MJ8 wants web-issued license--email addr not found
« on: May 07, 2003, 12:50:56 pm »

I purchased the MJ v7 software (I still have the confirmation letter) a little less than two years ago, paying my money and downloading my registration file. The email address I used to register the software is still active. I reinstalled my computer's OS and installed MJ v8.0.393. I started the program and attempted to restore my registration from the v8 backup file I had created earlier and was told by the software that I had to register on the web site. I followed the link provided and entered the EXACT same email address that was listed on the purchase confirmation email. The web site did not recognize the address saying, in effect, "I can't find that address."

I read in another thread here that only those people that bought v8 have an address on file. Folks that bought v7 (like I did) are not in the database. (Which begs the question--why the $%& not?)

So, here we have a problem: I have a piece of software I've paid money for (and which, I must add, I've really enjoyed 'till now...) that I cannot install on my computer because (I would guess) someone is trying to put the screws to crackers and reg-file sharers.

I was assured--several times--my license would work with v8. It doesn't. How are you going to fix this?

Thank you.

Did you try the FAQ?

www.mediajukebox.com/license

or a search for similar problems?

What is the name of the license?

A more patient approach would be appreciated.

Jim,

You're right--sorry for the bad attitude. While I was researching the problem (yes, I read all the FAQ-like stuff I could find), I saw a link to support@jriver.com and sent my first help request there. From the response I received, I could tell the person didn't even bother to read my message, he just sent me a plate full of links to pages I've already read--and I was rather frosted at that.

I should not be taking it out on you, though. Please accept my apology.

Regarding your questions:

1) Yes, I've read the FAQ's (and a bunch of other stuff, in fact).

2) I searched for similar problems, finding one (maybe two) that were similar enough to be useful. (I believe I mentioned that in my original note.)

3) The purchase confirmation email (which I don't want to post here, but will be happy to send you if it will help) begins:

From: bbinfo@jriver.com [mailto:bbinfo@jriver.com]
Sent: Thursday, May 31, 2001 05:01
To: ??????
Subject: Buy Button Receipt

BuyButton Receipt for Vendor JRiver,Inc.
-------------------------------------------------------

Authorization: Accepted
Date & Time: May 31, 2001  04:01AM CDT
Product ID: MediaJukebox7
Amount: $24.98
Method: Credit card
(There's more that I don't want to post here...)

4) The license file (at least the backup) has some plaintext after the encrypted section. My name is mentioned twice, my phone number and address are listed and the strings "2.0" and "VISA" appear, along with what appears to be a 32-digit hexadecimal number.

I'd appreciate any help you can give. If you want any of this material, please let me know (since you're an Admin, I assume you can get to my email address).

Thanks!

Our first response is always to send the list of links.

Included in the links is one that says something like "If you don't find the answer, please ask on Interact."

The license file sounds like it's OK, but what is the name of the file?  Not the contents, but the name?  It ends in .rrg .

If y'all don't mind, let me answer several questions in one post.

____________________
To: KingSparta, regarding "by the way did you try this"

Yes, I that's the way I got it working (thank God I save old distribution files...). I then send a note to support@jriver.com to let them know I was no longer desperate, but still would like an answer. (Little did I know I was talking to a mailbot...)

____________________
To: JimH, regarding the regfile. Sheeeze... I meant to include that.

I tried two versions: the first was created by MJ8's "Backup License" function and is named "MediaJukebox8.RRG".

I also tried registrering the program with an older file called "MediaJukebox7.RRG" (that was created with MJ7).

Remember,  the program didn't seem to be misbehaving. It didn't say the license file was invalid, only that I'd have to get a key from the web site and the $%^& web site wouldn't give me one.

(If that info isn't helpful, please ignore...)

Can I get any more information for either of you?

Thanks!

only users who bought MJ8 And MC9 can get a license from the website.

you need to keep your rrg file handy or upgrade to MC9.

This doesn't help solve the problem.  Can you just provide the facts.  Kick the dog if you need to, but don't bring it here.

From Help in MJ, do copy system info and paste it here.

The software does not require you to get a key from the website. It offers that option (for those who purchased through the website), but does not require it.

Can you be more specific about the steps you are going through and how the software tells you to get the key from the website?

Sorry for the delay--work takes priority, you know.

John: What you told me here was incorrect. When you said "the software does not require you to get a key from the website," I assumed you were speaking authoritatively and accurately and that I had made a mistake, so I ran the -exact- same reinstall on another machine and, lo and behold, when I tried to restore the license from the file I had created from the previous MJ8 installation, the new MJ displayed a dialog box containing the text "In order to restore your license, you must register on-line. Click OK to go to our Restore License web page."

Just to be sure, I went there, entered the email address and got the same results as before. The resulting message was "We could not find that email."

I have screen shots of all the above-mentioned dialogs in JPEG format. If you want 'em, tell me where to send 'em.

Someone requested a System Info paste. Here it is:

I know there was a bug once in the restore and if you look in the history page around 8.0.394 or so fixed it.
