While you're playing the video, try up and down arrows on the keyboard to get the on-screen display.

If the movie is in english maybe have subtitles in other languages.

Subtitles can be displayed in two ways. If the subtitles are already contained in a media file (mp4, mkv, etc.), you can display them using the method mentioned by Jim, i.e. by pressing up or down arrows to get to Stream Selection menu, and use left or right arrow to select a stream. You can also use right-click context menu to show the Stream Selection submenu. If you do not see the "Stream Selection" menu, the file either does not contain any selectable streams,  or contains them in format that is not supported by MC.

Another way to show subtitles is to use external subtitle files and DirectSubVob filter for displaying it. MC support this type too.

Push up or down arrow one more time to see if another stream selection is available, if it is, use left or right arrow to select it.

Normally, the layout of stream selection is like this:

Stream 0: Video
Stream 1: Audio: English
Stream 2: Audio: Spanish
...
...
Stream 7: Subtitle: English
Stream 8: Subtitle: Spanish
Stream 9: Subtitle: Disabled

(... ... represent additional audio or subtitle streams).

Pushing up or down arrow would cycle through these selections.
