So I tried a Portable Installation to an external drive (M:) and I get an error message that a portable installation can only be done if I have a valid license on the system. I do have a license, it is just about 2 days old, I used it to register the desktop-installed version (which now shows "Registered"), and I put copies of the .mjr file both in the directory from which I'm running the MediaCenter12.exe setup file as well as in the installation directory I selected on the destination M: drive and I still get the same error message. The only thing that's installed are some directories, all empty except for a User Settings.ini file.

I'm not sure what's happening.

The machine you're installing from has the license installed, right?

Anyone else having issues with this?

Thanks.

Yes, the machine I'm installing from has the MJ12 license on it that was just purchased 2 days ago and activated successfully before I tried the portable install. The only other things that may be different in my case than the typical are:

- My MC12 license is an upgrade from MJ8 as opposed to a new license;
- I also have MC11 installed (installed after MC12 to solve my library import problem) but that didn't even ask me for a license;
- My drive letter M: is perhaps not a typical choice;
- The machine I'm installing from is running Vista.

I know none of this should matter, but ...

Also, where DOES the portable installation expect to find the license? Unlike the regular installation registration, it gave me no option to browse for the .mjr file, and no clue as to how to solve the problem. And the install file I'm using is exactly the same file from which I successfully installed to the machine I'm installing from.

Do you mean MC12?

I just tested a Portable Install to a memory stick on Vista, running with UAC.  No problems.

The installer looks for an installed license on the machine you're installing from.  The .mjr file is not needed.

Maybe the MJ 8 -> MC 12 thing is a clue.  Anyone else?

So ... what do I do? (And yes, I did mean MC12, not MJ12.)

It should work when you run the standard MC12 installer on a PC that has MC12 locally installed and registered.

When you select "Custom install" the portable installation option should be available and you should be able to define the install location.

MC11.1 and old installed JRiver registrations are not a problem on my XP PC (I have the MJ8, MC10, MC11 and MC12 licenses).

Could you describe exactly what you do and what happens? (step by step)

Any more information on this?

Does the installer create a Portable.dat file on the memory stick at the install path?

Does it create a License.dat file?

Sorry I abandoned this thread earlier, but since I'm back now ...

I never did get the portable install to work in Vista. Basically I ended up installing it on my old XP machine (where portable installs seemed to work fine), and since by definition it was a portable install, I used it on my Vista machine without a problem. It's not a long-term solution since I'm decommissioning my XP machine and won't have that around to repeat the process for upgrades or whatever in the future, but it got the job done for the moment and it didn't seem to be reproducible at your end.

So for now it remains a mystery. I'll reactivate this thread if I need to try it again and continue to have problems.
