Can't build video thumbs for many Xvid, Mjpeg, Divx....
« on: February 16, 2008, 07:12:29 am »

I have many of these file types with thumbs, generated in the past, but now I can't get MC to work with FFDshow. After a recent library restore many were rebuilt but a ton are not. I also can not get MC to use a screenshot for thumbnail. p

Any ideas?

thanks

I manually set the directshow options in MC for AVI & DivX to use FFDshow decoder and the result was that I finally saw thumbs get generated for mjpeg and divX but then it stopped working. I tried to manually update thumbs and maybe 20 were built.

The mjpeg files are made with a Canon camera and MC has been able to build thumbs in the past.

Thumbnailing code has not changed for months. I do not know what to suggest.

Installation of third-party software/filters sometimes can cause instability in DirectShow. Has anything changed on your system?

I'm at a loss....I've been able to build some thumbs but very slowly.

1.   I've started at the beginning, and removed my thumbnail folder to start over.
2.   I try to build thumbs in Options and when copmplete I still have thumbs start building when I switch into Video.
3.   I just observed a crash while MC was building video thumbs (first time during this 3 day process).
4.   I can play back all the various Xvid & Divx files via ffdshow, but it seems that until I deleted the thumbnail cache, certain files wouldn't have thumbs built for them. For example, I have mjpeg .avi files made by my canon camera. Many of the old movies had thumbs, made in the past, and newer movies simply won’t have thumbs built, yet I can play them with or without FFDshow installed.
5.   One instance of JRworker is running annd my system becomes unusable (this with a stress testesed & statable quad-core). Cpu usage ranges bobs up & down between 10-40%.
6.   I have removed Quicktiime and tried a few different builds of FFDSHOW. I have the newest CCCP installed as well.
7. I noticed that quartz.dll seems to be what ffdshow usesto complete the  filter chain, so I manually set the filters in MC for avi and divx, but I can't be sure if this or deleting the old thumbnail cache is what helped; eother why I'm pretty sure I have a serious problem here.

Here is the log from the crash ((looks like the play/stop/thumbgrab is working but something USB related caused the crash?):

Are the video files that aren't getting thumbnails also not showing attributes like duration, dimensions, bitrate, etc?

Actually, it's the opposite. I have the same exact AVI 1.0 44kHz video file, mjpeg...some have thumbs some don't; the ones that don't, DO have duration and dimensions, ironically.

I uninstalled FFDshow & CCCP and re-installed using CCCP & its provide version of FFDshow.

Suddenly, almost all my mjepg files have thumbs, but about 10 don't and MC (or ffdshow) can't seem to deal with them....my cpu is crunching but no thumbs......

If MC is used to build thumbs (in Options) it completes and yet MC still has to build thumbs for video files by starting playback & doing a screengrab etc.

Right now, I found this to be be a big hit on performance hence the need/want to run it overnight via Options. But this doesn't work so I have taken to tagging most video files with external cover art.

Maybe I have some corrupt avi files or something; I can however successfully playback all video files 3000+ on my PC with MC so I'm inclined to believe a problem exists in the interaction between ffdshow and mc; whether it's specific to my rig or not, I'm experiencing major issues. As I noted earlier, I suddenly saw mjpg files build thumbs at an alarmingly fast rate and yet Xvid files of similar size, successfully build thumbs, at a crawl.

As noted by many, if you enable systray thumbsnails for ffdshow they don't unload properly, so I'm suspicious even though its been argued this doesn't affect anything adversly.

Maybe I need to add more exclusions to my A/V software..who knows, at this point, I don't have the time to spare messing around with this craziness.

Try reading glynor's posts on divx.  And his DirectShow entry on our wiki.  I believe you only need the CCCP set of DirectShow filters and not the Divx software.

Try thumbnailing a single file type at a time.  AVI is a container format so it could have multiple filetypes.

Yes, the new CCCP has a new version of FFDshow included, and I have long since removed the specific DivX and Xvid codecs. I feel like I have cleaned things up with this new XP install; I've avoided any excessive codec packs and the like.

I had my thumbs wiped because I was trying to use a non-standard library location and an update to .438 pointed MC back to my old, default folder. Regardless, maybe the problem is in trying to build too many at once and the filter is getting overloaded. Since I couldn't get the Options method for building thumbs to work, I would use a view scheme with Name. As you can imagine this was a lot of files/thumbs, maybe just too much (various filetypes & containers) to throw at the filter?

Now that I have things under control, I'll try what you suggested and build similar filetypes.

thanks

We do not throw a thousand files to FFDShow at a time. Only four simultaneously. On occasions when a file fails, we have to kill the process (that builds thumb for that particular file). That could leave FFDShow icon in the system tray.

I see LOTS of FFDshow icons in my systray ;D

If I had Divx files that wouldn't build thumbs in MC, but can play them back via FFDshow....does that mean anything? I'm unclear as to why MC can't start/pause/grab for these, but I can do it manually. Same with the mjpeg files. I manually set some directshow settings in MC and suddenly could do a screen grab manually for these files whereas previously it wouldn't work; the same files still wouldn't get thumbs generated auto by MC.

Did you read glynor's wiki article?

I believe that the version of ffmpeg may matter.

"FFDShow is a Multi-Format Decoder filter with major Post Processing capabilities. It is essentially a windows DirectShow Filter version of the FFMPEG Codec Project libraries, which are used to support MPEG-2/4 video and audio decoding by many non-DirectShow, cross-platform, applications (such as VLC). Installing FFDSHOW on your system gives you all the power of the FFMPEG codecs in all of the DirectShow player applications installed on your system (including MC of course)! Starting with MC 12.0.266, MC now supports using FFDSHOW as a post processing filter for DVD and TV Tuner playback, which provides some very exciting possibilities.

"Old Official Builds: A fairly stable but older version can be found here (ffdshow-20051129.exe) This build was last updated in November 2005. It works, but it doesn't contain many of the new and cool features available in more recent builds. I have also experienced some issues with this version of FFDSHOW and MC's thumbnail building routines (though that was with a much older build of MC12 so I can't be sure of the exact root cause)."

I'm using a rather new version attached to CCCP's new version.

Where is Glynor anyway; hasn't been around for weeks...
