/p/fb-photo-uploader/ (it's under GNU General Public License)

Picasa: Why not? Complete support for the major web galleries would please everyone

Batch Features
--I would find a "batch convert png to jpeg" feature INCREDIBLY useful. Some people pay for software just to do this (myself included). I should be able to select my conversion settings, size etc. MC audio conversion is fully featured, why shouldn't images get the same treatment?

Editing
Do yourself a favour, download Picasa and double click on an image. A very simple and user friendly menu comes up with Basic Fixes (Crop, Straighten, Red Eye, Contrast, Colour), Tuning (Lights and Shadows) and Effects (B&W, Sepia etc etc). This is all I expect from a simple image editor. Anything more and I will use photoshop.
--The key is integration. Don't use a separate editor I have to open up. And make sure that my output file retains all the tag information when I save it!!
--I love the lossless image rotation in MC. Simple lossless editing will make the program more functional and stop users from turning to other image solutions.

Geotagging and Map Integration
This isn't that important yet but it is getting there. The idea of viewing a "Map" of your photos is very appealing. I know there was some recent geotagging implementation in MC but I must confess I haven't tried it yet. Picasa is the only program I'm aware of that supports this well - it is well integrated with Google Earth and Google Maps.

Long post, sorry

In MC, a mixed playlist of music and photos does something very similar.  You can even add a video.

Any Pix01 upload you do creates a new entry under "Pix01 Playlists".  You can drag it to "Share to Web".  Yes, it uploads the entire list again, but the album html is built on the client side, so it's necessary.

I'd like some of these, too.

You can share a private gallery.  It just isn't visible unless you know the address.  Comments would be nice.

Good idea.  Check the MC Camera's ability to get images from a web page.  It may work.

We've talked with them briefly.  They weren't interested.  Google tends to be a bit aloof.

Not at all.  Thanks for the thoughts.   Please understand that we play in a very big world and we have to choose our battles.

It's frankly flattering that you would compare our image handling to Picassa's.  I think it says we're doing the right thing.

How's Picassa's video playback?   ;)

I think the organization of complex media libraries is what mc does best. (Or that is what it seems to me as I just bought it this weekend ;) ) Because of its complexity it will never be able to compete with the likes of Picasa and Iphoto in terms of ease of use, gimmicks, etc. I think therefore the best niche for mc is the more experienced user with large media libraries.

all im looking for is a function to

open pic in new tab, and have two little buttons within that tab that lets me go the the next pic, and the previous pic.

that should be pretty easy to make. all that editing stuff, i do that in photoshop. but when im bored and listening to music and browsing my pics, not to easy in MC. so please, can you guys make an option that lets me

open pic in new tab, and have two little buttons within that tab that lets me go the the next pic, and the previous pic.

Thanks Jim for the feedback

Soulcancer, sorry if I kinda hijacked your thread! :)
It looks like you got an answer (of sorts):

There is the option that maybe MC could have a separate image viewing display (with simple buttons like "rotate", "edit", "share" next and previous etc easily accessible, similar to Picasa's view)... You'd probably need to do a poll to see what people want in this area.

May be a good idea for the future.

I believe recent versions also write EXIF tags.
How far has this been developed? I just changed the date of a file from within MC, but the EXIF tag still reports the old date.

I assume you know that MC has an image editor.  It needs some work.
Yes I know :P Last time I used it I discovered I lost all my tag information by editing the file. Has this changed?

Baby steps! A little bit here and there makes a big difference :)

How's Picassa's video playback?   Wink
Terrible. Absolutely terrible.

ok, the paladins were up late last night shooting, so i couldnt sleep. so i did this.
i know this is a lot, but i had some time on my hands. this, i think would be the perfect layout for the images Part of MC. maybe like, in MC13 or something....

http://www.pix01.com/gallery/A99F1414-B0F7-436C-A357-9DFE109A1CC0/mc13/

ok, its kinda small but let me tell you a little about it.

1.  this is how i would like the pane section to be most like. the one thats in adobe photo album i think is the best way to tag pics. it has the ability (i dont know if MC can, i havent figured it out if it does) to have groups, and sub groups like places-countries-states stuff like that. so it opens up downward. MC, so far that i know, cant really do that. and it doesnt have anything to do with the video and audio panes. what i change in the audio pane, doesnt change in the audio pane. i hate that.

2.  behavior of images. like 'jump on play' and 'double click'. i dont want my music or videos to jump to playing now, but i do with my pics.

3.  an 'UPDATE ORDER' button in the action window. that doesnt really have anything to do with the pics, but like i said, i couldnt sleep and really want that.

4. The 'IMAGE VIEWER'  its a whole lot like the windows pic and fax viewer. but more of a mix between that and the image editor window. you can go to the next and previous pic. it also has nothing to do with the playing now. this is solely for viewing and editing pics.

5. the 'Image Viewer' options section. this lets you add buttons to the image viewer, like rotate, crop, next, and previous, shuffle, etc. it also sets up how it opens. full screen, new window, etc. all the behaviors and options of that window.

aaaaaaand there you go. what i think would make it perfect for images.
but again, this is a lot, and is just a wish list.

Hey Soulcancer

I have to point out that I feel similar with ALL what you mentioned, but especially relating to MC's "Image Viewer" being more like Windows picture and fax viewer. Although I have a few other requests regarding images, maybe you'd like to check out my post (especially #1) in ...

a few more things would be nice=

when i plug in my digital cam, and it says to acquire images. i would like if i had the option to rename images like "palau vacation" +001. so if i have a bunch of images, i dont have to go back and rename all of them.
also, have a batch RAW conversion to JPEG option on acquire images. but not have it save both types. only the jpg converted type.
that would be nice.

im trying to get away from adobe photoshop album and go solely to MC with my pics. but adobe still has some little important features that MC is lacking. namely, those two.

i hear ya cosmic, got some good ideas there!
