a hint concerning futur of Emusic?
« on: July 22, 2002, 06:58:32 am »

First ,you may not had noticed it,but "US only' downloads is not new on Emusic

The first time i saw it was when they got the label Matador few months ago

Matador is an US indee label who realise europeen indee labels for the US-not only ,but part of his catalog come from non US labels, bands

Some downloads being for US only.
Today,i had a look again and the "US only" downloads are now for all in or out US.And i downloaded them

So maybe it will be the same with the new stuff? Who knows?

Zevele

Well lets hope so. Emusic was my first experiment with digital music (other than ripping my CD collection) and I have enjoyed it and found a lot of good stuff out there - but my 3 month trial ends on 1 October and Im not sure its going to be worth carrying on if I am paying the same as US-based subscribers for a restricted selection.

One year and a half With Emusic on my side
To be fair the no "US only" catalogue is still a good deal at $10 a month.Beside this they started again to put some indee stuff, there is new indee albums since few days.
I know they have a large part of they customers outside USA.Beside it ,if you want to stop to pay,no matter the deal you have,if you are outside USA,nothing they can do.
Keep in mind that they are bound by the major label rules. The situation is not a Emusic one
Well, you can say more or less, cause they are now part of the same group.

I asked them to give all the mp3.com albums to download to 'no US' people.Because i would like it very much..but i must be the only one....

In your case ,you are right,i do not see the point to go beyond your 3 months if the situation the same.

Anyway,i get the 'US only' albums on p2p.....

The thing i really do not like is the fact that they still use the junky Xing encoder

Zevele - yes its still a good deal, but there is something not right about trying to restrict access to national boundaries on the internet - and believe me I dont resent those in the US who can access the full service. But I certainly didnt sign up for this - the change came a few days after I joined, and had I known I might have reconsidered.

Before and after emusic I had no interest in p2p/Napster/all that stuff - Ive got a nice record collection and I am happy with that. Emusic gave me a way to legitimately try out other music at a reasonable compression quality at a reasonable price. It must be the way forward - I took a look at pressplay the other day and with all the restrictions it would be easier to take a chance and buy the CD. I honestly believe I will buy more music on CD because of emusic, although I will download a lot more and discard it after listening. I can try out so many musical styles - jazz, etc - which I simply would not risk in a record store. And I guess this is the point in the long run. I know you can find all the music you want on the internet and I am not going to preach to those who do, but Ive never been interested in that stuff (so far :). Look on amazon etc and all you see is glowing reviews from those who love a particular band - who bothers to take the time to write a bad review? And anyway why does that mean I will like it? Emusic gives me the chance to truly explore new types of music and hopefully broaden my musical horizons.

I certainly hope that the US only experiment is successful and prompts the major labels to expand access to the rest of the world.

Remember,
If you want to sign up for emusic, consider doing it through us. The more MJ users sign up for the trial, the more likely they are to consider greater integration with the jukebox. Our goal is to be their default player. Here's the link:

I started p2p i would say after Napster who was a really junk
To check my want list, from this i bought a lot of records-country mainly.
10 minutes after having a look at Emusic ,i took the free trial -one month or 100 downloads at the time-knowing  that i will stay.
As you say,so much music to try.For me so much names i know but never or little listened to it
On the top of it many many albums i have on vinyl.

I started p2p to find music i have on vinyl.Until now i still buy vinyl. Also to try names i got from friends and from people here on this forum.I used the server from Meda Jukebox to listen to music from others. No luck after less than a week,no more download, after a while no more stream...

I find this american stupidity so .......X 10000,that i use p2p just because i know it worry them.I mean i'am online 24\24 non stop, few days  without a break, running 2 or 3 programs at the same time
I do not download that much, right now trying to get the Sonic Youth at 192 kps.I have all the Sonic Youth but all on vinyl.Just one i have on cd-and vinyl as well
I do downloaded a lot from Audiogalaxy when i understood that they will close.A lot means 14 ooo songs.....

Because i do not buy anymore any record from big labels,i'am just organizing, tagging, controling quality of all this songs. It is a lot of work.
I would pay to get them  from a site like Emusic. But none, and to late ,i will now always use p2p and buy pirate records for any music from a big label
I spent HUDGE money on records during all my life. When i say HUDGE ,i really mean it.Now the money i spend is on -like always- indee labels, second hand.If i really 'need' a record from a big label,i will NEVER buy the american edition.
From now i just want rip them ,in any way.
In september i will put around  400 GB to share, maybe more...

Beside this ,i like Emusic.

peterS:

You might want to drop that into a separate thread. It's apt to get buried here.

Also, can you link EMusic more prominently through the JRiver website, maybe by moving it from Weblinks (which is not where newbies are going to go anyway) to your first MJ page? Seems to me that you'd want new users who are coming in through the home page to see the Emusic link aand possibly piggyback both an MJ purchase and an EMusic subscription at the same time.

Could also stick it on Start for MJ, so established users who come in that way will see it as well.

I did not know this. How long has it been around? I signed up about 3 weeks ago but I went straight to the website from my browser. Is there any way to back up and credit MJ? I wouldn't have ever even considered it without this forum.

And how about being the default Download Manager? It works absolutely wonderfully on EMusic.

I saw today that the same Matadors records than before are 'US only'

Anyway,i was here at the right time ,and i downloaded them.

You can say that you want ,but easyier and cleaner than a p2p.
If i want it in 192 kps? In this case............

I dropped eMusic, not often I get to do something on principal that leaves my nose and face intact.

They really don't get it. witness their response to my eMail canceling my subscription.

Dear Music Enthusiast,

Thank you for contacting the Customer Support Team at
EMusic.com.

We sincerely apologize for the delay in our response!  We are
currently experiencing very high email volumes.

EMusic shares in your frustration with the inability
to access all of the content offered on our site.  If
we had our way, every track on our site would be
available worldwide. Unfortunately, if we were to make
that choice, we would not have access to important
content such as the recent UMG titles as well as
selected titles from our other label partners. As you
are probably aware, many labels sign geographic based
distribution deals. So, for example, a US label signs
an exclusive distribution deal with a label in the UK
to distribute their titles and vice versa. There is
nothing we can do about this and there's really not
much the labels can do in the short term.  Long term,
we think that labels will consider the digital
implications of these deals, but that may take a
substantial amount of time.

All that said, this really does not help you as a
customer or any of our other customers outside the
US.  We have considered the possibility of making
EMusic a US-only service -- which is something we
would really prefer not to do.  We have also discussed
creating separate services by region so that customer
in Denmark, for example, would go to a Web site
specific to Denmark and only see content available in
that region.

In the short term, we are working on ways to better
inform customers outside the US that these restrictions
exist and provide an overview of what content is blocked.
That way, customers can make an informed decision prior
to entering a paid subscription.

Again, thank you for your feedback. We are sorry that
we don't have a quick solution to the problem at this
time, but we are always striving to meet and go beyond
the needs of music fans such as you.

Kind Regards,
Susanne
EMusic Support Team

I've been patiently waiting for two months now for the rumored new content
to appear on eMusic, now its here and I can't get access to it.  Yet I pay
the same subscription fee as US customers.  Enough is enough.

I think eMusic was ill advised to enter into any agreement that denies
service to its customers based on what part of the world they live in, a
global enterprise should serve its customers globally, period.

If eMusic is going to provide a multi-tiered service its subscription fees
should reflect this.

cancel at any time.

At EMusic, we're striving to offer the Internet's best
subscription service.  We're constantly adding new releases,
labels and artists. Once you stop your subscription, you

Thank you for using EMusic.com.

The obvious solution to this situation does not appear to cross their minds.  Prorate the subscription rates on the basis of total percentage available.  i.e. US pays 100%, Cdn maybe 90%.  If done this I'd have hung in there.

Cheers

So how do they determine location...

Do they go by credit card address (mine is not in the country where i live) or by IP (simply proxy server it via many sources of redirectors...

Also is there any source of legally obtainable APE compressed audio ?? Broadband is with many of us and it would be nice to see legal ways of buying APE'ed albums rather than the hubs and other nefarious methods.... MP3 is fine to check a band out but I am still compelled to the CD's for most recordings as I like the full bitrates I can get...

They do not use IP adress.
Look like they do not use the credit card adress
But the adress you give when registering

Concerning the Ip adress, this i am sure of it-a US costumer using my loging was not able to download US music' only.
