[Feature request] Horizontal mouse-scrolling
« on: January 14, 2008, 05:15:41 pm »

Would it be possible to enable horizontal scrolling with mouse in MC? I have Logitech MX1000 Laser (for quite a long time already) which enables not only ordinary scrolling (up/down) but also left/right (the wheel can be pushed left or right). This is very handy, many applications do support it and therefore I use it all the time.
http://www.logitech.com/index.cfm/mice_pointers/mice/devices/783&cl=roeu,en

Every time I in MC need to scroll right (in main window - many columns to see) I always think "wouldn't it be great if..." and finally I decided to write it down so here you are  :)

Nope.  I'm a big fan of this idea (and I've posted about it a bunch of times).

For whatever reason it doesn't work in MC.  I hope they fix it.

I also have MX1000 and would really like this added to MC.

The JRiver list / tree control responds to WM_MOUSEHWHEEL, but we haven't found any mice to actually send us this message, even with Vista.

Sometimes the driver / software simulates other scroll methods, but my understanding was that handling WM_MOUSEHWHEEL was the right way to go.

I set my wheel for keyboard shortcuts, left & right, which works to achieve horizontal scrolling in Firefox but MC just doesn't respond to any type of keyboard or scroll command to move left or right.

You can hover over the bar and scroll right, which i prefer because I can't live without cut/paste being mapped to left/right of the wheel mouse (great for editing tags in Mc and general OS use). Recently, however, this behavior has changed where now the scrolling goes both down and horizontal simultaneously; never saw that behavior until the last few builds.

I don't even have any drivers installed (just whatever Windows loads by default) and side-scrolling works with almost every application on the system except for MC.  Windows Explorer, Firefox, IE, Photoshop, Thunderbird, Notepad, and all kinds of other stuff.  Even some really old applications that I know haven't been updated since before there were side-scrolling mice work, so there's something else going on...

Are you on XP or Vista?

Heheh.... What do you think I'm using?   ;)

XP Pro FTW.

Vista might be ready in 6-12 months.  Probably not before for me.  Gotta let them age a bit.

In changelog for build 429 is written this:

12.0.429 (2/6/2008)

1. NEW: Horizontal mouse wheels will work if the system or driver forwards the standard horizontal scroll message.

I installed 12.0.432 nevertheless my Logitech MX1000 still does not scroll left / right although in other applications it does...
Anyone has noticed any change since version 12.0.429? What I need to do in order to make my mouse work in MC?

We are only responding to the new, standard WM_MOUSEHWHEEL message.

If your mouse driver does not send this (i.e. tries to do special case handling), the horizontal wheel will not work.

It might be worth talking to Logitech since a clear standard now exists.

Try uninstalling the Mouse software.

Try uninstalling the Mouse software.

I tried - and then left / right scroll stopped working completely in all applications.
So I downloaded the latest drivers (SetPoint 4.4) and what a surprise! MC apparently recieves the commands from my MX1000 and I finally scroll left / right!
Good work JRiver  :)

Hi Johnny B,

Thanks for the tip.

I was under the impression that SetPoint was for Microsoft keyboards. Can you confirm your final configuration? Did you leave the Logitech drivers installed with SetPoint, or did you replace the Logitech drivers with SetPoint?

or to put it more correctly, MC was listening for the correct, standard mousing data and your older, outdated driver was at fault.........

And SetPoint is a Logitech product and it's revision level is approaching v5.0 for some products.

MSFT drivers are 'IntelliType' and 'IntelliPoint'.  Both are at the 6.1 and 6.2 version level depending on your OS.

Well I would not be so sure about this - the truth is I don't know what version of SetPoint I was actually using recently (before I un-installed it) BUT the auto-update function was enabled and working (e.g. from time to time downloading something saying "drivers had been updated")...
Anyway it's working now  :)

I can confirm  :) As newsposter already mentioned SetPoint is for Logitech only and indeed combination of MX1000 + SetPoint 4.40.88 + MC 12.0.438 works (at least for me)

This was a great tip, thanks!

Funny how the mind jumps to conclusions. When you said SetPoint 4.4 I assumed it was not Logitech because I have been using the auto-update feature for the last 18 months and it always told me there was no update for my 3.x version. I never thought to go to the Logitech site to see if there was something newer.

Thanks again.
