What's up with all the spacing?
« on: May 24, 2008, 02:25:38 pm »

Today I updated to the latest version of MC (12.0.504). The problem is that MC messes up the width of the panes. I want them to be equal in width, which they were before (I was using 12.0.404). The new version seems to add A LOT of space around names. The longest title in my library is "All The Footprints You've Ever Left and The Fear Expecting Ahead" and it gets over 200 px of space around it:

It looks even worse when removing the menu tree:

So is there any way around this or should I just downgrade?

You can move those by dragging the separator at the top of the column.

You can tell MC to auto-size or not.  In options for Tree and View (I think).

Really? I hoover over it with the mouse, but no can do. I can change the column width for the "lower area" - track nr, duration, etc - but not for the top panes.

I've tweaked around with the settings, but it doesn't make any difference.

I think Jim was describing columns.

Panes are auto-sized to fit the content.  This is not configurable.

Once the view gets wide enough for _all_ panes to be the same width without cropping text, it'll do this.  Before that point, it resizes based on needed width percentages.

I also do not really like how this automatic pane width behaves.
Look at the picture. There is still space to take from the genre and album artist panes, but still my Expression list gets truncated.
Also if there is only one long name in one pane, I rather have that single name truncated than all the other longs ones in another pane.

But it doesn't anymore! If you check my screenshots, the longest title is roughly ~25% of the total available space, and still the panes gets resized.

You're right.  Looks like a bug.

Here is another example of why I think there is a bug in auto resizing the panes. Look at much space is left in the 'album artist' pane, while the expression pane gets truncated.

So, if you select the 'World' genre, perhaps the album artist pane would need a lot more space than (Multiple Artists) does?

Are you proposing that the panes should be constantly resizing depending on what's selected?
I wouldn't like that at all.

That's what I would expect an automatic resizing pane to do. But maybe you are right, yes, that would be annoying.
