Media Center 12.0.497
« on: May 13, 2008, 09:31:11 am »

This is the latest version of MC 12.0.  Any MC12.0 license will work with it.  Please post bugs here.  Please start a new thread for anything requiring discussion.  Non-bug posts will be deleted or moved.

This latest build (usually safe) of MC12.0 is here:
ftp://ftp.jriver.com/pub/downloads/MC12/MediaCenter120497.exe

12.0.497 (5/12/2008)

1. Fixed: Doing audio analysis on multiple files at once could cause a deadlock.
2. Changed: The default check for updates frequency is daily instead of bi-weekly. (configurable in Options)
3. Fixed: Playback from the right-click menu would start on the selected file instead of the first file. (only applies to 496)
4. Fixed: Playing images while playing Radio would disengage Radio mode.
5. Changed: 'Delete from handheld any files not in sync list' no longer deletes files other than those found in sub-folders of the base media paths.
6. Changed: The Sort=Random Smartlist modifier has replaced with the Shuffle modifier in the Smartlist editor.
7. Changed: French translation updated (thanks Guillaume & Jean-Guy).
8. Fixed: Assorted Thumbnail database fields now tagged as file specific fields.  (IE stacks will not copy changes to all stack files.)

12.0.496 (5/9/2008)

1. Changed: Theater View list navigation using number keys (1: home; 0: end; 2...9: SMS letters) supports the number pad.
2. Fixed: When calculating a handheld sync, smartlists will always be reevaluated instead of using the last evaluation to ensure they are current.
3. NEW: Theater View SMS-style searching allows searching on any number of characters. (0 to 2 seconds: roll last character; 3 to 5 seconds: add new character; over 5 seconds starts a new search) (press 1 to quickly clear the search)
4. Fixed: Unable to convert CUE file tracks to another format.
5. NEW: Added option to not show scrollbars in Theater View. (Options > Theater View > Advanced)
6. Changed: On Vista with UAC enabled, the screensaver would not be disabled when a detached display was fullscreen.
7. Changed: Added Options > General > Jump on play > Display View (if has display, even in Playing Now) that jumps to display view, even when viewing Playing Now.
8. Changed: File right-click playback options like "Play (shuffled)" are less buried.

12.0.495 (5/8/2008)

1. Optimized: Grouping library fields for panes, tile views, etc. is faster.
2. Optimized: Sorting library field groupings uses multiple threads, improving performance on multi-core systems.
3. Fixed: Default list values weren't working correctly in Smartlists.
4. Changed: Added 8x10, 11x14, and 12x18 printing formats to the print wizard. (large formats only show up for large format printers)

12.0.494 (5/7/2008)

1. Fixed: Theater View weather was not working.
2. Changed: Theater View weather shows external links at the bottom of the forecast list. (required by Weather.com license)
3. Fixed: Videos not getting imported (acquired) from some cameras.
4. Optimized: Picking a pane value no longer updates panes to the left. (only applies when bidirectional filtering is disabled)
5. Optimized: Improved how panes query the database to reduce the number of searches run.
6. Optimized: Panes use less memory.
7. Fixed: Smartlist editor would not work nicely with fields that had more than 100,000 choices.
8. Optimized: Grouping library fields (panes, tile views, etc.) is faster.

12.0.493 (5/6/2008)

1. Fixed: TWAIN scanning was not working properly.
2. Optimized: Panes with many items fill and refresh much faster.
3. Fixed: Edit Image changes were not being applied to pix01 galleries.
4. Fixed: (Hopefully fixed) When switching digital TV channel immediately after starting another channel, MC would sometimes behave strangely.
5. Changed: On the right click menu.  Play and Add to Playing Now will not honor position.  Creating a stack will honor the position.
6. NEW: Added option to ignore (and not ignore) leading articles (a, an & the) in artist names when transferred to an iPod.
7. Fixed: Tab controls could obscure internal controls.
8. Fixed: Thumbnails could be erroneously reset during thumbnail database compacting.
9. Fixed: Using the /SilentImport command when the program was not running could cause a crash.
10. Changed: When drawing multiline text, if all the lines can't be rendered, a ... will be added to the end of the last line.
11. Fixed: Some Action Window text would not truncate properly when the window was too small to display it all.

12.0.492 (5/2/2008)

1. Optimized: Panes fill and refresh faster.

12.0.491 (5/2/2008)

1. NEW: New internal database format used to store filenames, reducing total memory footprint of the database by over 50% in many cases.
2. Fixed: When filling cover art from a URL, the image could be unnecessarily reencoded as a new JPEG. (non-JPEG images are intentionally converted to JPEG)
3. Optimized: Removing files from a large Playing Now or large playlist is much faster.
4. Fixed: Printer configuration button in Print Wizard would not show the printer properties.
5. Optimized: Improved performance of database saving.
6. Fixed: Recommendation engine could stall MC's shutdown process.
7. Changed: DVD player now can handle aspect ratio correctly even if the video is resized by a post-processing filter (e.g. FFDShow).
8. Changed: Changed how analog TV channels are played with Hauppauge WinTV HVR 1600 device. Experimental.
9. Fixed: Rip filenames with dots in them were not working.
10. Fixed: Library Server could crash on starting/stopping, after an unsuccessful startup.
11. Fixed: Crash while clicking around the podcasts fixed.
12. Changed: Some code changes in DVD playback, to head off potential crashes due to bad DirectShow system or filters. Also added more logging.
13. Changed: Improved how OR's and AND'd rules are handled in the Smartlist Editor.

12.0.490 (4/30/2008)

1. Fixed: UNC path browsing in Disk Location view schemes did not work properly in the tree.
2. Fixed: Pasting strings with unsupported characters (tabs, non-printables, etc.) into the search box would do nothing.
3. Fixed: Cleaned up some wording with Rename, Move, & Copy Files tool.
4. Fixed: Possible crash while analyzing audio using the popup dialog.
5. NEW: Audio Analyzer dialog is sizable, remembers last position, and doesn't disable the list during processing.
6. NEW: Audio Analyzer dialog can run multiple analyze processes at once. (defaults to 2)
7. Fixed: Holding shift while drawing a right-click lasso in a list wouldn't do additive selection.
8. Changed: Dropping files to transfer on a handheld while it's gathering the files already on the device will show a wait message (with cancel) instead of doing nothing.
9. Optimized: Generic storage card devices or user-created virtual devices gather files the first time the handheld is used, instead of at startup. (so missing network drives, mapping a huge drive, etc. won't cause performance issues)
10. Optimized: Improved performance of list rendering when viewing handheld transfer progress.
11. Fixed: When adding a file that's already in Playing Now to the end of Playing Now, playback would begin with the first instance of the file.
12. Changed: The default restored size of the main application is 80% of the screen instead of a hard-coded value in the skin. (program starts maximized by default)
13. Changed: Revised how list style (details, thumbnails, etc.) is saved so that if it is changed to the default mode for a view, the list style will automatically adapt to the media types in the list.
14. Changed: Track Info visualizations create the generated HTML file in the temporary folder instead of the Program Files folder (to avoid permissions issues).

3. Fixed: Playback from the right-click menu would start on the selected file instead of the first file. (only applies to 496)

This still happens when play is selected from the recent commands section.

Problem with a podcast

One of my podcast subscriptions cannot be deleted. When I try, it says:

Cannot delete this feed, it is being downloaded.

I don't see anything being downloaded however, and even after restart or reboot this remains.

6. Changed: On Vista with UAC enabled, the screensaver would not be disabled when a detached display was fullscreen.

This one seems to be fixed but I still have the same problem with power savings.
My monitor is still turned off during video playback.

BTW it's not related to UAC as I have switched it off just after the setup was complete  :P

edit: my bad, this one is actually not fixed. the screensaver still appears after the delay.
It seems that the screensaver is a little capricious under Vista and isn't triggered everytime.
To be sure, set the delay to 1min.
Stay idle and check it appears correctly
Now launch a video with detached display.
On my computer the screensaver is displayed after 1min.

iPod sync doesn't work properly for me with 497. MC seems to be wanting to copy a lot of files to the iPod that are already on it. Works with 495, which i have reinstalled now.

I'm locking up MC with a Convert Format running on files on an SD card. Settings are: Ape> Mp3 VBR high, do not update database & delete source files. I haven't been able to test on my other PC with card reader. SD card is not locked.

The how-to reproduce the hung-up:

* Select an album with e.g. 10 files
* Play one file of these
* Change e.g. the genre - 1 file is left open for tagging
* Change the date
* MC hangs

thx

I know I'am getting nasty  ;D - but I'am using these tagging features very often:

Locate inside MC jumps to the folder but doesn't put the folder into view (sometimes, currently I'am unable to reproduce this behaviour on demand ...).

When you've got following folders:
 Best Of
   CD1
   CD2

Renaming "Best Of" to something else, then clicking on CD1 doesn't show any files inside any more - you need to try a few times till the files are visible again.

thx

The "Confirm Library Changes" Dialog is bigger than my screen size (1280x768) - I need to move the dialog to the left in order to reach the Yes/No buttons.

Audio Analysis:

Select a few hundred files, click on audio analysis, select one process, click on start and stop several times. Then select 2 processes and click on start and stop - the CPU load stays at 100 %.

What else have I noticed:
When doing audio analysis with two processes the "Saving tag changes ..." begins to leak behind - after 30 analyzed files it leaks 7 tag changes behind. Then clicking on the stop button leaves the computer on 100 % CPU load and tags are not stored any more.

thx

1. Caused two lockups during end of track; MC unable to move to next .ape file on my Vista Sp1 machine.

2. Sync device over LAN with full admin rights and access to folder results in ERROR for every image file that is being resized and copied.

The problem I reported with the past two versions is still happening in .497. MC sometimes locks up when playing and tagging at the same time.

I'm listening and tagging a bunch of MP3 files -- mostly updating a few existing tags such as Rating and Keywords. Fairly often, this happens:

I update tags of a track that is playing. Then I jump to another track (next in the view, or maybe just randomly elsewhere in the view), MC freezes. The previous track is still playing. The status bar says MC needs to update the playing track and is waiting for it to finish. But I can't stop it, by clicking a new track or clicking the stop button (or anything else) because MC is not responding. After a few more seconds (presumably the current playback buffer length) MC goes into a tight 1 second loop of the playing track. I have to crash-close MC to get it to stop.

This problem happens with nothing else open, and after clean reboot, and on a variety of tracks. The whole time, MC Server is running in the background and often (but not always) streaming to another MC client across the room. Of course when I crash-close MC that kills the server too.

Usually, I can just restart MC and it works.... until the next time this happens, which can be minutes, or a day. But if I'm both listening to tracks and updating their tags, it eventually crashes. I don't know for sure when the problem started, because I was on a trip and skipped over some MC builds, but I think it's been hitting me in the 12.0.49x sequence, but possibly not in earlier versions.

Lockup when playing and tagging on 497.  I updated a tag on a song that was playing and got the standard message to stop playing in order to update tag.  However MC would not respond (it would not stop playing and would not respond to any other commenda).  Task manager said "not responding" also.  I did not wait until the song stopped to see what would happen.

Edit:  I have done more editing while playing since and haven't had this problem, even when the "stop playing to update tag is visible".  So.....?

Hi,
I have G-Force Platinum 3.80 installed -for JRiver & Media Player. It used to work just fine, but in the last couple of builds when I r-click on Display and select G-force nothing happens! I', sure it has been installed OK because it works in Media Player 11. It also works as standalone application. Any help?
Thanks

MC crashed again, playing and tagging. This time I got Tagging Error dialog box (first time for this, usually it just locks up).

I had listened to two versions of a track, updated the tags of one, and then tried to delete the other. I got the Tagging Error while deleting the track I DID NOT TAG. This leads to a suspicion: Is MC doing tag updating even when I'm not? Perhaps MC is updating the number of plays, right when I click delete, and the two actions get into a deadly embrace, or happen in the wrong order (delete, then try to tag...).

I don't care at all about number of plays, ever, so if that's the culprit, is there a way to disable this "feature"?

Lock up again. This time, I'm listening to one track, and went back to retag a track (change the Name field) I haven't touched in a half-hour. Instant lockup of MC -- no cursor/pointer anywhere, no response to clicks or hotkeys. However, the track kept playing until if finished, no looping. However, MC is set to repeat and that didn't happen.

I had already played and tagged two dozen files without problem (since the last crash I reported), so I don't see a pattern of actions.

Again, this same machine is also my MC server, feeding a PC across the room. Server dies when MC client locks up. BUT this time, Server wasn't streaming because I hadn't gone back to the client to restart it after the previous crash.

I can't come up with anything that has changed on my side, on this PC, other than updating MC with every new version. The lock-ups happen maybe 5% of the time (5 random times out of 100 playing+tagging actions), and only while playing and tagging at the same time. This time with the odd behavior that the tagging was to a file that hadn't been played recently.

I hope these details offer some clues...

Syncing with iPod Nano 1st-gen does not work.  It will not 'delete files not in sync-list' anymore. Going back to a prior MC12 version that does work in the meantime.

MC can update the iPod firmware.  Right click on the iPod under Drives and Devices.

Sync Handheld (using a hard-drive as a Handheld) is still giving me problems, it will Sync duplicate files, creating files with (1) at the end (which shows they are the same since naming is based upon the tags)

Ok.  Tried that and no change.  No update (already on 1.3.1).  Still broken, what know?  I deleted everything, resynced and still it will not remove files when syncing (later) if they've been deleted from the playlist(s) to be synced with (in MC).

More MC freezes while playing and tagging (dozens of times since last report, I'm just reporting it when I have possibly useful info). Maybe here's another clue....

When I restart MC, some of the tag changes in the database are lost FOR THE PRIOR SONG. Yet MC had plenty of time to write the tags to the MP3, and no obvious file access contention.

1. Play song A, update some tags.
2. Play song B for 20 seconds or more (so song A is no longer playing), update some tags.
3. MC freezes, says it can't update tags until playing song is stopped, which is impossible because MC is frozen.
4. Force MC to close, restart.
5. ODDITY: After restart, the database does not have all the changes to song A's tags, even though the crash didn't happen until trying to save song B's tags.

Was MC really still working on song A? If so, what could have been "open" therefore preventing a tag update, since song A was no longer playing? Is the database updated before or after the music file's tags are resaved?

You seem to be having the same trouble I am. I'm having freezing happening when I burn a disc. It's been this way since the last couple of updates. I'm thinking of switching to just the jukebox version. Would you happen to know if my registration from Media center will work with jukebox?

Anybody:  Any clue what I can do next?  I tried all versions of MC from 12.0.493 which updated the MC database format and syncing does not work still.  I can go back further if needed, but I figure I'll have to restore a backup to get back to the old (prior version) of the MC database format, correct?

Hi MC Team,

With this build, as well the previous one, scrolling through albums in theater view has slowed to a snail's pace (the cover art takes an extremely long time to pop up). I can't scroll through without it having to create the thumbnails for every new screen of albums. I tried changing the frame rate to everything between 1 and 60, and the problem persisted. I tried unchecking the high quality drawing option as well....also tried changing some options on my video card (ATI Mobility Radeon 9700). I also tried building thumbnails. Nothing worked, so I just now reinstalled 12.0.432. It told me that the default library was incompatable, I used a backup one, and now the problem is gone. I can put my cursor at the bottom or top of the screen in theater view and MC scrolls through my music collection like butter. Don't know if other people are running into this problem, but I thought I mention it since every previous version has worked great. I'm running MC on a laptop with XP Pro with 2gigs of ram and a 3.0Ghz Pentium (certainly nothing to brag about these days...but I thought it might help diagnose the problem). The music in my library is also being pulled from a networked computer.

Thanks.

I'm observing stalls in MC when switching view schemes. Like Ukharfur mentions the delay in Theater View, I'm getting stalls that seem related to thumbnails (already built) switching between Tile modes; I don't have any stalls with Pane tabs. I have a majority of my data on external drives, and I can monitor when they are being accessed by MC (e.g. import or building thumbs), but MC isn't accessing new data....I'm just moving around in MC and get these stalls where I will sometimes observe the playback bar at the top freeze during playback. Ever since the new database, while it has a smaller memory footprint, MC has been acting a bit fussy.

This is the latest version of MC 12.0.  Any MC12.0 license will work with it.  Please post bugs here.

Playing now in theater mode: when the cursor reaches the last element on the screen, the list starts scrolling crazy. The scroll should only happen on mouse/key/remote events.

Erik & Tombert, if I'm understanding you correctly, you can prevent this by going Tools->Options->Theater View->behavior-> uncheck the "Autoscroll-with-mouse" option.

I happen to really like the autoscroll feature though. I use Theater View on my TV and control it with a Gyration Universal Remote Control from my couch in my underwear. So it's nice to be able to scroll through my collection by just tilting my wrist down and positioning the cursor at the bottom of the screen (BTW, the gyration remote is fantastic for controlling your computer and audio/video equipment).

My complaint, again, is that the autoscroll is painfully slow with these more recent builds.
