426 videos not to be found
« on: October 22, 2008, 02:47:03 pm »

I imported a folder with movies in it mostly AVI
MC told me than it imported 426 files --Import was VERY VERY VERY slow

I can see the 426 files in Playlist 'Recently imported' - But they are nowhere in library.
Not in Video , not in Pictures , not in Music

And i can play only the ones who have a thumbnails.[ from 'Recently imported']
The one with MC icon or nothing instead of thumbnails are not playing

They do play in VLC and import ok in MC12

Most likely they are imported as documents because you don't have a suitable DirectShow filter installed. You can find more info here: http://wiki.jrmediacenter.com/index.php/DirectShow_Playback_Guide

MC13 doesn't create a documents category automatically. (I have reported this bug.)

Thank you

I understood that MC 13 had his own video stuff like VLC , and no codec pack was needed.

Not the case , and will still use VLC
Maybe , I'm wrong to do so , but i had a 'codecs installed' period with all kind of problems for years
Since not installing any pack , i know what a working nicely computer is.

Do not know if this part of the wiki is yours , but  i know you do write a lot on it. So big congratulation for this.

The wiki article was written mostly by glynor.

The CCCP filter pack is well-behaving. You should at least try it. VLC may be a good player for single video files, but it doesn't have a database. MC can maintain a video library similarly like an audio library.

I used to send video to VLC  from MC12.
Cause , you right , no data base is quite a problem.

But in MC 12 ,I'm able to import all my videos , unlike in MC 13

Does this happen on the same PC (and OS if you have a multiboot system)?

Did you configure the DirectShow playback settings in MC12 anyhow? Maybe you would need to change some settings in MC13.

I'm curious:
1) What are exactly the types of files that got imported as documents? You said "mostly avi". Can you please elaborate and at the same time maybe you can check what happens if you try to import a truckload of other file types (if you have them handy). Goes to prove if the problem is generic or specific.
2) You said you can't play them. Even after manually changing the media type to "Video"?

This sounds very similar to the problem I'm having... AVI files not recognized

...and now that it's been resolved, I'm virtually certain it's the same problem...

Did you configure the DirectShow playback settings in MC12 anyhow? Maybe you would need to change some settings in MC13.

...and I suspect this is the cause. DirectShow settings are apparently not carried over from MC 12 when MC 13 is installed. I suppose there are good reasons for that. For us mere mortal users, however, it's a bit much to expect that we will recognize the setting need to be redone and remember how they were set in MC 12 in the event we uninstalled that before recognizing the problem. My MC 12 DirectShow settings were a miracle from the distant past which I have no hope of recalling.

Here we go

Mostly AVI means , well most of them AVI
All colors and tastes DX50-DIV3-XVID-MPGV-MPGA etc

Few Quick format and very few Real format-Many plain DVDs as well [ not compressed , just copied from DVD to hard disc

What i did
Completely removed MC 12 and MC13

Installed MC 12 default player to nothing
Made a clean import , not using any saved library

Imported 1101 files taking care they are on internal drive and USB drive

MC 12 imported it in no time [ as fast as MP3]
And played all the 100 + files i tested
Did not play" plain DVD" on drive , but that's normal as no codec installed

MC 12 DirectShow  settings the ones out of the box when installing the player

Aspect Ratio == source
Audio Renderer ==02 default Direct Sound device

List on the right - Filters
All checked except
M4V
MOV
MP4
WAV

This are the default setting , i did not change anything.

Installed the last MC13
DirectShow  settings exactly the same than MC 12 [ as well 'out of the box']

Default player to nothing
It took 4 hours and 42 minutes to import the 1101 files - no crash , nothing , just very slow.

A small part of it named Video , but most of them marked as Data.
 PLAY Named Video++playing
PLAY Named data== opening VLC to play .
Without any send to or any setting
Just sending file to default player for AVI
Playing ok in VLC.

Even spending lot of time cannot found out why some as Data or as Video

Both having the same codec DX50-DIV3 etc

Changed Data to Video and it was ok , all tested files playing.

If i import music , import is fast and fine
Same with Pics
Look like importing Video than  MC13 see as data if very slow.

I'm not good enough to know if there is a bug or not.
But i do know how a brand new user having this kind of problem may react.

Your test results are interesting.

Slow importing is obviously caused by MC13's inability to find a usable DirectShow decoder on your PC. That is also the reason why the files are imported as documents.

I have no idea why that happens on MC13, but not on MC12.

Could you test a few files (of different file types) that were imported normally to MC12, but not to MC13? Play them on MC12 and right-click the display during playback. Copy the DirectShow graph info to clipboard and post here.

You could also post your system info from the help menu.

I'm joining in, with the details posted here. Not the same source files but the same behavior.

By comparing MC12 and MC13 I can say so far that MC12 always imported the files with the correct Media Type, even if sometimes was unable to create thumbnails for them or play them correctly (was using extension as a last resort while importing?). MC13 throws things left and right as documents like there's no tomorrow. Fresh installs, no custom settings.

Something did change.

few testing more

saved all MC12 video as backup library

Imported it in MC12
All 'see' as video - No data anymore
But the one saw as data after a regular import still do not play.

Installed CCCP packtage
Imported a 500+ videos folder

Same a before , import very slow [ more than one hour ]
Look like importing a file MC 13 will play import faster - but still MUCH slower than MC12 does-
Files MC 13 see as data take almost 45/60 seconds each to import
result == 258 videos  171data
Look like data is less than without CCCP.

Must import without CCCP installed to check.

I will update my post in one hour or so

I appreciate your rigorous testing, and encourage you to continue, but have you compared your experience to Daydream's and mine?

In particular, I'm wondering if your successful and unsuccessful scans are mixed together, or if the scan works to a point and then fails for files scanned after. (The "Recently Imported" playlist displayed in details style will show this clearly.) The former suggests failures have something to do with the file, while the latter suggests a problem with the program. In my case, it's clear the scanning works until some event "breaks" it, then all subsequent scans fail. It is, in fact, very difficult to get it working again (in my last test, it seemed to require a reboot). I use CCCP exclusively, the files play fine, and I can find nothing wrong with my DirectShow configuration. I never had such a problem with MC 12; it started immediately with MC 13. Needless to say, I'm convinced the problem is with MC 13.

i test to try to help and to get my movies working in MC13

All my import/scan are done with an empty MC13
I delete library after each scan

As i said
~Same a before , import very slow [ more than one hour ]
Look like importing a file MC 13 will play import faster - but still MUCH slower than MC12 does-
Files MC 13 see as data take almost 45/60 seconds each to import~
Scan does work up to the last file imported , but it takes hours ===4 hours and 42 minutes to import the 1101 files

To summarize
-same settings in MC 12 and MC13
-All files working in MC12
-No codecs installed
No DVD player or codec installed
A one month new OS install

And this very weird thing : with VLC as default player , the 'data files' in MC13 show the VLC icon thumbnails-Clicking on Play opens VLC to play the file .Direct , not through Send To ..external program. Anyway no external program are set in MC13.

I can try to remove VLC to see what happens .

Both
From the start i tested importing from internal and external drives - All of them on the same computer.
I cannot see a link  Internal/External  number of files see as Data.
There is video playing and 'data' from both kind of drives.

Anyway , there is some good in any bad.
I did not know i was able to play all my videos in MC 12 without installing codec

I assume than it will be the same with MC 13 , once this problem solved.
