Will there be a build 400?--stay tuned
« on: December 19, 2007, 07:01:38 pm »

We're trying really really hard to push out a build that is as bug-free as possible.   So the last few builds have been released earlier than usual, and had less certainty attached.

That said, I think this one is the one.  Probably.

On the other hand, build 400 was the magic number for Media Jukebox 8.0.  It stood the test of time for almost half a decade.

We appreciate your patience.

At this rate you guys will be able to do your Christmas shopping before the evening of the 24th, and take a nice relaxing holiday break without having to worry about us.

Your impressive efforts over the last couple weeks have not gone unnoticed. Thanks and have a great Christmas.

Two family members here are getting EEEs for Christmas and I'm looking forward to loading them up with the latest and greatest.  Almost 400 versions.  Hard to believe.

I like logging on and constantly seeing new versions!  I really enjoy reading what you've been up to the past day or so!

My review of MC 12:

***** - Features
***** - Speed
****   - Stability
****   - Usability
****   - Aesthetics
***     - Bugs Fixes
***     - Documentation
***     - Third party development

So really nothing is bad about MC and almost every aspect of it is a joy to use.

Sorry but I think MC is a lot deeper than stars.  And do 3 stars for bugs mean good or bad?  Is it good that MC has bugs?  But they are fixed in a day or two so doesn't that change things?  I need to try this latest version and see how the speed ups are.

Ok, so how would you give your overall feedback on this version?

As far as bugs, I would think it's fairly obvious that bugs are not good, but every software program has them, no matter how hard you squash them (it is impossible to code for every possible situation, we just can't do it) and MC's bugs are pretty under control, but not totally out of out of sight.

Stability get's the 5 stars for me.  I never have any problems anymore
where as I used to have a lot of problems with MC11.

Overall I'm loving MC12  ;D

Great program, great stabilty, great almost everything except one thing: The "Playing now" still isn't at the top of the tree where it logically should be! ;) Congratulations on the best and most open development cycle that any commercial, closed source program can have! None above, a few at the side (Promixis comes to mind...), and the rest left behind in the dust!

I have forgiven JRiver after I got used to pressing the Playing Now button on the top toolbar.
Have you added it there?

Yeah, but I still prefer the old way. Not to mention that I hate the three small view scheme buttons at the top.

They are very fortunate.  They also show good judgement.

Sorry if it sounds greedy but what happen to people who just bought MC12?

Last time some provisions were made to help out people like that (free upgrade if purchased after said date)...  However, I wouldn't count on MC13 becoming "public" anytime soon.  The usual routine has been:

1) They take some well-deserved rest for a week or so.  (You know, go out and get drunk.  Celebrate.  Hang out with the kids.  The usual.)

2) They secretly develop some internal-only builds, whilst we sit and lick our chops.  During this time they continue to improve the old version, but in bug-fix-only-mode (no new features, critical bugs only generally).

3) After the internal builds start to show some real results, they'll probably eventually open it to the Beta Team.  If MC12 was any guide, these initial builds will probably be quite ugly (and completely inappropriate for everyday use).  We'll help them by testing them, but will keep using MC12 for everyday purposes.

4) After those initial builds "calm down" a bit and stop erasing your library, crashing your computer, or killing your dog  (or deleting your files en masse -- remember the FLAC bug in the initial MC12 builds anyone?) they'll probably throw a build or two out to the public.  If I remember correctly, they let these work with your old license for a while.

5) At some point (when it comes to JimH in a dream, maybe?) they'll announce the new version, and then it'll be open for sale.  Upgrade pricing will quite likely be available.  And, perhaps (if MC12 is any guide) they'll also "grandfather in" people who bought MC12 in the last month or so.  We're probably still quite some time from this day...

But... Who knows!?!  The one thing I've learned to be sure of with this JRiver crew is that they're quite likely to surprise me when I least expect it.  The one thing I do know is... It's gonna get better from here on out.   ;)

@JimHYou mean they deserve a free upgrade? That's very generous of you, JimH, thanks for this present!

@glynor: thanks for this detailed answer!

Glynor, you mean any of them have time to keep a family? I'm disappointed! That must be why the builds aren't coming any faster! ;D

I know... I mean, come on.  Only one build per weekday??!?  I think we should see at least two or three (with four or five on Mondays).   ;D

JimH, et al, congratulations, she's a beaut!  IMO, based on the incredible array of new features in 12.x, I think you're as good as up to version 20 by now.  That's 7 new version x $45 that I owe you--check's in the mail!

Echoing benn here, I have never seen feature development on a par with the J River crew.  MC 12 has so much really cool new stuff in it that words fail me (you heard it here first).

bring on 13!!

Who said MC13?  Did I miss something?  Are we moving to MC13?

If I recall correctly, MC 12 brought lots of initial improvements to spark upgrades and then just continued weekday development on a schedule.  I'm ready to upgrade, though!

Here it is -> Media Center 13 Premium Edition

Nice summary, glynor.

I got in as MC11 was just jumping off a cliff...  In other words, MC 12 was JUST starting to be considered as I discovered MC.  I knew there was a chance I might be buying right before the next version but MC was too amazing to wait.
