Uploading to new 160 Gb iPod, error after about 80 songs
« on: May 19, 2008, 03:28:04 pm »

Hi,

Just got a new iPod, initialized it with Media center.  When I try to transfer about 2000 or even 200 songs, it starts out fine and uploads... but after about 80 songs or so, instead of saying complete, I get all error codes....

When I transfer just a hangful like 14, it works fine...

Can someone explain why it gets errors after about 80 transferred? ?

Again, this is a problem, simply after dragging and dropping files to be uploaded into the activity box, it goes down the list and uploads song after song (detailed view), but after about 80 or so songs, it wont transfer, or at least instead of saying complete, it says error and goes to next in list and it says error also... from then on instead of tranfsferring the remaining on the list, it says error...  Nay suggestions?  I updated the firmware of the iPOD, re-initialized/restored it... not sure why I get errors after about 80 or so get transferred just fine....  ?  These are all MP3 files by the way.

Every time...  just stops after about 80-120 songs...

complete
complete
complete
error
error
error
error
error
etc...  the remaining 90% of the songs would be this way also

I just tried on another $7,000.00 computer running hte latest version of media center 12...

It gets to about 10-11% completed and then all of a sudden gets errors transferring....  This doesn't make any sense. ??

Are you running as admin?  We've had some reports that sync didn't work when not admin.

$7,000?  Must be chrome plated and engraved by Tiffany's.

How do I make sure I'm admin when in Vista?  In any case, I don't see why it would fly down the list and work 100% and after about, say 200 songs (it is actually closer to 150-200, I checked), it just stops transferring... it has nothing to do with the song...  it just stops transferring and I get the erro codes popping up.... different computers also...

I'm trying to convince my friend to buy Media center instead of using the free iTunes, and this isn't helping my cause, I hope we can figure this out soon.  The iPod syncs perfectly with her iTunes....   Like I said, on both of our computers, it simply stops transferring after about 10% of the files are successfully transferred...  Instead of transferring, it tries, gives error message instead of completed, goes to the next song, tries to transfer for a little bit, then gives error, and goes down the list of songs not transferring.  Not sure why it would work fine for the first 150-200 songs, then just stop transferring with these error codes.

we are the admin on our individually owned computers.  Same thing happens now on 3 different computers.  One has latest media center 12 and others have failry recent version (within a week or so) ... no difference...

Not that it makes any dfference, but the iPod display says "synchronizing" but when it stops transferring, and the error messages start on the individual songs, it no longer says synchronizing and just says connected.

To stop Media Center from spending countless hours trying to send the remaining 90% of songs, you have to press cancel sync.  When you do, media center crashes.

Did you update the firmware on the iPod?  Maybe you have an older version of iTunes.

Everything has been updated...   mentioned that earlier that I updated the firmware and re-initialized, etc...  Nothing changes this strange situation.  I was able to use iTunes to sync the entire library...  It is going to be hard for me to convince her to buy media center... I can;t figure out why the transfer stops around 10-12% ... doesn;t make sense.

This looks like the same problem I'm having on my 4th Gen 20 gig, posted in thread http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=46545.0;topicseen
Running XP having MC convert .wma to .mp3.  I've initialized several times with mc and keep ending up at the same place.

Is there iTunes stuff running on these machines?

I just bought (on Thursday) a Classic 160, plugged it in, inititialised, and off I went, no dramas at all. If it's not the machine, perhaps its something in common on the machines.

[Edit] I should add, I did over 80GB in one hit, converting all sorts of formats as it went...

Is it happening when it gets to a certain file? Can you send me the log files (rick at jriver dot com)?

With mine there was no Itunes installed on the machine and it happened at random after anywhere from 1-2 hours.
Sorry to say I can't recreate the problem as my Ipod has died....  Waiting for a new 160gb...

You might try a different USB port. I know it sounds silly, but on a previous PC my iPod would show the symptoms you're seeing when I used a front USB port -- but worked fine with those in the rear. I believe it is a power issue.

Maybe worth a shot.

I had the same thing happen a few days ago syncing contacts to a PDA.  It wouldn't work on a USB hub.  It worked when I plugged it into a front USB port.

I'm going to go out on a limb and take a guess on what your's is doing. I had/have the same problem with my Ipod (new 160gb Ipod classic). Does your error say: error delayed write failure? If this is the case through my experiments the problem is with the ipod itself not the player or the computer. My guess is its a hardware problem, and I would recommend returning it if you can. Which I plan on doing when i return from my deployment. Best bet if i'm completely off is to try and get the exact wording of the error message and bark up that tree trying to find a solution. If its the delayed write failure issue i think there are even a few threads in this forum regarding that problem. For me the problem has been progessive to the point i can't load hardly any songs at all before it locks up.

Things i've tried:
short burst uploads: work for a while. Upload a few thousand songs at a time. Complete pain, but can work. Though eventually this stopped working for me too.

I've heard the suggestion about bad usb ports but i've used a different ipod on the same usb port and been successful.
