I've been playing Apple Lossless files with MC 12 for many months and have never had problems.

Last week I upgraded to iTunes 8 and then noticed that I could no longer import Apple Lossless files into my MC library. So I removed the library and tried reimporting everything. The process was fast and appeared to work, but the files didn't show up. Then I tried playing files in MC from the disk location, and no dice. I also tried uninstalling and reinstalling MC. I tried opening the files with MC, and the message was something like, "File type not recognized." Finally I tried playing the same files in both Quicktime and iTunes, and everything worked. The problem, however, is that I'm getting dropouts in iTunes that are driving me insane!

Please advise. Am I the only person with this problem?

Oh, I'm using the latest version of MC: 533.

We use Quicktime to play some Apple formats.  It wouldn't be surpising if they made it impossible.  They have been doing a lot of similar things lately.

You might consider an open lossless format like APE or FLAC so that you can't get locked out of your own music.

Do you think this issue will be fixed, or fixable?

We'll take a look.  Hopefully we'll be able to make it work.

It can be tricky since Apple intentionally makes it hard to support their formats and hardware.  Sorry if it makes us seem grumpy.

Matt's correct that it would be better to use APE or FLAC.

I'm into year five of PC audio and at various times have had my collection as APE, FLAC, and now Apple Lossless files. I'm not an Apple loyalist but I do have an iPhone and various iPods. I also have a several Slimdevices products that play nicely with Apple Lossless... So I concluded that Apple Lossless was the best single-codec solution. Have a library mirrored in two formats is a big hassle.

I don't use Vista, but on XP I can decode ALAC through DirectShow (instead of QT). I suppose it should work on Vista too.

More info is here: http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=47737.0

EDIT

If the DC-Bass Source filter cannot be installed correctly on Vista this link might help:
http://forum.dsp-worx.de/viewtopic.php?p=1993

(The linked thread precedes the current version of DC-Bass Source. I don't know if the same problem can still occur and if the problem can affect ALAC or AAC decoding.)
