Can't access CDDB server or check for updates?
« on: August 04, 2002, 06:44:58 am »

I must have some settings wrong because I have these two problems.  Everything had been working fine, but now, I have two problems …

Whenever I click on “check for updates” I get this message:

“Failed to connect to a server”

And more importantly, whenever I try to acquire CDDB info I get this message:

“CDDB server can’t be found (82fa008)”

I think I have an open connection to the internet via AT&T Broadband.  I do have a LinkSys router, but I don’t have any other firewall installed.  I am running Media JukeBox version number 8.0.336.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

If You Have A Proxy Enter The Proxy Info In Internet Explorer In The CDDB Setup.

Your Router Maybe Blocking.

Or

If You Have Windows XP, Make Sure The Windows XP Firewall Is Turned Off.

I'm not a proxy user.  The only devices on my network are this PC and my Xbox (which I have yet to use on-line yet).

I have Windows ME (not XP).

Nothing about my router has changed as far as I know.

I checked my setting in CCDB setup and it wont hold my password, but when I type it in and click "update" it once again says "cant find server."  I *can* access on-line sites from MJ, but nothing about CDDB.

Anything else I can check?

Problems still existed as of last night (I'm now at work and haven't had time to check this morning, but I expect they still exist now).

CDDB had some problems over the weekend, but I just tried them and connected without a problem. Is "check for updates" failing when you
click "help->check for updates" or after you choose a package to update?

Thanks,

"CDDB had some problems over the weekend"

It always makes me feel more comfortable knowing that it wasn't me who was doing something wrong, so I hope that was my problem!

"I just tried them and connected without a problem"

Good ... even better news!

"Is check for updates failing when you click:
help->check for updates
or after you choose a package to update?"

I already had the most recent update ... I just wanted to see which functions were working and which were not, so I clicked:
help->check for updates
even though I already knew there were no new updates available ... maybe that always happens if you already have the most recent version?

So unless anyone else has any suggestions, it looks like I need to try again tonight (with a very popular CD just to make sure) and report my results here.  Maybe I don't have a problem after all?

For CDDB this is true, for the check for updates, I'm not so sure. Let me know...

Why would it say, "CDDB server can't be found?"

For a day or so, my problem went away, but as of right now, the problem is back.  In other threads, people asked me to post the following info in order to better assist me:

Just bumping this message because the problem still exists and I see others have the same problems with the "can not access server" message popping up every time MJ attempts to access the internet.

Hi Rick,

Send me an e-mail at gateley @ jriver.com, I'll be checking into this sometime tomorrow. If you can help me debug this (try debugging versions) I'd appreciate it.

Thanks,

j

Ahhh!  I shouldn't have downloaded the most recent version ... not I can't even rip a CD to MP3 at all, even if I try to enter in the CD info by hand!  It said something about "ASPI not found" ... but I can't get the exact message to come back.  Now I am really frustrated!!!
