Delete on Sync Problem
« on: March 29, 2008, 10:37:45 pm »

I just bought a Creative Zen, after getting a good deal on a sansa E250.

It was a great purchase, and it's a much better player than the sansa.  I love the Zen, sound quality is great, and the interface is superb.  Picture quality is also great.

I have one problem though... Everything syncs great, with MC12.0.462;  however, if I check the option to remove files not in sync list, then media center will sync the entire list again every time.  Is there any way to correct this.  For now, I just leave this option unchecked, and plan to enable it from time to time, to clean up playlists and podcasts Which currently takes about 20 minutes (will only become longer though).

Is there a fix for this, with the zen?

Noticed, that I am getting duplicates on my Zen, with not deleting content not in playlist.

What Creative Zen do you have?
What USB mode are you using (MTP or MSC)?
Are you syncing a Smartlist?
Also, please make sure you are running the latest version of MC.

I am using a Zen 16Gb which I believe only allows MTP access mode.   I am syncing smartlist, but have the same problem with regular playlists as well.  I am running MC 12.0.462.

Thanks for your help,

Please sync a small playlist, then click Recheck Sync and email me your log files.

You can turn on logging by going to Help > Logging, and turn on logging to a file. If logging is already on, reset the log file, make sure only Handheld events are logged. Do the sync and recheck sync, go back into the logging dialog and email me (rick at jriver dot com) the logs.

Also, Creative has called every device they've made in 5+ years a Zen. Can you describe which model you have in a little more detail?

I'm seeing the same problem with MC 12.0.497 and my Creative Zen 16GB (see http://us.creative.com/products/product.asp?category=213&subcategory=214&product=16999), but only if I also check "Get play stats from handheld on connect". If I clear the "Get play..." option and only have "Delete from handheld any file not in sync list" checked and select "Rechec Sync" it works fine again.

Thanks

I just noticed a similar issue with my 160GB iPod Classic.  I reported this in the 504 thread in the beta forum, but I thought this problem might be related to this thread.

Basically, MC appears to be ignoring the "Delete files not in sync list" option.  Files that are no longer in the list are not deleted when I re-sync.  If I manually delete these files from the iPod, MC will not try to put them back on when I re-sync, but MC will not delete them on it's own as it's supposed to.

In my case, the other iPod settings don't effect this issue.

Thanks,

Larry

I've been noticing this as well.  I'm pretty sure it existed before .504, but it is a relatively new glitch.  Nothing is deleted from the iPod, even when "delete files not in sync list" is checked.

I have the same problem on my Ipod nano 3rd Gen, and it's new from 12.504. The previous public release did delete on sync.

+1

I have an 80GB Classic, to which I sync a smartlist which includes ratings 0 and 2-5.  I rate the unrated songs as they play on the iPod, and expect any that I rate as 1 star to get removed next time I sync.

It hasn't been working as I intended, and I was beginning to wonder what I was doing wrong, but this thread seems to suggest it's the problem is not with my process, but rather with MC.  I'm running version 504.

I have a Sansa clip.  I seem to be having a similar problem.  When I try to sync the device, it either wants to resync the entire device or it wants to sync approximately 20 songs and leave a lot of space available e.g. puts 20 songs on sansa clip and then leaves 3.5 gigs available on a 4 gig device.  It was syncing nicely for awhile but hasn't done it consistently right over the past few days (I don't recall upgrading to the latest version of MC 12). Using 12.0.487.

This was fixed in MC 12.0.506. Please update to the version 12.0.510 when it is posted.

Just noticed this prob with my Rio Karma... It was OK about a month ago.. Installed 12.0.510 - still no delete - MC just shows "On Device" despite the fact that some titles are not in sync playlist...

510 doesn't seem to be deleting video files not on the sync list.  :(

UPDATE: Am checking this again, carefully. Did a "database compression" and a number of files were deleted on the iPod. Am resyncing and will see what happens.

MC will only delete files that are located in the folders (and sub folders) listed in the paths in Handheld options. So if the path is \Music\[Artist]\[Album] it will remove any files not in the sync found in subfolders of Music but it won't delete any files not found in the sync in \Audio\etc\etc. Does this explain your situation or is something else going on?

I don't know what Karma's file structure is...
I'll look into it...
Thanks!

Here's what I found:
Quote
Lkarmafs implements a fixed directory structure based on the RK file
properties, most of which are extracted from the id3 tags of the tune
files.  In this release, the directory hierarchy is as follows:

   mountDirectory/
   |-- playlist/
   |   |-- PlayList1
   |   |-- PlayList2
   |   |...
   |
   |-- taxi/
   |   |-- file1
   |   |-- file2
   |   |...
   |
   `-- tune/
       |-- Genre1/
       |   |-- Artist1/
       |   |   |-- Source1/ (album)
       |   |   |   |-- Title1 (track)
       |   |   |   |-- Title2
       |   |   |   |...
       |   |   |
       |   |   |-- Source2/
       |   |   |...
       |   |
       |   |-- Artist2/
       |   |...
       |
       |-- Genre2/
       |...

In addition, each tune file is shown with a suffix determined from
its "codec" property (.flac, .mp3, .ogg, etc.).  The Genre level under
"tune" can be optionally disabled with a mount option.  Missing property
values needed for path formation are substitued by a dummy name.
Future releases may implement a more flexible scheme, where the whole
directory structure is decided by the user through a mount option
specifying which properties are assigned to each level of the hierarchy.

OK.. I think, I got it!
The path was "music\[Artist]\[Album]"
I changed it to "Rio Karma\" and now it shows "Delete on Sync" in the list.. Lets see if it actually deletes..
Thank you so much for pointing me in the right direction!

It works! Thanks again!
(One little quirk... after MC deleted the titles not on the sync list, I clicked recheck sync and the deleted files appeared in the Karma list again! but they were actually gone! disconnect/reconnect removed those from the list. not a big deal - I can live with this. Finally I can sync.. phew...)

Posted this on the MC12 board also -- apologies for cross posts.

Am still not having much luck with the "Delete on Sync" for video files, running MC510 and iPod Classic (160GB). Made some changes to video tags and re-synched. All files with changed tags (I didn't rename any) were uploaded again to the iPod, but the original files were listed as "On Device" and not "Delete on Sync" as one might expect.

I apologize in advance for asking the obvious but "Delete on Sync" is checked in options right?

What tags changed?

My files are deleted also everytime with this option turned on, even when the files are still in the list.

I have build 513 and a HTC Touch Diamond (Windows mobile 6.1)
