Crash playing Videos
« on: February 09, 2008, 01:24:10 pm »

1 Note in advance: MC is running quite long time stable, so this crashes are not nasty. Anyhow I want to document them in case I somehow find the cause of it ...

Crash again: playing an avi file, nearly at the end when pressing stop MC crashed:

Please continue to use this thread.

I think I've said before that this seems like a bad DirectShow filter.

You need to find out which filters are in use for the filetype you're playing.  AVI isn't the file type.  It's a container.

While playing, right click to find out what DirectShow filters are in use.  Try changing them.  Try google for problems with them.

Sorry, maybe I've overseen this suggestion ...

Yes, there was "Stream Buffering" and "MC Bitrate monitor" selected - I disabled them.

thx

Again, crash. This time not avi but during DVD playback. Have you thought about that it's not the video playback but kind of MC background thread?
I havn't updated any of my codecs since 1/2 a year ... well, maybe this log gives you a hint:

Please email the full log to yaobing at jriver dot com next crash.  This chunk isn't showing a crash, but it's possible a background thread failed earlier in the log.

Thanks.

Thanks for the log file.

It, however, does not provide any clues.  It shows the following:

1. DVD graph built and run.

2. Your video card does not support video proc amp in VMR9. Thus MC could not adjust color controls. Nothing could have caused a crash here.

3. A few successful thumbnail building activities for AVI files.

4. A couple of windows resizings.

5. The bottom half of the log shows repetitious logging of the DVD filter sending time-codes to MC.

The crash is not registered in the log at all. The log ended abruptly .

Let us know when it crashes again. In your last log, there was nothing else going on during the last 10 minutes or so except the time-code messages. It is therefore less likely that a background thread caused the crash, although it is not impossible. It could also be caused by a faulty video decoder, or video card driver.

Sorry, I still can not figure out anything from the logs. You last one shows that you issued a Stop command as soon as you started playing a wmv file. That is the only thing "unusual".

Is there a thing I can do get the crashes tracked down?

Hi there. I have seen problems like this myself on numerous occasions and each time, it was found to be the result of a bad directshow filter. For instance, a couple of months ago I was seeing crashes when stopping DVD playback. It then occured to me that a few days earlier, I had installed some "special" decoders when experimenting with some other media filetypes. Even though these decoders weren't explicity selected in the DVD filter list. I unistalled them and the problem went away.

So, my advice would be uninstall ALL filters/decoders and re-install them one-by-one. Carefully monitor their progress and only install the ones you absolutely need. DirectShow can get very messy so the less "clutter" the better IMO. Even if you're confident that nothing's changed, it's probably still going to be a worthwhile exercise for you as I'm sure the problems you're having are not going to go away on their own.

Cheers.

Reread your last log. It seems to be missing many lines. Did you edit out some in-between lines? If you still have the log file, please email it to me.

raym's suggestion is a good one.

Thanks for the full log files.

I found a couple of things that may be related to your crashes.

There is a bug in my code that can cause an access violation when starting to play a video file. It does not cause crashes directly since it is caught and handled by our exception handling.  It could, however, cause problems if you continuously play file after file.  This one is fixed for the next build.

However, considering that you get crashes in DVD as well as video, there must be other causes.

One thing I notice in your log files is a failure to obtain an interface for video color adjustment.

Code: [Select]
0772703: 6060: Playback: CStoreVideoProcAmp::GetValuesFromVMR9: GetValuesFromVMR9: GetProcAmpControl returned 80040299. Flags 0
This seems to suggest that there is indeed something wrong with your DirectShow system. You are not able to access VMR9's color control.

You should first try raym's suggestion of cleaning up unneeded filters. You may need to reinstall DirectShow. Do a search on the forum on "DirectShow reinstallation" or "reinstall DirectShow", especially posts by glynor.

Another thing I should have mentioned:

You are using a version of FFDShow that seems to be quite old. I suggest you uninstall that and, after cleaning out other filters, install CCCP.
